No more warnings from Google Chrome on either of my computers now.

Many, many thanks to Martin for working to sort this all out and for explaining things to us!

I use primarily Google Chrome, and the warnings are still there.

I could use Firefox, but then I'd have to manually copy URLs, and... I just don't like Firefox.

That's good news!  I'll just keep clicking through the warnings on Chrome, then.

Yes, I've seen it on the Daytona Beach Intellistar before.

Thanks, everyone, for your help!  I hope we'll be getting some answers soon.

Right now I'm using only my second laptop, which runs Ubuntu, to access this forum.  Just in case anything catastrophic should happen, this computer doesn't have any personal information, and everything on it can be easily reinstalled if necessary.

In case it's useful to anyone, this is the warning screen Google Chrome gives me whenever I visit...

When this problem first started for me, Norton Anti-Virus would block access to the site on my Windows computer, and Google Chrome would block access on my Ubuntu computer.  Now, Google Chrome blocks access on both computers, even before Norton gets involved.

Right now the only way I can access this forum is by using Firefox on my Ubuntu computer and refreshing the page a lot.

Serious anti-virus problems going on here this evening.  When I tried logging into the forum my anti-virus program went absolutely bonkers, so I switched to my Ubuntu computer, and even here Google Chrome prevented me from accessing the forum because of malware warnings.  I just barely managed to get in, and even now Google is screaming at me... but Ubuntu is generally better protected from malware than Windows, so I'm taking a chance just to post this message.

Local Forecast / Re: Question About WeatherStar4000 BG and Radar Font
« on: June 29, 2013, 10:24:58 AM »
As I said, the technology of the time limited how smoothly the gradient could be drawn.  I can't imagine why anyone would design a background that was deliberately "noisy."

it seems like on the gradient background there's some noise. Is that really the case? :dunno:

Are you talking about the bitrot degredation on the background?  That's a common problem with the 4000s now that they're getting so old.  However, as originally designed, the background was supposed to be a smooth gradient (as smooth as that technology would allow).  The best way to see the background other than just as a frame at the edges of the screen was on the "Almanac" page, where it was used for the sunrise/sunset information, the "Air Quality" screen (in California), where it was used for the entire background, and if a page didn't load immediately, you could see the background while the blue box was being drawn in front of it.  The 4000 was essentially one layer on top of another, ad nauseum, and sometimes the computer had a problem drawing certain layers at certain times.  If the top banner didn't load, for example, you'd see the top line as used on the WeatherStar III, as the 4000 used all the same information as the III, but it was able to draw graphics to replace some textual information.

My next question is about the font for "Local Radar" and "Current Radar". Is that a different font from the STAR4000 fonts? None of the ones I have installed match the font for that text.  The closest one is the STAR Radar font, but it's all CAPS. :hmm:

The original radar font was that which you see in the font set.  However, as a result of the most recent update to the 4000, which was some time ago already, the font changed to a more streamlined and narrower helvetica-type font.  This hasn't been included in any of the font sets that I've seen available.

I like the smoothness of the radar/satellite loops as opposed to before, but the day-by-day maps are just awful.  You get seasick watching them!  Even worse, the maps themselves transition from one view to the next smoothly, but the precipitation drawings don't transition - they just jump from one slide to the next.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: HD feed on SD channel

My cable box doesn't do that.  Channels up to 999 are SD, and 1000 and above are HD.

In general, I think it's a good idea.  If TWC mandated the HD feed on SD channels, they would be able to use more of the screen during weather programming, instead of putting the weather maps inside the SD-safe boxes, which is a terrible waste of widescreen.

The downside, of course, is that not everyone has access to the IS2 yet, which would result in satellite feeds for many more people (which helps no one), or, if it's even technically possible, a bizarre merger of the HD feed with SD Stars.
