Maybe I just usually don't check the forum so "early" in the morning...

It's 10:00 am and there are no new posts in the forum since late last night?!  Did we go offline or something... or did all of you find lives away from the computer?

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion
« on: March 26, 2013, 10:03:13 PM »
The XL for my area has been looping the LF for about 10 min now. Kinda neat, even though there is no audio.

Are there any additional products that you're seeing that aren't usually shown?  (Edit: I see in the video that there aren't any.  :( )  I ask this because I remember when the WeatherStar III and 4000 got stuck in a loop (usually due to a loss of the TWC broadcast signal or other technical error) they would show every product they had built into them for that geographic area.

When I lived in suburban Boston, the XL we had was very bad, and I can't overstate that.  During the morning programming, it was almost guaranteed that there would be no updates for a couple of hours, and all the products would eventually display "no report."  It glitched quite often, even at the best of times.  It even got so bad that the cable company had to switch from Boston's XL to Worcester's during reboots.  (And there's often a huge difference between the weather in Boston and in Worcester.)  Despite adopting both the 4000 and the XL later than many other areas, the cable company fortunately upgraded to the IntelliStar at the first opportunity.

General Discussion / Re: Alternative(s) to The Weather Channel
« on: March 26, 2013, 09:55:57 PM »
The Orlando/Daytona Beach market used to have weather on digital substations of two local channels (one used to be NBC's Weather Plus), but these have since both closed down (one is now MeTV and the other is something in Spanish).  There is no AccuWeather Channel or Weather Nation here.  No WeatherScan, either.

All that we do have as an alternative to The Weather Channel is "Travel Weather Now" operated by the cable company, and the presence of this station adds a lot of pressure towards not adopting a 24-hour weather network in the area.  It was recently revamped to actually cover local weather throughout Florida (mostly forecasts, satellite, and radar - no current conditions or, bizarrely, no active weather advisories) with some additional information for travelers.  Previously, it was only for travel weather throughout the U.S. and the world with virtually no local weather information.

I think this is very foolhardy, since central Florida has some very active weather, especially during the spring and summer.  This isn't Tornado Alley, but it comes in a close second during certain times of the year.  At least all of the local broadcast stations will break into regular programming (whenever possible) with meteorologists in front of maps whenever there's a tornado warning in the area.

Otherwise, though, the only realistic ways to get weather on demand are to go online or to listen to the NOAA Weather Radio, which, surprisingly, virtually no one I know down here has.  I have one in every room.

Start getting nervous when they promote "Coast Guard Nevada."

I gave up watching TWC and posted this on TWC's Facebook (1993 - 2013)

Like you and a lot of other longtime viewers, it just breaks my heart that TWC no longer cares about smooth jazz music or 2-minute LOT8s   I wish I could be TWC's programming director or the person who is in charge of the LOT8s. That way, the first thing I would do is eliminate the vocal music, bring back smooth jazz, cancel all long-form shows that have nothing to do with weather, and extend the LOT8s. But that is all just a fantasy, which brings even more pain and heartbreak  :(

It's too bad TWC doesn't listen to people like you.  I would love for The Weather Channel to go back to the way it used to be.  Unfortunately, I seriously doubt that will ever happen.  Cable networks all over are losing sight of their original missions.  Everyone just wants to copy everyone else now.

Whoops!  Another one for the blooper reel!

How, though, does something like that even happen?!  Someone must have been goofing off and didn't reset things to normal before that graphic had to air.

I think I'm in the minority, but I miss the large LDL.  It contained so much more weather information, and, considering how weather information is at such a premium on TWC right now, it could be very useful.

You could have it repaired, but if it's not under warranty, the cost of the repair depends on what the problem is.  Otherwise, your only real option is to buy a new unit.  It's very hard to find VCRs for sale without DVD players these days.

Also it makes no sense to put the video in a smaller window if they are not going to put the LDL on screen all the time.
Keep the video full size and have the scroll at the bottom.

I suppose they have to prepare all graphics ahead of time with the assumption that the LDL will be on.

I'm just thinking... shouldn't the word "potential" be removed from this thread's title?
