The red box disappeared about a day and a half ago when it became clear that the Daytona Beach area won't have too much of an impact from Irene.

Can we stay on the topic of tropics please ;)

I wish I could respond to you in alliteration, but an "okay" will have to suffice!

I wonder if TWC will activate the Satellite product for IntelliStars along the east coast in anticipation of Irene?

I already see it on a regular basis when the close-up radar isn't needed.
The actual Satellite product or the Radar/Satellite? The Satellite product is only typically seen on the west coast, and in some circumstances in the past on the east coast when a large blizzard or hurricane was approaching.

Sorry - the radar/satellite.  With a landfalling (or approaching) hurricane, I think the radar/satellite would be more valuable than just the satellite.

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion

TWC has always been good about their coverage on hurricanes. We never seem to have to question that.

I still miss John Hope.  He was the expert, period.

It's mainly the severe storms/tornadoes in the country that we sometimes have to wonder about, although I admit TWC is getting better with it.

They were better back in the day.  Sadly, the network lost its way since.

Fun fact.... each dropsondes cost around 700-800 bucks. Still well worth it though!

Just imagine if Republicans get their way and slash NOAA's budget.

Only accidentally-dyed underwear.

Hmm, interesting info. I always assumed custom backgrounds were used on both cable/satellite feeds.

It was one feed broadcast by TWC.  Those with a Star saw their local forecast superimposed over the background.  Those without a Star just saw the same background.

I don't like the wording of that earthquake statement.  It doesn't sound quite right, especially the word "hit."

I've never felt an earthquake that I was consciously aware of.  I hope it stays that way.

I already have experience from Massachusetts (yes!) in living through minor hurricanes, and Irene's forecast seems to indicate that we'll experience some moderate tropical storm conditions late this week.

The video backgrounds (some static, some animated) were shown on TWC's feed, just as the satellite forecast is now.  The WeatherStar III simply showed text over a transparent background (to show TWC's feed) instead of generating its own blue or grey backgrounds.

These backgrounds were used in the mid-1980s, but were eventually discontinued for two reasons: it was sometimes hard to read the Star's text over some of the backgrounds (a couple of them were pretty funky and competed with the words), and TWC was ready to introduce its first satellite forecast (instead of a black screen or these video backgrounds): a non-stop loop of the text-based "Travel Cities Forecast".

So that contract I signed in blood wasn't for THIS forum?  Well... good to know, anyway.  :)

No, I very seriously doubt I'll have to evacuate.  I'm actually quite a distance from the coast, so I certainly hope flooding isn't going to be an issue.  How long the electricity will stay on - that's a question.  But I already have plenty of batteries, flashlights, radios, tinned food, and so on, so I'll be fine.

I wasn't a member of this forum during the last landfalling U.S. hurricane, so I have a question...

Is it expected (or requested, or just asked for) that those in the path of a hurricane or other tropical system post reports about what's going on?  I think it would make for some interesting reading.  I'm not working Thursday, Friday, and the first half of Saturday, so I'll be able to write about the storm so long as the power holds out.

Who else is in the expected path of the storm?  Where are you?  I'm in Daytona Beach, Florida, and tropical storm conditions are expected here from Thursday night through Saturday morning.  Right now, they're predicting we'll probably escape most hurricane-force winds, since the track keeps shifting to the east.
