Local Forecast / Re: Local on the 8s split screen
« on: January 25, 2011, 04:42:02 PM »
Maybe they're testing something?

Do you think it's possible that this split screen could potentially replace the seperate local forecast altogether?  After all, that's 12 minutes every hour with only the most limited of advertising.

Right now, 4:33 pm (ET), a Local on the 8s split screen.

Local on the 8s at 33 minutes after the hour?  :dunno:

This is actually the first time I've seen it, and I'm disappointed that it's just a national thing, as opposed to the local IntelliStar overlaying local information on it.  It could certainly be done.

P.S.: Technical glitch - when the split screen ended, a couple of seconds later the whole picture went black.  When it came back rather quickly, the LDL disappeared - no national or local LDL.

IntelliStar 2 Discussion / Re: IntelliStar 2 Beta Launch
« on: January 25, 2011, 01:10:40 PM »

Okay... is there at least any guarantee that there will be a nationwide rollout of IS2, or is it likely, or at least possible, that some headends will simply never get one (or be able to use one, thus precluding getting one)?

Simply from his statement earlier it's a Headend to Headend Basis, so think of it as those areas who really need one would get one (if there are no obstacles blocking that installment) in which Comcast's Cable Network is from to my knowledge "Incompatible with the IS2 at this time" which halts a Installation on any Comcast HD headend altogether for the present time.

So, in other words, any individual TWC HD viewer may or may not eventually get the IS2, and Comcast viewers will probably have to wait the longest before it comes... if it ever does eventually come.

Fail.

It's not that they are avoiding Comcast, its just a compatibility issues. Sorry, but I can't really get into it.

Can you at least give us an approximate timeline?
There is no timeline.

Local Forecast / Re: Satellite LF Sightings

Satellite LF at 4:08 PM EST, the usual time

There has to be a reason for this, but what could it be? :dunno:

Some Intellistars in the Northeast still had Wind Chill Advisories/Warnings still fed in the system (which expired at 11am) but the Satellite LF was cued to fix the error.

Wow - there actually was an answer!!  :worship:

My area doesn't get the local-localonthe8s forecast, its the national feed. How do you get it or do you have to request it?

Are you talking about the standard definition or high definition feed?  Very few high definition feeds are equipped with IntelliStars to receive a local forecast, but the vast majority of standard definition feeds have a Star.

However, this is for cable.  Satellite viewers may or may not have a local forecast generated based on their zip code, but this is a combination of local information and the national feed, and looks quite different than a local forecast generated by a Star at a cable headend.

Should TWC bring back the 3 Day Outlook? (like the XL uses)

No.  It's simply a relic from the distant past.

The WeatherStar III and before only displayed text.  At first, the extended forecast was written out like the local forecast, but in the 1990s it changed to a 3-day tabular format similar to the WeatherStar 4000.  The WeatherStar 4000 didn't have the resolution necessary to display anything more than a 3-day forecast.  (Like the III, the 4000 also displayed a prose-style extended forecast at the very beginning.)

When the XL came out, it simply carried over many of the details from the 4000, and this included the 3-day extended forecast.  There's really no reason to keep it now.  A 7-day forecast gives you a lot more information (though forecasts aren't perfectly accurate that far out, they at least can give you a general idea of what to expect.)  Showing a 3-day forecast now would not only give you less information, but the only benefit I can see would be to see really large weather icons, if someone's interested in that.

In terms of who is allowed to post where, when, and why, this is, sadly, not only the strictest forum I've ever visited, but the rules sometimes seem downright hysterical.

Is it really worth criticising everyone who makes such a minor "violation," especially in public?  Maintaining order is one thing, and a worthy cause, but sometimes it just sounds like people are after a power fix, and that disturbs me.
What specifically are you referring to in this topic?

I posted something about bumping a 6 month old topic when you could have personal messaged him...and then I realized I went too far and deleted the post.

Yes, that's the specific incident in this thread that I'm referring to.  Of course, it's not an isolated incident in the forum.

Partial Satellite LF at 4:08 PM. My IS ued about 10-15 seconds late or so.

Ditto here.  And the IS ended late by the same amount of time.

In addition, the local LDL kept going off all afternoon after only about half of the time, with the 2nd half of programming (before the commercials and local forecast) showing the national LDL.  The strange thing is that a "chime" sounded every time this happened!

Maybe this will speed up the implimentation of the IS2, at least at Comcast headends?

Still, I doubt it.

It's not illegal. I don't know where you guys get this information from. The STAR agreement does not state that TWC owns anything, other than the fact they can elect to buy it back for less money than it was paid for. And as for the videocipher, there is nothing illegal about that either. Once the account is closed, or is unpaid, or the digital feed is used, the videocipher isn't sent any new keys, so eventually loses video. No legal trouble, no lawyers, no jail time, no arrests. It baffles me where you guys come up with this stuff.

No offense, but you're asking us to take the word of a member who has made two posts total in this forum.  Doesn't necessarily mean you're wrong, but do you have any actual proof, such as a copy of a contract, to show us?  Otherwise, you have to admit it's a bit of a stretch asking us to believe someone who's just appeared out of the blue and says, "believe me because I say I'm right."
