Everything Else TWC / Breaking News: Time Warner Drops TWC Bid

Time Warner Withdrawals bid for The Weather Channel
http://tvdecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/13/time-warner-withdraws-bid-for-weather-channel/

A group led by NBC Universal now appears likely to acquire The Weather Channel, after Time Warner Inc. withdrew its bid for the channel on Friday.

Time Warner, which owns CNN and other news and information outlets, stepped away from the bidding due to price, according to an executive close to the transaction who refused to be identified because they were not authorized to speak about the negotiations. Bids were due Friday at noon, according to Reuters, which first reported Time Warner’s decision.

NBC Universal and two private equity firms, the Blackstone Group and Bain Capital, had submitted a bid of about $3.5 billion including debt, The New York Times reported on May 31.

Last week John Martin, the chief financial officer of Time Warner, said that a combination of CNN and The Weather Channel would give the company “a very, very interesting cross-platform play.” In conversations with Wall Street analysts, he has emphasized the need for “price discipline” in the bidding. Time Warner was said to be especially interested in Weather.com and the channel’s production facilities near Atlanta.

The Weather Channel, one of the premiere cable channel brands, is owned by Landmark Communications.

NBC could merge The Weather Channel with its upstart weather venture, NBC Weather Plus, and share some news resources with the channel.

The Weather Channel is the leading brand of weather information on television, reaching 95 million households and averaging an audience of 234,000 households at any given time. NBC Weather Plus is a name for a number of services, including a 24-hour network sponsored by local stations, a Web site, and short weather updates for NBC’s cable channels. Weather Plus has not yet turned a profit and is perceived as faltering.

Pittsburgh ranks first for relocating families
Pittsburgh Business Times - by Tim Schooley
http://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/stor...ml?ana=from_rss

It would be logical that if Pittsburgh ranks as America's most livable city then it should be among the best cities to relocate families to as well.

That's Pittsburgh's newest PR trophy, achieving the number one ranking of the "Best Cities for Relocating Families" among large metropolitan areas in the United States.

San Antonio-based Worldwide ERC, a relocation services industry trade group, in conjunction with Primacy Relocation, an international relocation firm, announced their list today, working with Bert Sperling of Sperling's BestPlaces to rate cities based on a variety of criteria.

Pittsburgh beat out Indianapolis, the second-ranked big city, and three Texas metros, Austin, Forth Worth and San Antonio, to take the top spot.

According to a prepared statement announcing the ranking, the 2008 study placed a special emphasis on both the housing market and economy, both of which impact relocation plans and an employer's ability to transfer employees.

Other criteria new to this year's ranking include recent job growth for 2007, percentage of nearby top-ranked colleges, average in-state tuition for four-year public colleges, percentage of population growth since 2000, amount of pediatricians per 100,000 population, and separate sales and income tax categories.

The ranking also includes a green living index, measuring environmental incentives and policies.

"Quality of life issues are increasingly important to transferees, and the employers who move them are recognizing those requirements," Cris Collie, CEO of Worldwide ERC, said in the statement. "Being able to meet the needs of the entire family will be increasingly critical as the labor market grows tighter."

Last April, Pittsburgh was named America's most livable city by the Places Rated Almanac for the first time since 1985.

TWC and your Cable Company / I'm Now Officially a FiOS TV Customer!
« on: February 15, 2008, 11:30:06 PM »
Yes... and I LOVE it. We're saving upwards of $50/month over Comcast... the boxes run so much smoother, faster, and the DVR is MUCH quieter. Also, I really like the interactive guide. It, as well as the channel #s, will take getting used to, but overall, it was an excellent idea to switch.

The install took about 2.5 hours, not bad. We had 3 boxes installed, 1 of which is a DVR. With Comcast, we had 1 DVR and 1 normal STB.. however with FiOS, all TVs must have a box. But, we're saving a lot of money, so that really doesn't matter.

Any other FiOS customers here have good (or bad) stories to share?

Well, you all have seen my recent HD Star design, but one goes WAY beyond that. I'm even animating it in After Effects. Now, it's in it's infant stages, but I want to share it with you to get some feedback. What do you think... of the title banner; the LDL; the sidebar; animations; etc? Let me know. Thanks, and enjoy!
