But The Weather Network is infinitely better, in my opinion. Where do you live in Canada? I've visited Québec, New Brunswick, and a lovely two weeks on Prince Edward Island.

« on: September 11, 2015, 11:25:17 PM »I can't remember HOW many times in the past year alone, I get ready for a run and need to check a radar to see if it is going to rain while I run. I wait for 15-20 minutes on TWC and NOTHING comes up. I have to go upstairs to a computer to the NWS website or even The WeatherSTAR simulator to get a radar.
That's the kind of behavior TWC was banking on to justify so much longform - people would go to computers, tablets, phones, etc. for actual weather, while people would turn on the TV for everything but.

I had quite a lot of the three letter codes memorized back in the day. I've forgotten 99% of them by now.

He was truly a pioneer, and you're right - his reporting on tornadoes, despite the FCC ban, undoubtedly saved lives and paved the way for the kind of warning system we have today.

A lot of people here seem to think that The Weather Channel is going to go back to its pre-NBC days just like that if it does get sold, and I can't fathom that happening. Not even by a long shot.

Imagine a scenario in which the digital platforms sell but the channel gets split off instead... or ceases to exist altogether. (Or transforms into an entirely generic basic cable channel with no weather coverage to speak of.)

Both, actually. El Niño makes conditions unfavorable for tropical development in the Atlantic, hence the lower numbers of storms, and those same unfavorable conditions also make it harder for storms that do develop to strengthen as fully as they might otherwise have been able to do. There are exceptions, of course, but, in general, El Niño results in fewer and overall weaker storms in the Atlantic.

I'm not sure if it's been announced yet when Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7. But that time will certainly come. The free upgrade to Windows 10 is only available for a year, and I'd personally much rather upgrade to something that's going to be supported for a while (actually, since Microsoft now plans on continuous upgrades instead of entire new releases, it's going to be for a long while) than stick with something that's going to become obsolete sooner rather than later.
There are still a LOT of people who use Windows XP. Yes, it was a great operating system, but its time has come. Its moment in the sun is over. It is no longer supported. But people still use it, though entirely at their own risk at this point. I wonder how many people are aware about that last part.

Fortunately, it usually doesn't take terribly long.
It's four hours later, so it must certainly be done by now. How do you like it?
