I have a good feeling this will be a GOM or SE Hitter if it gets organized enough, it's further south than Earl and Fiona were when they left from the Cape Verdes.

Say hello to Tropical Storm Gaston. :thrilled: This storm looks like it's going to go much further south, but it's still a ways out there to determine any effect on the US.

Gaston is expected to gradually intensify over the next few days as it heads slowly westward.  We have a lot of time to watch this one develop.  This storm makes it four tropical storms now in the last 11 days.  I'm telling you there's a proverbial light switch for the tropics that Mother Nature turned on a couple weeks ago. :P

Update:  Well, this forecast went wrong.  Instead of gradually intensifying, Gaston has lost its center of circulation and most of its convection.  It has degenerated into a remnant low.  No more advisories will be issued on this storm.  The remnants may have a chance to regenerate into Gaston again, but it'll need to regain a lot to be considered a tropical cyclone again.

Kinda just fizzled out, didn't it?  This was surprising.  It wasn't predicted to become as strong as Danielle or Earl, but such an early death was quite unexpected.

Dry air choked it off, but it's expected to make a slow comeback over the next few days once it gets away from that into light shear.

ALTHOUGH NOT EXPLICITLY INDICATED HERE...THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT
GASTON COULD REGENERATE INTO A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE FORECAST
PERIOD.  THIS IS THE SCENARIO THAT IS BEING SUGGESTED BY SOME OF THE
GLOBAL MODELS.

How is Gaston pronounced? I've always heard it pronounced "gas-ten," but Heather pronounced it something like "Gas-tooun" earlier today...

Gaston is a French name.  gas-TON, but with the "N" half cut-off.  In other words, think of the Grey Poupon commercials and how they pronounced it.  Gaston and Poupon rhyme. :)

I think it will regenerate sometime early next week if not sooner.
