Local Forecast / Severe Weather Alerts
« on: July 31, 2012, 06:22:40 PM »
I'm not sure this qualifies as the Local Forecast on the 8s topic, but I have a question about the severe weather alerts with the red scrolling at the bottom of the screen with alerts from the National Weather Service. Why is it that when you are right in the middle of reading the alert all the sudden, there's a warning update with 4 loud beeps? It happens all the time, even when it is the same warning. Also, more than one time for the same warning, you'll hear Allen Jackson "A whatever (severe thunderstorm, flash flood, tornado, etc.) warning has been issued for your area"?

This seems to happen over and over  and over again during severe weather alerts.

General Discussion / Re: Other TV you watch besides TWC
« on: July 27, 2012, 07:03:39 PM »
I really don't watch much live TV. I watch WBMA ABC 33/40 when they are on giving tornado warning coverage, and they do any time a county in their viewing area is under a tornado warning, and some other local stations when that kind of weather is in progress.

That's our ABC affiliate.

ESPN, ABC, or CBS - whenever my college football team, the Alabama Crimson Tide is playing. That's during the season, of course.

Other than that, I watch my favorite shows on VHS tapes or DVD-Rs that I have converted off of VHS VCR tapes.

Favorite shows:

The Andy Griffith Show

Leave It To Beaver

The Brady Bunch

The Beverly Hillbillies

The Cosby Show

Full House

Sanford and Son

Game Shows (mainly the past more than the present)

Wheel of Fortune

Jeopardy

Family Feud (favorite host was Ray Combs, who commited suicide)

The Price is Right (Bob Barker era)

Any weather documentary that comes on The Discovery Channel or one of their related networks, such as The Learning Channel (TLC).

Fox News, only occasionally - like when there is an election - like this year, but not too often, as I don't want to hear about news that is going on outside the United States.

Send some over here. I'm sick and tired of the boring sunny days here
I know exactly how you feel. When I am getting sick and tired of all the boring dry days, I worry about when thunderstorms are going to come again and it makes me want to know exactly when they will come even more - which is something nobody can tell me. I hate upper level high pressure ridges.

There were no fatalities from tornadoes in 2011. Not in Joplin, Tuscaloosa, or any other location in the USA.

I live in Topeka, KS... I have a crack in my backyard on the outside of my fence that would swallow my yellow labrador. There's massive cracks in the soil everywhere. Nothing is growing. All the grass is wheat colored. I haven't mowed in a month. We barely had any crops this year on our farm just to the north of us. We're being put on voluntary water restrictions and being told that it could go further soon. It's been over 100 degrees for weeks and the entire forecast is nothing but over 100, including 113 Sunday. (One of our local meteorologists said he's been here for 9 years and has never put 100+ on every day for an 8-day forecast since he's been here.) It's mentally and physically exhausting and everyone is starting to get incredibly mad in general due to the heat. It rained the other day for the first time in weeks. It rained .18" and before that we got 1.50" in about half an hour over a 2 mile radius that fell so fast it all ran off. Before that, we haven't had more than a couple hours of rain all spring and summer. There's no chance of rain in the forecast in the next 8 days. I don't think it's being over-hyped when you live in the area it's taking hold, and by the looks and sound of it, it's expanding. Does it compare to the dust bowl days? Not right now, but with the forecast models showing not much, if any, change in the pattern, who knows what it'll be like in a month or two. August is statistically our hottest month. It's not even the end of July yet.
Sounds very bad where you live.

Is it just me, or is TWC really over-hyping the drought in the midwest this year? I don't doubt that it's bad, but they comparing it to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The worst drought I remember in that part of the country was the one in 1988.

Local Forecast / Re: TWC Songs you've heard in other places
« on: July 20, 2012, 06:57:11 PM »
I don't remember any specific songs, but I know I've heard them in other places. When I was young (back during the classic years) I would be in a restraunt and hear certain music, recognixing it and say, "I've heard that music...The Weather Channel."

I actually remember John Tesh from Entertainment Tonight in the mid 90s.
Me, too. He actually was on there in the 80s, too.

He is the artist of my favorite weather channel song of all-time, "A Thousand Summers". That one is on his CD, Tour De France, which is out of print.
