Hurricane Central / Re: Subtropical Storm Beryl
« on: May 25, 2012, 11:50:13 PM »
The tropical storm warning covers my area.  It looks like I'll be walking to and from work in the middle of quite a rainstorm.  This reminds me of the not-quite-a-tropical-system that I had to trudge through in October, and that was NOT fun!!

It's only a matter of time before The Weather Channel becomes all long-form. Lets just enjoy the live broadcasts while they last.

Sadly, I think you're right.  The time will come.  And, eventually, even the WeatherStars won't be used anymore.

Speaking of the elderly, I can't imagine what one old person might saying if they came across long-form programming on TWC. They might be saying, "Hey, where's my weather?!?" I bet almost none of the old people have all the fancy computer and internet technology and smartphones like the younger people do, where they get their weather from nowadays. The elderly would just probably stop watching TWC altogether and just watch something else on the tube. I think the programming director at TWC needs to think about that IMO  :hmm:

Generally, marketers stop caring about people once they reach the age of 50 or so.  The television industry by and large cares about younger people - the ones who tend to spend the most money.  Advertisers aren't as interested in people with fixed incomes.

TWN up in Canada doesn't even show longform!

Canada's The Weather Network is considered an essential service and is even tied into the country's emergency warning system.  They could never get away with doing what The Weather Channel is doing.

The OCMs are going to have to find part-time jobs to supplement their incomes.

Programming and Graphics / Re: Wake Up With Al

I understand what you are saying but this is the only Weather Channel show that has this problem.
MSNBC broadcasts from the same building as Wake Up With Al, they show guests on an LCD monitor in studio and there is no audio and video delay.
The feeds are probably more local (IE, at the NBC headquarters.) When the video on the monitors are seen, it's coming from Atlanta most likely. Traveling that distance, why wouldn't it have a delay like that? There's a 5 second delay from TWC to your TV anyway (Well, that's required by regulations for content censoring).

You know, European audiences saw what happened to Janet Jackson and said, "So what?"  Casual non-sexual partial nudity isn't uncommon on European television.  But, apparently, cleavage is perfectly welcome on American TV, but a mostly-obscured-by-jewelry nipple isn't.  Go figure.

They need to fix the 2 second audio and video delay on the HDTV in the studio.
Any time someone on the monitor talking it's 2 seconds behind.

I explained elsewhere that there is an inherent delay in digital broadcasting as opposed to analogue.  Analogue broadcasting is essentially "what you see is what you get" and is as instantaneous as the time necessary for the signal to travel from the transmitter to the receiver (or through a cable).  Digital broadcasting, however, must be encoded before being transmitted, and the receiver must then decode it before it can be showed.  This encoding and decoding takes time, hence the delay.

European digital television has many advantages over American television.  However, American digital television does have one advantage: it decodes and displays a signal twice as quickly as in the European system.

This Article proves that Al Roker has completely ruined TWC with his Long-Form Programs.

TWC's schedule is now like a Normal TV Station's Schedule rather than a Cable Network News' Schedule .

You're right.

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Central 2012

Here's my meteorological answer regarding what to do with the hurricane season dates:  Get rid of them altogether, because there is no such thing as a hurricane season!  The atmosphere will allow the development of a tropical cyclone whenever conditions are right irregardless of the time of year.  In the history of records kept for the Atlantic basin, a tropical cyclone has existed in every month of the year.

I like your thinking!  Except for the word "irregardless."  :)

English has always been a weak area for me,

Just imagine how you'd do reading classical Chinese literature without translation, then. :bleh:

Well, I can tell you this: my school district no longer teaches spelling and grammar to its students  instead, they use the CollegeBoard's SpringBoard program in English classes instead of the traditional grammar and literature that should be taught  :ermm:

That curriculum has been in place since my 8th grade year in school and since stepping into 9th grade (because of it), never once have I been taught a new grammar lesson or reiterated on one I've learned in the past :itsok:

That's not only terribly sad, but further proof of why America's schools always rank last when compared to those of other nations.

Plus I can tolerate math a lot more than writing/reading.

It's amazing how completely opposite people can be, isn't it?  I love reading and writing, yet the mere thought of math sends me into convulsions.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: Is cable TV going downhill?
« on: May 16, 2012, 07:51:11 PM »
Eventually it's going to become apparent that "by appointment" television viewing is eventually going to die.  Because of my DVR (and Hulu plays a minor role, too), maybe only 10% of what I watch on TV is currently being broadcast at that time.  Everything else is recorded for watching later.  Sometimes "later" means in 5 minutes, in an hour, in a day, in a month...

This isn't the first time TWC has done this.  They heavily advertised the "Smurfs" movie last year.
