Local Forecast / IntelliStar Changes
« on: July 25, 2011, 02:43:33 PM »
I just saw my first Daypart forecast on the Intellistar in a long, long time.  Too bad it's not on more often.

Edit: I just realized why - the local radar is unavailable, so it's shown for a considerably shorter period of time.  The radar picked the "perfect" time to go out - there are a lot of thunderstorms in the area.  At least one of the local stations has its own 24/7 weather station with radar... and it's not post-NBC.  :)

That's sad that a dedicated professional isn't given the respect and appreciation she deserves.

But, unfortunately, it's all about money.  Her employer would rather have less-experienced employees with lower salaries than those with more experience, but who command more money.

I've often thought it would be cool (but likely impossible) to pin down dates of use for things like that.

It shouldn't be so hard.  So long as there's video evidence that can be dated, then it's pretty easy to realize what background was used when.

General Discussion / Re: Amy Winehouse Found Dead at Her Home

I agree with the general consensus here.  I've never heard her songs, but it's sad she died so young.  Unfortunately, she herself is to blame for not getting help to end her destructive lifestyle before it killed her.

Honestly, I think Lindsay Lohan is next.

Probably because it's not so attractive looking on a TV screen.

Does anybody remember "Roundhouse" from when they introduced SNICK back in 1992?  I somehow remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when that show first aired.  :)

As much as I have expressed my dislike for the Weatherstar XL, I do think that its radar (at least the 1st generation) was perhaps the best TWC has used.  I liked the color scheme and it was exceptionally sharp.

P.S.: I'm just waiting for someone to say the 4000 had the best radar.  There's gotta be somebody out there...  :)

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Cindy

In my opinion, it would be beyond confusing, and needlessly so, to have both named and unnamed-but-numbered tropical systems, with both conventions being used simultaneously.  Imagine a category 5 hurricane, strongest ever on record, not being named simply because it's in the middle of the ocean and not impacting land.  Do you want something like that unnamed?  Or would distant tropical storms only be numbered, but an unnamed tropical storm would get a name if it becomes a hurricane, even if it's still in the middle of nowhere?

Too much confusion.

We seem to be naming storms more aggressively now in the past few years alone, so it feels like more names are wasted.

How is that?  When a tropical storm forms, it is assigned a name.  No one controls how many storms form in a season.  In fact, the last time I remember the NHC making the decision to not name a storm was the "Perfect Storm" in 1991 - it was somewhat ambiguous at the time, even though it's seen been declared an unnamed tropical storm in post-season analysis.

IntelliStar 2 Discussion / Re: IntelliStar 2 Beta Launch
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:37:25 PM »
is the IS2 going to have an 8-City current condition page like on the Intellistar?
No.

That doesn't surprise me.  This is just a carryover from the "Latest Observations" page from as far back as the WeatherStar III, as a way to show current conditions throughout the region but before the capability existed for a map.  Honestly, I'm surprised that this product survived as long as it has!

I honestly don't understand what the difference is.  Occasions when the number of storms exceeds the name list are extremely rare.  Besides 2005, if my memory is correct, there was potentially one other year when this would have happened, but there was no name list back then, and this was also the pre-satellite era.

Also, sometimes it's very hard to tell when a storm might actually impact land.  Hurricane Gilbert became a storm long, long before it ever impacted land.  Wouldn't it get extremely confusing if a storm got named only when the first tropical storm watch was issued?

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion

Would anyone want to see the 33% LDL return?

Yes, yes, my goodness, yes!!  It has so much more weather information than the small LDL, and that's especially important now that TWC is scaling back the amount of actual weather programming.

Cindy will be alive for no more than 48 hours before going extratropical.  Unless you're on a ship in the open Atlantic, no one is going to be impacted.  Did this one really need to be upgraded to a tropical storm?  I sense a lot of name-wasting here. <_<

So... a tropical storm should be designated as such, named, and tracked only if it threatens land?  Is that what you're saying?

Why is the SD National LF only showing 3 Day forecasts now?

They're still making changes to it.

I was watching TWC while getting my tooth worked on.

At least you had some pleasure during the pain.  Unless it was Peter Lik or some other longform.  :)

How's your mouth doing now?
