Shirley Powell, TWC's executive VP says that they're "going to stick with the formula, 80% live weather coverage, and 20% longform".

Oh freaking great... they're trying to turn things around again.
I sure hope this is what they will do.

The last time a high risk has been issued was during the Yazoo City tornado. I don't remember having a high risk of severe weather in my area ever.
And that was all the way back on April 24th.

Everything Else TWC / Re: TWC Getting Back Into Weather?
« on: October 26, 2010, 06:26:21 PM »
Once upon a time, each cable network had its own distinct identity and its own reason for being.  Roughly 10-15 years ago, they started to slowly meld into a little bit of the same thing on each network, with just a hint of what previously made each network unique.

For example, "Sci Fi" is now "SyFy" to downplay its previous focus on science fiction.  "The Learning Channel" is now "TLC," and its programming is now lacking in anything that could be termed "learning."  "ABC Family" keeps the word "Family" in its name because it is contractually obligated to do so, but that's where anything "Family" begins and ends.  Fox News and MSNBC are no longer news organizations, but "analysis and opinion" networks, although only MSNBC openly states that.  Basically, it's only ESPN that hasn't changed its focus over the decades.
What about CNN?

I HATE NBCU. They want to be dictators. This goes right along with the long-time OCM layoffs. They may eventually do away with weather coverage completely. I don't give a  :censored: about a  :censored: movie.    :furious:

They ought to listen to their viewers. It is not fair to the viewers and weather fans!

OCMs & Personalities / Re: List by seniority

I miss all the ones, who have been let go over the past two years. :( I am just glad we can still watch old videos of them, just like we can watch old videos of the weatherstar III/3000.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: List by seniority

If you're listing in order, Nick Walker should be up under Kim, he's been there since the mid 90's iirc
I think you got that backwards. Kim first appeared around 1995. Nick didn't come around until at least 2000.
Nick was on before 2000. I remember him being on in 1999.

It's cool that TWC is getting back into weather, but they still have a long way to go. They need to get rid of the longform and stop firing the good OCMs.
I agree. I thought they would never be this devoted to weather, again. I, myself, have not watched it much, lately, but I believe what I have read in this thread. There is still definately lots more room for improvement, though.

Yeah, I would say that this year's hurricane season has lived up to it's predictions.

That commercial with the kid singing "The bear comes over the mountain" to the tune of "He's a jolly good fellow". Don't care for that one.

I hate to hear that. That is two people from classic TV shows in less than 3 days.  :(

Back on August 30th, 1987 during TWC's first ever special, "Eye of the Storm", 2 different local forecasts aired near the end of that program. I have footage of both from Birmingham, Alabama and Layne has footage of both from Columbus, Mississippi. I thought it would be neat to look at. Enjoy!

Never heard of her.
I have. Leave It To Beaver is one of my favorite shows. This is so sad.  :( I am also a fan of Andy Griffith and was sad when Don Knotts died.

Programming / Re: Tropical Update maps
« on: October 10, 2010, 11:36:11 PM »
The wind field map was and still is a useful feature. It is simple yet effective. I've provided a comparison of wind field maps from 1989 (Hugo) and the recent Earl hurricane. The color scheme is different though. Another map used in the tropical reports displayed the actual wind gusts (also pictured). It was a good representation of what the top winds were at various locations on a single map covering a broad region during each updated interval. It was kept simple, easy to read and didn't include other info that might have been distracting. Actually many of the maps, etc. used in the earlier days were like that.
It is interesting to see both the differences and the similarities of the graphics of both now and then.
