I'd like to know what qualifies Brian Norcorss to have the title "Storm Specialist."

Right place, right time.

The tropical season starting in April?!  I certainly hope not... though it's not impossible.

Does anyone know what would cause the strange image seen at 2:41?

It seems that a camera was pointed at someone, and that image was partially superimposed on the weather map or on top of it - it's hard to tell just what layer it's on, since no one's standing in front of the map, so it's basically a 2-D view for that brief instant.

Chalk it down to someone in the control room not paying attention to what he's doing.

Severe Weather / Re: Severe Weather Season 2011/Severe Wx thread

For the past few days we were forecast to get thunderstorms every night, with possibilities as high as 40%.  Not only did we not get thunderstorms, but we barely even got any raindrops at all to speak of.

The last thunder we had here was a couple of freak episodes of thundersnow in the middle of winter.  But I want a real, good ol'-fashioned thunderstorm.  Not anything that's going to destroy houses or kill people, but just strong enough to keep me entertained for a while.  :smoke2:

TWC is a monopoly in cable.

CNN used to be a cable monopoly, too, until MSNBC and some other network whose name I can't remember joined the group.

Release is supposedly Q2 '11 i wonder how long it would take for comcast to carry it.

From one Comcast subscriber to another, I think the network will have folded by the time Comcast even THINKS of carrying it.

At launch, WeatherNation TV, which is headquartered in Denver Colorado, will offer a weather news format 24 hours a day that will not be interrupted by documentary, entertainment or reality programming, Norton says.

Sounds like a good deal!  Throw in localized forecasts like The Weather Channel has, and I'll certainly watch!

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion

How interesting!

I had never seen a national map for the "regional" radar before.  I wonder if anyone actually ever sees this under normal circumstances.  The metro forcast map is just hilarious!

How interesting!  I used to have "nightmares" when our 4000 was replaced with an XL over a decade ago that, for whatever reason, the XL would again be replaced with a 4000!

General Discussion / Re: A Bunch of B.S.?
« on: March 18, 2011, 04:32:07 PM »
Am I more inclined to believe that a hurricane will strike Florida "in the near future" simply because an "expert" says he believes it will happen?  Of course not.  Florida is regularly subject to hurricane strikes; therefore, it's something I expect to happen every summer.  Likewise, the Pacific coast of the U.S. is in an area subject to earthquakes.  Whether an "expert" says one's coming soon or not doesn't make any difference.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Betty Davis - Departure
« on: March 16, 2011, 09:15:55 PM »
Betty Davis is the reason I watched TWC. Now that she is gone I don't watch so much. Did Vivian Brown drive her away because she is jelous of her?  I hate Vivian Brown's nasal tone and turn the channel as soon as I hear her voice. TWC made a big mistake letting Betty Davis go.

I think that has to be the stupidest post I've ever read here.

P.S.: Interesting "emergency feed," isn't it?  Thank goodness for the LDL, if for nothing else.  Pretty good music, too!  :)

Great clips - thanks for sharing!  I remember that storm very well.  Has it already been eighteen years?! :o

Probably never will ever no how many people is missing, etc.  This country needs to prepare for something like this.
What?  Japan is probably the most prepared country for earthquakes in the entire world.  They were even warned about 1 minute before it hit.
This country means "America".

America, to an extent, is prepared for natural disasters.  However, the United States is much larger than Japan and also faces more varied natural threats.

The parts of the country that are used to earthquakes have stronger building codes than in other places.  However, if a rare earthquake should strike in an unexpected and unprepared place, there can be a disaster.  The west coast, including Hawaii and Alaska, are the most prepared for a tsunami (though, really, what can one do?).  However, should an Atlantic tsunami (similar to the one that affected Newfoundland in the 1920s) strike... good luck to the people on the eastern seaboard.  The South gets paralyzed in a snowfall that Northerners hardly even notice.

Since Japan is small, it's more homogeneous in terms of the disasters it can face, and the whole country can prepare accordingly.  The United States is larger and faces a much wider variety of natural disasters, though each kind is generally limited to a local scale.

But, as I already said, it's impossible to prepare for everything, especially against Mother Nature.
