OCMs & Personalities / Re: Congrats to Jim Cantore
« on: July 14, 2011, 06:36:52 PM »
Congratulations to Jim Cantore for 25 years of service and devotion to The Weather Channel and willingness to report live from weather events, such as hurricanes, snowstorms, tornadoes and other weather phenomena. I've been watching him since 1989. That year, he hosted a special called "Wildfire".

I remember seeing him on, too back around 1998 or so, like Nick said. I knew he was with the radio network. He was on real late at night.

That's very scary!  :fear: At least nobody was hurt. :) BTW, is this the same venue where the recent NBA champions, the Dallas Mavericks play?

General Discussion / Casey Anthony trial and verdict
« on: July 07, 2011, 06:41:54 PM »
I am surprised  :o that nobody has mentioned in a post or opened a thread about the Casey Anthony trial and verdict. What does everyone think about the verdict of her being acquited rather than found guilty of murdering Caylee, her daughter?

It's not thundering at my house and we have not any thunderstorms today. We didn't get any strong winds or heavy rain, either.

Well, it's good to see that she is still doing the weather from time to time, still miss her being on The Weather Channel, though. But, at least she is still in the meteorological field, even though she's a fill-in. Maybe she'll get a promotion in the future.

Great pics.  This whole spring and summer has been nothing, but flooding.
It seems like it's that way every year in the midwest.

I thought you weren't supposed to open up a thread to say that you are leaving.

TWC truly is weather you can always turn to in this 2011 era, just as it was 20 years ago. Weather 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with occasional specials/documentaries.

I am currently out of town and visiting my grandparents in southwest Florida. Zach, I went through (actually bypassed) Tampa on I-75 last Thursday. I like seeing Tampa's skyline in the distance from 75 as you crest the hill toward the Brandon exit, (exit # 257) where the mall is.

Severe Weather / Re: Severe Weather Season 2011/Severe Wx thread

Who perceives it like that? :dunno: Oklahoma and Alabama are in tornado alley, so they may get more than others, but tornadoes can obviously strike in any part of the country. That makes sense.
Alabama is not in "tornado alley" being the region including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri, but we are in what is called "dixie alley", which include Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and portions of the Carolinas.

Also, although tornadoes are very unusual in New England, specifically Massachussetts, they are not unheard of there. On June 9, 1953, an F4 tornado ripped through the Worcester area, leaving 90 people dead. That tornado occurred one day after the infamous Flint, Michigan and Cleveland, Ohio tornadoes, which killed 114 and 8 people respectively.

General Weather Chat / Re: La Nina Bows Out
« on: June 11, 2011, 12:47:55 PM »
I am glad to see La Nina go.  La Nina causes droughts in the south and Florida and hopefully, with it gone, near-normal rainfall will return and with ENSO-neutral during hurricane season, we will get a slow-moving weak tropical storm or depression. Also, it's still early in Florida's rainy season, so that pattern with the sea breezes and daily thunderstorms has plenty of time to set in and hopefully, it will.

Good riddance, La Nina!
