Hurricane Central / Arizona Flooding from Hurricane Odile

Just a quick note to all the residents, chasers and spotters out there to be very careful as possible "historical" flooding hits Arizona, resulting from Hurricane Odile's remnants.

I've lived and chased here for over 25 years and have seen what flash flooding can do in an area that is normally bone dry. River beds, roadways and streams can quickly become dangerous fast-moving rivers of debris-laden water.

Pay close attention to The Weather Channel, National Weather Service Radio and reliable local news reports, especially before any travel.

General Weather Chat / WeatherNation's Coverage During 2/20/2014 Severe Event

Now I really miss TWC's coverage of severe weather today, given this is the first time WN has covered a severe event this year and the coverage is somewhat lacking. I wanted to see how they did, now we know. Yikes!

Kind of weird to see storm chaser Reed Timmer on WN giving live reports. I thought he would stay loyal to TWC during the blackout given the time they devoted to promoting him last year.

Latest from the BBC:

"Tacloban is totally destroyed. Some people are losing their minds from hunger or from losing their families," high school teacher Andrew Pomeda told AFP news agency.

"People are becoming violent. They are looting business establishments, the malls, just to find food, rice and milk... I am afraid that in one week, people will be killing from hunger."

The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports that the scene in Tacloban is one of utter devastation.

Our correspondent says hundreds of people are at the airport, itself badly damaged, trying to get on a flight out of the city.

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Karen

Good coverage by TWC on Karen.

Have not pulled the plug on chasing Karen yet.

Have to make decision soon. I think there may be some rapid development, as convection is starting to explode near the circulation center, but likely not enough time for it to become a major hurricane or produce a serious storm surge. Then again, remember Hurricane Charlie?

Surprised there is not more chatter about Invest 97L.

This system is looking more impressive with every new satellite image -- although somewhat expansive. Latest HWRF looks impressive -- some runs hinting of hurricane strength after 48 hours. Models are also beginning to forecast tracking, although the GFS has not picked up on the system yet. (The forecast path means nothing now).

Meanwhile, I guess it's the same old story for now, the "2013 Saharan dustbowl" and 10-20 knots shear + tradewinds to deal with over the next 48 hours. If 97L can stay intact, I'm thinking Wednesday or Thursday will be interesting and I might just have to start organizing gear.

Hi everyone, Warren Faidley here.

A lot of you likely do not remember me, but TWC published my book and video "Storm Chaser" back in the mid-1990's.

I still chase, but my focus now days is storm safety, applying all the things I've learned (and still learning) to good use.

I look forward to joining the group.

It will be interesting to see when the Atlantic conditions improve this year.
