General Weather Chat / Re: Farmers' Almanac Winter 2013-2014 Outlook
« on: August 26, 2013, 11:29:00 AM »
Please... I don't want another "chilly and wet" winter!

I've already experienced two winters in central Florida.  Two winters ago it was reasonably warm, though we did have a few brief periods of extreme (for this region) cold, including lows in the upper 20s.  Last winter we didn't get as cold, but temperatures throughout most of the season were consistently below average - even into the mid-upper 30s.

A 40" TV for $200.  A bargain is a bargain!

While we slept, over just the past couple of days three tropical features have formed in the far western Central Pacific: Pewa, Unala, and Three-C.  The first two crossed into the Western Pacific after only a few advisories by the CPHC, and Three-C, not expected to last much longer or even to intensify into a tropical storm, is likely going to dissipate shortly after crossing the International Date Line.

In fact, Pewa was the first storm named by the CPHC since 2010.

Take it easy, folks.  There's no need to start an argument.

Apparently, no one watched Sesame Street growing up.  For those who are unfamiliar with children's TV and with word play, Oscar the Grouch is a green monster that lives in a garbage can.

Yeah, what's weird is that on NHC's site, it says it's the remnants of Oscar.

Don't be such a grouch.

Hopefully this network will enjoy widespread carriage throughout the country.  It has the potential to be everything The Weather Channel once was.  I'll be looking forward to this.

General Weather Chat / Re: Summer Heat (Lack of)

There's a lot of lightning off in the distance, but no rain here.  I'm enjoying watching the lightning, and my windows are wide open to let in the fresh breeze.  It's a good night.  :)

I'm sorry.  That's never a fun thing to have to go through.  It last happened to me three years ago, and I still shudder thinking about it.  Fortunately, I keep comprehensive backups, though some files that get updated very frequently (such as my financial software database) aren't backed up as often as they should be.

July in Daytona Beach has been in the 80s, as usual, with high humidity, but the most alarming statistic is that there have only been two rain-free days the entire month, and today was one of them (assuming it doesn't rain in the next four hours, and it might).

Local Forecast / Re: Emergency Feed Sightings

The emergency feed appeared at 5:18PM ET, and it looks like the EF graphics have reverted back to WPS

Maybe the emergency feed has its own emergency feed?

Weatherscan Discussion / Re: What exactly is weatherscan?
« on: July 29, 2013, 10:28:39 AM »
No, this non-stop local forecast is the only programming on Weatherscan.  It is a continuous loop of local forecast information, and nothing but that.

In case there is any confusion, I should mention that these are two separate channels we're talking about.  The Weather Channel is one channel, and Weatherscan is an entirely different channel that some cable providers offer to their subscribers.

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Dorian

Unless you got an advance copy of the 11:00 advisory, I think you're jumping the gun a little bit.  Who's to say it's going to become a tropical storm on the #2 advisory?  Or #3?  This one apparently has a rough road ahead of it, fast-moving, dry air...

BTW, does anyone know that all you have to do is turn on a radio to the AM dial and if there's lightning nearby, you can hear the sound on the radio?

That's so annoying!  Fortunately, the only radio station I ever listen to is NPR, and that's on FM.  :)

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Chantal
« on: July 11, 2013, 12:08:47 PM »
I always get confused with this, but if Chantal's remnants develop into a TS again, will it be Chantal or Dorian?

If the remnants remain identifiable with any sort of cohesion, any regenerated tropical system that results will once again be Chantal.  This last happened in the Atlantic just last year with Nadine.  On September 21 it degenerated from a tropical storm to a sub-tropical storm, and on September 22 it degenerated into a post-tropical system.  Just a day and a half later it regenerated as a tropical storm and kept its name.  Also last year, T.D. 7 degenerated into a tropical wave on August 11, but on August 17 the system regenerated into a tropical storm and was named Helene.  Since the remnants between August 11 and 17 could still be tracked as a single system, the regenerated storm was considered to be a continuation of the tropical depression that degenerated on the 11th.

Programming and Graphics / Re: New Graphics coming to TWC
« on: July 04, 2013, 12:39:39 AM »
Replacing all the XL, 4000, and Jr. units with a new unit just seems strange at this stage.  Why not just upgrade every non-Intellistar to an Intellistar?  It's one thing to have a current unit alongside legacy units that have simply aged into "legacy" status, but to unilaterally decide that old units need to go and be replaced by another non-standard unit... that's something I can't comprehend.

When the 3000 had to be replaced because new FCC regulations required its retirement - that's one thing.  But an arbitrary decision like this makes no sense.
