The local media in central Florida is generally sending Emily farther and farther to the east of here.

Odd seeing it during live programming.

That has definitely got to be a mistake.

Something worth noting, as of the 11pm advisory, Emily is stationary.

As I understand it, Emily is in a process of reorganization.  Finding the center of circulation has been hard enough, and it seems as if the system is still working out exactly where it's going to be, especially considering the shear, meaning the circulation, like Don, is probably tilted across levels.

I wish we had a cat 4+ hurricane making US landfall. Even though it'll cause more harm than good, I, for some reason, think the rain from such a system is a much needed relief

It's very possible to get a decent soaking rain with a tropical storm or even a tropical depression.  An area in need of rain doesn't have to get hit by a category 4 hurricane in order to solve the problem.  And the additional effects of a category 4 hurricane - serious wind damage, not to mention the storm surge and vastly increased risk of tornadoes - makes such a scenario FAR more dangerous than need be.

AVNO takes Emily pretty much right past my living room window.

I still would rather see live weather coverage and forecasts. I always still find it to be more entertaining than the long-form shows.

I completely agree!

So basically the transparent logo that was used for Flick & A Forecast is being recycled for longform programming? To be quite honest, I find this pretty awesome. I really like the logo. It looks pretty in HD. <33

And the weather information is... where?

Our director has an objective with his forecasts to beat the NHC in declaring a system a tropical depression or tropical storm or what not. As regular forecasters, we can express our opinions on this call, but rarely can we overturn it. He is the director, after all.

At the risk of insulting your employer, I am going to say that this is just plain stupid.  The NHC alone has the duty and the authority to declare a system tropical.

Does this director really believe that people are going to listen to USA Weather over the National Hurricane Center regarding a tropical system?  Does this director feel that, for the purposes of "beating" the NHC at declaring a system tropical, it is worthwhile to just disregard the established guidelines of what makes a system tropical in the first place?!

Stupid.  :club:

General Discussion / Re: The Debt Ceiling Deadline

As Martin said would happen and I figured as well. A DEAL HAS BEEN REACHED BY BOTH PARTIES.

http://news.yahoo.com/obama-congress-reach-debt-deal-003853348.html

Congress still has to vote on it in both the House and the Senate today into tomorrow.  It'll probably pass, but I don't think it will so easily.

Sadly, there are those in the Tea Party that would prefer to see the U.S. go into default.  I've never been able to figure out their "logic."  I guess they just would rather suffer any consequences rather than compromise.

GFS

Wow... looks like it's gonna miss the US. **fingers crossed**

That is - by far - the most easterly track I've seen predicted for this system.

Tropical Depression 91L

But it's not yet a tropical depression.  It's a tropical wave.
Yeah I know. My Tropical Director said thats what he wants it to be in all of our text products today, and I have to answer to him... So, I have no choice.  :fire:

But that's just wrong.  A tropical depression requires certain accepted conditions, and this tropical wave doesn't yet meet all of these conditions.  If it did, then it would have been designated as a depression by the National Hurricane Center.

Who is the person giving the orders, and what kind of qualifications does he have?!

Local Forecast / Re: Has the L-bar been discontinued?
« on: August 01, 2011, 12:32:19 AM »
Why do some of you think the lbar and forecasting is doomed on TWC? Have you actually been watching TWC lately? A year ago (give or take) when there was long form about the only forecast you got was :38 and :58. There were no Local on the 8s, L-bar or otherwise. Now every 30 minutes there is a live weather update, always a local forecast of some kind on the 8s, more break ins and updates for severe weather events. Yes its not ideal and we know everyone hates longform but TWC has done a much better job focusing back on weather.

Not really.  They're just providing a little more weather information during and around longform.  There's a big difference between that and actually providing more weather information, period (meaning less longform).

I expected that there would be a hurricane striking within the first week I moved to Florida.  Looks like I was just half a month off.  Still, though, a category 1 storm is much better than, say, Charlie, which, even though it made landfall on the west coast of Florida, did quite a lot of severe damage in the Daytona Beach area.

I thought I saw it this evening--if you mean LDL, that is. I'm that's not right, then I don't know what an "L bar" is.

Are you saying TWC is headed to only have local forecasts and that joke of a weather update? I just can't believe that. Maybe it seems that way, but I just don't see that happening.

I saw the L-bar earlier this evening.  That's when the programming is squeezed into a box in the upper-right corner of the screen, with current conditions on the upper-left and more detailed weather information is in the large box taking up most of the rest of the screen.
