Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Gonzalo
« on: October 14, 2014, 12:27:11 PM »
This is my fourth summer living in Florida, and, other than a couple of hardly-worth-mentioning brushes on the far edges of storms, my corner of the state has been hurricane-free this entire time.  Meanwhile, Massachusetts, where I moved from, has had a series of direct hits, which hadn't happened previously since 1991.

I suppose the state of Florida should be thanking me...

General Discussion / Re: WN is WORSE than TWC!
« on: October 14, 2014, 12:25:26 PM »
At least in Milwaukee it is.  We only got 3 hours of WN yesterday. The rest was all paid programming.  They were doing paid programming from 9 to 5 but took over the early morning yesterday and doing the same thing today! Is this a WN problem,  or a station problem? WN is not connected with a local news station in Milwaukee.  Maybe they should? It seems WIWN is the black sheep in the family.  It's not helping my trust toward WN. This was supposed to replace TWC????  Is WN 100% problem free on DTV? I wonder every time we have a problem in Milwaukee.

The station that airs WN's programming has, for whatever reason, chosen to air only 3 hours of WN and 21 hours of paid programming.  Infomercials are pure profit for stations, so if it's a choice between weather programming from a never-heard-of station or infomercials, they're probably going to go with the infomercials.

Look at the network Ion, for example.  Last time I checked (which admittedly wasn't particularly recently), most of their affiliates aired only the nationally-scheduled programming provided by the network, and the whole rest of the broadcast day was nothing but infomercials.

TWC went to long form at 2pm ET.
The only extra live coverage today is on the alternate SD feed for areas effected by storms.
Why can't TWC do the alternate feed on the HD channel for those who have the IS2?

That's a shame.  The SD hasn't been on my cable lineup in, what, a year?  They rebroadcast the HD feed in SD resolution, letterboxed in a 4:3 frame, but it's still the HD feed with the IntelliStar 2.  I know other members here have said the same thing is happening where they live.

Besides, who wants to watch the SD channel when HD is available?

Any more news on the relaunch?

Not that I can say publicly, but stay tuned.  Relaunch is a strong word.

In that case, just how noticeable will these changes be?  A blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of thing?

Welcome to the forum!  I started watching The Weather Channel in the late 1980s, and, like you, I really miss the days when TWC actually broadcast weather all the time.  There certainly was something comforting about it, wasn't there?

Breaks in regular weather programing were extremely rare, but these special documentaries were almost always of very high quality.  I remember Marshall Seese hosting "Force Four" about Hurricane Hugo - that was a wonderful documentary and I enjoyed watching it the few times I got to see it.

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion

Considering the limitations that exist by delivering a local forecast by such a method, I think this is as good as it gets.  I like it, though I certainly prefer having a cable Star more.

Yeah, but this being Florida, I'm almost afraid to ask what might be lurking in all that water.

The parking lot in front of my apartment building's been flooded since last night.  Daytona Beach has had more than seven inches of rain in the past day or so, and more's coming.  Good thing I'm on vacation this week - walking to work (I don't drive) would have been nightmarish.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: Comcast/Xfinity

The Comcast headend in Longview, WA has downconverted the HD Weather Channel feed onto the SD channel (channel 47) which shows an IS2 from nearby Vancouver. I don't quite understand why Comcast is replacing the SD channel with a 4:3 letterboxed HD feed. Perhaps to save money?  :dunno:

If they've downconverted the HD feed onto an SD channel and removed the HD channel altogether, that's something I've never heard of before.  However, repeating the HD feed on the SD channel while keeping the HD channel, too, is becoming a common situation.

TWC is preempting all programming for Odile Coverage. Sidebar is blank, with Hurricane trivia.

The upper half of the sidebar has been such a waste 95% of the time.

So, let's see...

NBC ordered The Weather Channel to vastly increase its amount of non-weather programming.  Ratings suffer, and now NBC wants out because it failed.

Yep.

Because sports often take place outdoors in the weather?

Sorry... that's the best I could come up with, and even that's very flimsy, albeit accurate.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: Cablevision Inconsistency

Hey,

I am a subscriber to Cablevision here in NY and I am on the Farmingdale IS2HD. I went to iO channel 600 and added TWC to my quickviews and I noticed when watching TWC through quickviews I am getting a totally different feed that has the good ol' IS with Jackson's narrations.

It's nothing earth shattering but I thought I'd share it.

Would it be the IS2 (16:9 ratio) or IS2 Jr. (4:3 ratio)?
