General Weather Chat / Re: What's the weather in your area?
« on: October 09, 2011, 08:27:22 PM »
The weather in Daytona Beach is still nightmarish.  Really, only a hurricane would be worse.

I've never seen rain come down so heavily before.  The winds are gusting to tropical storm force.  There's urban flooding all over the place, and from what I saw on TV, the beach is an absolute mess.  Various tree parts and bits of building façades are everywhere.

We had no power for about two hours this evening.  When I called the automated outage reporting line, they said the power would likely be restored sometime tomorrow morning.  I'm very happy that they got the transformer fixed/replaced so soon!

I bought my Kindle 2 with 3G connection at the beginning of last year, and I absolutely love it!    Not only does it give me access to so much reading material - much more than I ever could have had without it - but it's also my internet connection when I travel and it keeps me entertained with all those word and logic games available for it, too.  :)

Fine, thanks!  You?

Are you the owner of all those videos on YouTube I enjoy watching?  :)

Winter Weather / Re: Winter Storm Thread: 2011-12 Season
« on: October 05, 2011, 01:46:04 PM »
Oh, geez... New England suffered enough last winter!  Between the middle of December and February 8th (I believe), eastern Massachusetts had steady snow (more than just flurries or a passing snow shower) once every two or three days without exception.

Believe it or not, the total snowfall accumulations weren't even close to the all-time records.  There were a couple of big storms, but the majority of the snow came with just a few inches here and a few inches there - enough to create aggravation by requiring the plows to run practically every day for two months and adding to the snowbanks - but not enough to break records.

Welcome to my life during my freshman year of college... only the nightly fire alarms were on an almost nightly basis all throughout the year.  :(

My big redecorating project.  Almost three months here and I'm still finding new things to do to give me a backache.  :)

Everything on the top shelf on the right shelves got moved to the bottom to make way for the stereo, which had previously been clear across the room... and behind me.  Well, I had enough of that, so I moved it closer... and in front of me, which is more logical, I think.  So much unplugging and replugging, unwiring and rewiring...  But it's done.  :)

At 1:00 am EDT, the new transparent logo remained on when "Weather Center Live" began for about half a minute.

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Ophelia
« on: September 30, 2011, 06:54:46 PM »
Looks like NHC completely underestimated Ophelia's wind speeds. She's now a major hurricane.

Considering Ophelia was truly struggling for life not too long ago, this just goes to show that pretty much anything is possible, and we're still in the learning stages for predicting tropical systems.

Congratulations!  That's what I did every day for seven years... without makeup.  Boy, those studio lights do make a person look tired.  And old.  And cranky.  Or maybe it's just a natural reaction from sitting under such hot lights.  :)

Do you get a map?  Graphics of any kind?  I had a map, graphics, a clicker... the whole nine yards.  Granted, it was difficult before they got me a clip-on mic... having to hold the microphone in one hand and the clicker in the other, I had to resort to writing my notes on a cue card just so I could keep track of everything.  :)

Weatherscan Discussion / Re: Alert scrolls
« on: September 30, 2011, 11:21:22 AM »
It sounds, then, like your Weatherscan is programmed to ignore the less urgent bulletins.  I'd recommend asking one of the moderators if this is something worth posting in the technical support folder for the Star staff to look at.

Weatherscan should scroll the same weather bulletins that TWC does on its Stars.  If Weatherscan doesn't, all I can think of is that it's an error in that Weatherscan somehow "missed" it, or the Weatherscan system is set up with slightly different geographic parameters from TWC's Star - just enough to exclude that particular advisory from Weatherscan.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Re: Weather conditions

Hmm every so often a new image is generated with updated conditions. It typically happens once an hour so.

You mean... the graphic actually updates based on what the weather is at the current time?  I had no idea that's what it was for!
