Unless the Atlantic basin has a record-setting September and October, it looks like the predictions for this year were pretty off.  At least the good news is that fewer storms means the likelihood of serious damage is less.
The forecasters were wrong. :) I think people like Jim Cantore (and others like him) are dissapointed about the lack of activity. Of course, there can still be a bad one, like Andrew, but it doesn't look like it right now. Usually, by now were on the "J" or "K" storm, which would be Jerry or Karen. That's about where we'd be right now had the forecasters been correct. And we don't even have to have an el nino pattern to have a relatively quiet season.

General Weather Chat / Summer Heat (Lack of)
« on: July 31, 2013, 02:12:18 PM »
I have not liked the pattern we've been in this summer. It's too cool and unsummer-like. Where I live, we've only had a few days of 90-degree heat all summer. What are your thoughts about this unusual summer weather pattern?

General Weather Chat / Anyone know who Gary England is?
« on: July 25, 2013, 06:25:06 PM »
Does anyone know who Gary England is? Some of us probably do. He is the chief meteorologist for KWTV channel 9, the CBS affiliate in Oklahoma City and has been for many, many years. He has been excellent with his severe weather and tornado coverage for that market, which as we well know, is right in the middle of tornado alley. He had outstanding coverage of the May 3rd, 1999 tornado outbreak and more recently, the outbreaks in May of this year. Anyway, he is stepping down from that position and moving to a new position, which is not meteorology.

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Dorian
« on: July 24, 2013, 06:00:32 PM »
It's way too early to talk about the United States with this system.  The winds are at 50 mph, but Dorian has a difficult environment ahead with cooler sea surface temperatures and increasing wind shear.  I'm more wondering if it will even survive like Chantal as the forward speed of Dorian is too fast at 21 mph.  Let's wait and see if it reaches the Leeward Islands first.
It just came off the coast of Africa, didn't it, like a day or two ago? I think you're right.

12z GFS is VERY excited about Dorian. It keeps it robust it's entire trip through the Atlantic. This run suggests no United States Landfall, but it gets close...

I on the other hand don't share the same enthusiasm the GFS does right now.
Are you saying you want it to affect the U.S. mainland?

Hazardous Weather / Summer Thunderstorms/Lightning
« on: July 20, 2013, 02:20:57 PM »
I thought I'd start a thread, specifically about summer thunderstorms and the dangerous lightning they produce. Florida may be where the most occur, but we all know that this applies to the whole country. Let's talk about lightning injuries and fatalities in this thread. Where I live, lightning start a house fire and the manager of a Staples store was struck back on Wednesday, the 10th.

BTW, does anyone know that all you have to do is turn on a radio to the AM dial and if there's lightning nearby, you can hear the sound on the radio?

Jennifer Lopez is fantastic.  Glad to see her back.  Pleasant surprise turning on TWC to see Vivian Brown and her on "Day Planner."
I know it. Jennifer said she was filling in for Nick Walker.

Programming and Graphics / Re: Wake Up With Al
« on: July 16, 2013, 06:18:31 PM »
I never watch Wake Up With Al. The show seems only partially devoted to weather and they beat around the bush and just keep rambling before giving me (if they do) the information I am looking for.  I do not tune in when it is on. Wake Up With Al seems so goofy.

General Weather Chat / Storms of the 21st Century
« on: July 06, 2013, 06:55:20 PM »
As many (or at least, some) may remember, at the end of 1999, The Weather Channel had people voting for the top storms of the 20th century. The Superstorm of 1993, the April 3-4, 1974 super tornado outbreak, and the Galveston, Texas 1900 hurricane were some that made the top 5.

Although we are only 14 years into this century, what storms would be your pick as to the top 5 storms of this century, 2000-present? Here are some of my examples to choose from and it doesn't have to be on this list here to be picked for your top 5, but these are the options and remind me if I forget any:

Hurricane Katrina 2005

Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy 2012

Super tornado outbreak April 25-28, 2011

Camilla, Georgia tornado February 14, 2000

Presidents' Day blizzard February 16-17, 2003

Hurricane Charley, August 13th, 2004, Southwestern Florida

Veterans Day tornado outbreak, November 10-11, 2002

Ft. Worth, Texas tornado - March 2000

Kansas City, MO area and many other locations from OK to AL tornado outbreak, May 4-10, 2003

Hurricane Ivan, September 16th, 2004, Alabama, Florida panhandle

Greensburg, Kansas EF5 tornado May 4th, 2007

Super Tuesday Tornado Outbreak, February 5th-6th, 2008

Joplin, Missouri EF5 tornado, May 2011

Groundhog Day blizzard, February 1-3, 2011

Southern Winter Storm, January 9-10, 2011
