I'm not sure that I can share...

Why would you want to let us know that you have information the rest of us aren't allowed to know?  Why not just keep silent?  It really is a mean thing to do to say "I know a secret but I'm not going to tell you," especially when the information that you're not allowed to share would be of great interest to the rest of us.

Really, it's just like taunting us, and it's not very nice.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: WOW! Cable is Going Digital
« on: August 14, 2011, 02:01:44 PM »
The one's that have a built in digital tuner in TV's and DVD recorder's don't have to worry about it.

Not all cable companies make their digital channels accessible without a converter box, however, no matter what capabilities your TV has.  For example, Comcast (at least in Massachusetts where I lived) requires a converter box for ALL channels other than analogue (SD) versions of broadcast channels.  That's all you'll get if you just plug the coax from the wall into your TV, no matter what kind of TV it is.

Honestly, why not just turn the "quick reply" off if it's bothering you all and it cannot be easily fixed?

I have the wide box problem not with quick reply, but on the regular reply screen, such as the one I'm using now.

But what does your post mean?  The problem probably won't be fixed anytime soon, so those with a problem should either live with it or turn the feature off?

What I'm trying to say is I think it was borderline to be more than a TD that's all. There's no reason to take what I said so personally, I wasn't trying to offend you or anyone else that was offended by my statement. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what I think or you think it's the NHC's call.

39 mph (33 knots) is what it takes for a system to be classified as a tropical storm, and, therefore, receive a name.

Do you think the NHC is fudging wind speeds upwards a little for the sake of giving a storm a name?

Do you think the criteria for a tropical storm should be changed to 45 or even 50 mph?

What is the problem you have with small storms of 40 mph in the middle of the ocean receiving a name?  Really, what is the problem?

Why do names need to be rationed?!

It is beginning to feel like the NHC is just naming storms just to validate their forecast, but I'm not going to get into a debate over this matter. Ironically, Franklin from 2005 took a similar path OTS, but it formed much further south near the Bahamas.

I still don't get this!  A tropical storm is a tropical storm, period.  It meets certain characteristics and guidelines.  One of the rules is that it gets a name.  The NHC isn't creating tropical cyclones out of whole cloth, and I see no evidence that it's chomping at the bit to use as many names as possible.

I'm in favor of merging.  I see no reason why non-irrelevant information should be removed simply because it duplicates another topic.

There are advantages and disadvantages to everything.  Digital cable will give you clearer channels and lots more of them (potentially), but the disadvantage is that you need a converter box.  However, if I'm correct, cable companies are obliged to provide a minimum (2 or 3) of converter boxes for free for a period of time so that subscribers who previously didn't have a box don't lose access to channels.

So if you have HD in your area and still see the same old graphics you've been seeing for like ... forever now. Call your cable/satellite provider and ask them to upgrade and buy the new box. Only then will you see the new intellistar2 HD graphics. We can only build the product ... doesn't mean everyone purchases it, unfortunately.

And then you have to hope that you don't have Comcast, because their equipment apparently isn't compatible with the IS2.  :(

I had Comcast when I lived in Massachusetts.  I had the HD feed, but no Star.  Now I live in Florida, and there's not even an HD feed!

Interesting tidbit, 7 out of the 10 costliest hurricanes listed in the chart occurred in the 2004/2005 season alone, the most active seasons of the 21st century.
Two years qualify as a season?

When I said it the second time I said "seasons" so obviously the first one was supposed to be the same. I didn't even realize I left off the s until you brought it to my attention.

I actually didn't recognize it as a typo - I just thought you were combining two years together for some reason.

Lesson learned: beware of rain falling so hard it's like a leaky faucet, and you'd sure as heck be careful of that intense sunshine there!

So, is the transparent TWC logo and LDL-only LOT8s effective on ALL long-form shows now? I remember that in the past, this was only being tested on selected shows, such as Peter Lik.

I have no idea whether TWC has made a final decision on this, but it seems to be the direction they're going in.

Haven't seen the L-bar in over a week so maybe it has been discontinued    :dunno:

It looks like TWC is changing the way it presents weather information during longform programming.  As it stands now, longform has no weather information, except on the 8s, when the LDL is used.

He said that if universal healthcare became law, within 2 years or so, our AAA credit rating will be downgraded.

Practically every other industrialized country has universal healthcare, so how can you explain their high credit ratings if it would destroy that of the U.S., which is one of the very few modern countries without it?
