Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion

I just noticed something... the new (meaning newer than the DirecTV local forecast) national local forecast LDL must be extremely annoying (not to mention totally useless) to viewers now, being visible just from Sacremento to Washington, D.C.

I never understood why they don't extend the DirecTV forecast out by another several seconds just to fill the entire local forecast segment.  Cable viewers don't get national radar and satellite views, so I don't know why the DirecTV viewers have to.

General Discussion / Weather radio with live voices only
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:28:16 PM »
I don't know why or what happened, but the Daytona Beach weather radio station is being run only with live voice recordings of all the bulletins and announcements.  No computer voices whatsoever.

And the meteorologists reading the bulletins (and there are a couple of them) sound completely disinterested.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: TWC No Audio
« on: August 02, 2012, 11:11:19 PM »
Thanks for the advice, Martin. I knew from the beginning that this audio outage problem was on TWC's end.

No, the problem is with your local headend, not with The Weather Channel.

Basically, if it weren't for the high ratings they get during hurricane and blizzard coverage, I'm sure they would eliminate all live programming.

I think you're right.  The day will come when the LDL, local forecast, and all Star output will eventually end, too.  After all, TV Guide network hasn't even resembled its roots for a very long time.

At least to know it's nice that she's leaving of her own free will instead of being forced out.

If they loose more and more viewers, its possable that some cable and satellite providers (except COMCA$T) would likely drop TWC for good and replace it with a rival weather station like WeatherNation or AccuWeather.

If TWC continues in the direction it's in, I would actually welcome a new station taking its place that focuses on... believe it or not... reporting and forecasting the weather.

Because this generation is so stupid and hooked to anything on a television or video screen. These buffoons will watch anything.

I agree.  Quality means nothing anymore.

We're getting the red "bar" for Monday on our LOT8's now due to "continuing drought conditions will persist on MONDAY." First time I've seen it activated for anything other than severe or tropical weather.

That's a very interesting use of the red bar.  I also had no idea they'd use it for long-term events like a drought. :dunno:

Wow - I never thought I'd see a 4000 set up for international use like that before in the TWC format!  Great work!

Glad you liked it! i was thinking about doing this for awhile and finally got time time to complete it this week.

It was very interesting watching, and much appreciated.  My guess is that you used actual observations instead of just making things up - must have been quite a lot of work.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: Is cable TV going downhill?
« on: July 11, 2012, 10:28:41 PM »
I remember asking to have a set of channels added for $2.50 so I could get Game Show Network....2003.  They changed themselves to GSN in March 2004, and the cable company removed the channel completely by September.  I have not seen it since.

I'd go insane if I couldn't get my daily hour of "Match Game."

He wants to see far less complaining about it from here on out, or he's going to take a lot more action in the near future.

This statement worries me.  Does it mean that "fans" aren't allowed to have complaints about the current direction of the network?  Or, let me phrase it another way... Are "fans" supposed to be those who support the network in its current incarnation without longing for a return to how it was pre-NBC?  I used to be a fan of The Weather Channel, but I'm sure as heck not a fan now that it's turned into an entertainment network.

Central Florida is going through a bit of a blackout of its own.  The cable company has stopped showing the local NBC affiliate, its sister station (a CW affiliate), and their two subchannels: MeTV (which I'm really missing) and This TV.

The local NBC affiliate has been replaced by an NBC affiliate from northeastern Pennsylvania (roughly 1,000 miles away, but Time Warner's "go-to" blackout replacement for NBC, apparently).  CW has been replaced by the TV Guide Channel (usually unavailable on standard cable).  MeTV has been converted into a limited NBC On Demand channel to repeat some primetime programming.  This TV has just been taken off the lineup altogether.

According to statements by both the NBC affiliate and Bright House Networks, the retransmission negotiations had been going very badly for months, the deadline was extended, and then negotiations just broke down altogether.  On the other hand, Bright House's subscribers are already very unhappy about local news being replaced with that of the Poconos (despite still receiving the full NBC output), and the total loss of CW, MeTV, and This TV.  In addition, the real sticking point is that, by its own admission, the local NBC affiliate has lost fully 50% of its audience, which is really going to start eating into the advertising budget.

I was reading AFDs and came across a few that made me laugh. This one from March 18 out of Nashville, though, was kinda disturbing. Wonder what kind of bad day at the office this fella had.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN
335 AM CDT SUN MAR 18 2012

.DISCUSSION...A WEAK SHORTWAVE OVER THE OH/TN VALLEYS CONTINUES TO
TRAVEL NEWD...PUSHING MOST OF THE MID/HI LEVEL MOISTURE INTO THE
UPPER OH VALLEY AND GREAT LAKES. THUS I HAVE SHOWN A DECREASING
POP FOR TODAY AS THE DRIER AIR MOVES IN. I KNOW...I ENDED A
SENTENCE WITH A PREPOSITION...BUT..ACCORDING TO "GRAMMAR GIRL"
IT'S SOMETIMES OK TO DO THAT.{:)

LOOKING WEST...THE UPPER TROUGH ALONG THE WEST COAST IS LOOKING
VERY BODACIOUS. FOR THE MIT GRADS...THATS DEEP...ENERGETIC AND
NEGATIVELY TILTED. MOTHER NATURE PULLS MOST OF THE TROUGH NEWD
THROUGH THE NRN ROCKIES/PLAINS. BUT WAIT...SHE FORGOT SOMETHING
AND BY WED AM IT'S SITTING OVER THE SRN PLAINS. IT'S LIKE SHE
DIDN'T BRING HER DOGGIE BAG AND JUST DECIDED TO DISCRETELY WALK
AWAY.

SO THE PILE OF...ENERGY...SITTING OVER THE SRN PLAINS EVENTUALLY
PUSHES ENEWD INTO THE OH/TN VALLEYS ON THU NGT AND FRI. ON THU
MORNING THE GFS AND ECM ARE IN DECENT AGREEMENT ON THE POSITION OF
THIS CUTOFF LOW. BUT THAT DOESN'T LAST LONG. THE ECM INVENTS A
VIGOROUS WAVE IN THE NRN STREAM TO DROP THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES
AND PUSH THE LOW TOWARD THE SE COAST BY SAT EVE. WHILE THE GFS...
SORT KICKS THE CAN...ERR LOW...DOWN THE ROAD. LAGGING BEHIND ABOUT
24 HRS. MY CRYSTAL BALL IS IN THE SHOP FOR REPAIRS...BUT RECENT STUDIES
HAVE SHOWN THAT THE ECM VERIFIES A BIT BETTER...SO I HAVE SHOWN A
DECREASING POP ON SAT AND DRY ON SUN. MORE GOOD NEWS...TEMPS FOR
FRI-SUN WILL DROP TO ONLY 5-8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL INSTEAD OF THE
CURRENT 15-20 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. WELL THAT'S ALL THE METEOROLOGY
MY LITTLE BRAIN CAN MUSTER AT THIS EARLY HOUR. CIAO.

Funny?  Maybe.  That's in the eye of the beholder.  But I think it's grossly unprofessional - that kind of writing has no business being in an official document issued by a government agency.  Does the NWS want people to take it seriously as a meteorological organization, or as a platform for aspiring stand-up comedians?
