General Discussion / Weather radio with live voices only
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:28:16 PM »
I don't know why or what happened, but the Daytona Beach weather radio station is being run only with live voice recordings of all the bulletins and announcements.  No computer voices whatsoever.

And the meteorologists reading the bulletins (and there are a couple of them) sound completely disinterested.

IntelliStar 2 Discussion / Sigh... frustrating
« on: May 04, 2012, 09:26:08 AM »
About a week ago the Intellistar 2 stopped working in my area.  I contacted TWC through their website, and they said they'll get in touch with the cable company to see what the matter is.  Nothing happened.

I contacted the cable company myself, and they said there was an "issue" with it, but in three separate emails they insisted it was working and that I should be seeing its output.  Nothing doing - only the national LDL and local forecast segments.

The cable company just sent me an email saying there's nothing more they can do about it and that if I want to pursue the matter I have to get in touch with The Weather Channel.

I was so happy when the HD feed got added to my cable company, and downright ecstatic that it had the IS 2, and it's killing me to have to go back to the SD feed to watch the local forecasts.   :cry3:

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Daytona Beach, FL IS2 outage
« on: April 28, 2012, 10:31:40 PM »
Sometime today the Daytona Beach, FL Intellistar 2 became unavailable, and we now receive only the satellite LDL and local forecast segments on the HD feed.

The Star ID is 33004.

Thank you for your help!

IntelliStar 2 Discussion / First advisory scroll
« on: February 10, 2012, 02:56:28 PM »
I just saw my first advisory scroll on the IS2, a fire weather watch.

The text is much smaller than on any SD Star, but, since it's high definition, it's still easily readable.

The one thing I don't like is that it doesn't replace the LDL, but simply sits on top of it and cuts off the bottom section.  (I can see clouds in the extended forecast but I don't know if there's any precipitation falling from them.)  As much as I liked the larger LDL from 2 years ago, my one major complaint with it was that advisory scrolls cut off the bottom of those, too.

General Discussion / How many weather radios do you own?
« on: February 05, 2012, 11:09:18 PM »
How many weather radios do you own?  I own three: Midland WR-120, Midland WR-100, and an old Midland 74-109.

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Daytona Beach IS2 metro maps
« on: January 30, 2012, 09:40:28 PM »
I'd like to make a request about the metro maps on the Intellistar 2 in Daytona Beach (#033004).

The metro maps (for current conditions and forecasts) have the east coast of Florida in the middle of the screen, meaning that the whole right half of the screen is just blue ocean.  If the map was moved a little further to the west, we'd be able to see more of central Florida, add more cities to the map, and not have so much wasted space.  While this might include more territory that isn't necessarily covered by this Star, I think it would make sense to have more land, and, therefore, more information, present on the screen, instead of having so much ocean there.

Thank you.

TWC and your Cable Company / HD in Daytona Beach!!
« on: January 28, 2012, 10:16:07 PM »
My disappointment was truly premature!  Sometime when I was at work today Bright House added the HD feed to the lineup!  And... guess what... we have the IS2, something I didn't get for two years in Massachusetts!!!!

It looks GREAT!  And, yes, I actually did do a little happy dance!

General Discussion / Nationwide EAS test
« on: November 09, 2011, 02:04:11 PM »
Nationwide EAS test: FAIL!

I monitored three sources: a local broadcast network on cable, a basic cable network, and a local radio station.

The local broadcast network activated the test, but the audio quality was terrible to the point of incomprehensibility. The basic cable network did NOTHING. And the local radio station sounded the warning tone, followed by absolute silence until the end-of-alert tone.

Had this have been a real emergency, the it seems like many people wouldn't have heard it.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Weather conditions
« on: September 03, 2011, 12:25:02 AM »
I know that the weather conditions disappeared due to an error during the latest upgrade, but are there any plans to bring them back?  It was very interesting to see what the weather is where our members are posting from.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Sorry if I don't answer you...
« on: September 02, 2011, 01:55:52 PM »
A lot of people have been writing to me today, and I apologize for not being able to respond to each message.  For whatever reason, I'm having a miserable time trying to post messages.  It takes an average of 3-4 page reloads and a lot of waiting for me to be able to get a message posted to the board.  I'm having a lot of time-out errors, so this is why I haven't been able to write more than a very small number of responses.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Sloooooooooooooow tonight
« on: September 02, 2011, 02:54:11 AM »
Is it just me, or is the forum really running as slow as molasses tonight?  It takes every page a much longer time to load than usual, and posting is next to impossible.  It took me three attempts (thank goodness I was able to copy and paste) just a single reply to a message a few minutes ago.

General Discussion / Not a weather poem, but my favorite
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:31:20 AM »
The café

She walked into a smoky café
That happened to be along her way
Upon the stage a band was playing
The band leader was slightly graying

She ordered a coffee, black and hot
It was too bitter; she liked it not
She paid the waiter and took a seat
The band had trouble keeping a beat

Her neighbor asked if she had a light
The flame pierced the darkness of the night
In the corner sat a lone young man
He wore a hat and had a deep tan

He sat there, staring deep into space,
As if he was in another place
She felt sorry for him, all alone,
And guessed his feelings were like her own

The band played a different song, still jazz
She looked down at the ring that she has
From an old flame, now long-forgotten
Bitter aftertaste, truly rotten

She noticed the young man’s eyes were green,
The brightest color she’d ever seen
She tried hard to read his expression,
And she saw he was full of tension

She was mesmerized, captivated
And did what she had contemplated
She got up, walked over to the man
If anyone can help, then she can

She asked gently if she could sit down
The man said “yes,” although with a frown
Silent once more, he stared at his hand,
While their neighbors applauded the band

She asked, “Have you ever been in love?”
By this time, the man had had enough
He asked, “So, you don’t remember me?”
He moved closer, sitting knee-to-knee

She felt uneasy and quite afraid
He spoke again, though his nerves were frayed
“That’s the ring I gave you as a gift…
A rotten waste of money,” he quipped

It was him – she just couldn’t believe
She just wanted to get up and leave
He said, “Sit down, please, let’s have a talk,
Or, if you’d prefer, we’ll take a walk”

He asked why she left ten years ago
She couldn’t believe he didn’t know
“I was pregnant and, well, scared,” she cried,
“But after two days, the baby died”

She sobbed, “I blamed you for everything,”
And then, slowly, she took off her ring
“I loved you, Johnny, without a doubt,
But all I wanted was to get out”

“I loved you, too; I’d have loved the kid,”
He held up a hand, his tears he hid
“But why,” he asked, “couldn’t you tell me?”
“That’s simply the way it had to be”

She slowly stood up and walked away
There was nothing else for her to say
She left the ring and walked out the door
He tossed it with disgust on the floor

The band now played a happier song
He still didn’t know what he did wrong
Softly, he ordered another beer,
Dreaming, as always, that she’d stayed near

Clouds

What shapes do I see in the clouds,
Forming amongst these airborne shrouds?
Covering the sky, floating past
Each one more unique than the last

Nature's rich imagination:
An expression of elation
Creativity unsurpassed
The sky: a canvas deep and vast

As if molding a lump of clay,
Nature takes some time out to play
The wind sets the clouds into place
As thick as stone, as light as lace
