General Discussion / Re: Ubuntu
« on: October 09, 2010, 09:30:45 PM »
Okay, so my windows 7 has been being extremely slow lately. So today I tried out Ubuntu, and have to say it is an awesome OS, but need some help with getting Microsoft Office 2010 running in the OS, I know that it does not usually support this OS, but I've heard of using a program named WINE to allow it to be installed. I can't get the office online download to work since i have a key, but no disc. It says the source cannot be trusted or something like this. Anyone know how to fix this problem? Any help will be appreciated.

I use Ubuntu, and before that, I dabbled in Knoppix.

WINE is still an experimental program.  It's designed to emulate a Windows environment to allow Windows programs to run in Linux.  However, there's still a lot of work to be done on it, and it generally works best with simple programs.  I would honestly be very, very surprised if you could get Microsoft Office applications to work properly under WINE.

IntelliStar 2 Discussion / Re: IntelliStar 2 Beta Launch

Tyler btw is having trouble getting on the site since the move. Nothing new that I have heard from him or anyone else. Slowly rolling out but its likely going to be many months before most people get it, if they get it at all. Remember too that your cable company has to actually request it.

Is that because cable companies already have the local forecast on the SD version of the TWC?  I'm hoping that Time Warner decides to get it because I like watching the HD version but I have to flip to the SD version for the local forecast.

It's about money.  It costs money, and no small money at that, to install a WeatherStar system.  Since the SD channels already have a WeatherStar (I believe it's even a requirement that every cable operator that carries The Weather Channel have a WeatherStar, or at least have access to a nearby one), it's obviously a lower priority for them to get a second WeatherStar for the HD feed.  For the cable company, so long as it costs less for them, they really have no problem with you flipping from the HD channel to the SD channel (or to Weatherscan, also SD) for the local forecast.  Or they assume people will be happy with the national local forecast, or simply won't notice the difference at all.  The casual viewer probably couldn't care less, assuming he even knew what was going on in the first place.

Everything Else TWC / Re: TWC Getting Back Into Weather?

Guys, please, Martin specifically said not to count the OCM layoffs as a part of judging TWC in this thread. :hammer:

How do you all think they are doing (OCM choices aside)?

I know we all dislike the OCM situation, but that's not really what we're talking about in this thread. ;)

OCMs are literally the "human face" of the channel, so, instructions aside, it is just hard to not focus on this issue.

I see that nobody got the hint that this topic was not to discuss TWCs choice of OCMs

I think this is a major issue with many of us here, and it's not just going to go away.

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Otto

Thus, if Otto reaches hurricane-force winds, it'll automatically jump to a fully tropical cyclone as a hurricane.
Are you sure? I've read on other websites that subtropical cyclones that reach hurricane force are still referred to as "subtropical storms."

Though there's something of a grey area, if a subtropical storm reaches hurricane force, it is immediately classified as a tropical cyclone of hurricane force.  The National Hurricane Center does not have a category "sub-tropical hurricane," as it considers all hurricanes to be tropical cyclones.

That said, there have been several storms which probably would fit a "sub-tropical hurricane" status... I can think of several Nor'Easters I've lived through that could fit the bill.  However, they're not classified as such.  My opinion is simple: if it has winds of at least 74 mph and an eye, it should be classified as a hurricane one way or the other... and who cares what month it is?!

The only thing they're using the video wall for now is the news and show title graphics.

I bet whoever wrote the check for that big video wall is probably kicking himself at least a little now... assuming he's still with the company.

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Otto
« on: October 08, 2010, 01:33:14 PM »
Can you say hurricane? Otto has just now been upgraded to hurricane status, making it the eighth hurricane of the season. Winds are 75 mph, and the system is tearing ENE at 17 mph.

Otto has brought the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season into one of the Top 10 busiest in recorded history. 2010 sits at 10th, tied with 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2007.

I remember Nana in 1990... John Hope was explaining that this was the first time since the naming conventions began in 1950 that a storm received an "N" name.  Not an impressive storm meteorologically, but it certainly made 1990 an important year... fortunately, not for any serious landfalling storms!

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi of Jersey Shore on MTV. Surely you've heard of the mockery of her.

Just what I want to read about on a forum dedicated to The Weather Channel!   :hmm:

OT: Is the direct link weather.com not working for anyone else? I get a blank "Page Not Found" error but can get to weather.com through any other link. (i.e. www.weather.com/home or preview.weather.com)

It works fine for me.

1. Space your words. (Neworleans, LA isn't being recognized as a city)
2. Obviously you are not a TWC Meterologist
3. I think the forums are working. No testing needed.  ;)
Trevor I was testing how I post here thanks.

Nothing wrong with learning the ropes, but #2 still puzzles me.  At least your weather indicator is working now.  :)

I'm half an inch shorter than you, though my work shoes have a thick enough sole to make me your height.
