General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch

Thanks everyone for your condolences and well wishes. They are most appreciated and helped a lot!! :) I was out of town for the past couple days wrapping up some affairs but I hope to have a nice relaxing rest of the summer. Bring on the heat :P

Sorry to hear about your loss, Martin.  I sure hope things get better for you and your family as the last several years have been really rough for you. :(
Thanks Patrick! I'm sure things will quiet down a little :)

I'm sorry for your loss Martin :( I lost my grandmother when she was 98 2 years ago and it was tough for the  last few weeks following her death. At least we can cherish the good moments in her life
I'm so sorry to hear that. I agree completely
Sad to hear that, Martin :( My grandmother is currently battling breast cancer right now. She goes into surgery tomorrow I believe. So I can feel your pain (to some extent. As heart breaking as cancer is, I can't imagine how it would feel to have someone pass on). I wish you the best, Martin!
Wow I hope she is recovering well. Fighting a battle like that is no small feat. Good luck to her and your family!

Everything Else TWC / Re: Nicole Mitchell sues The Weather Channel

Nicole on The O'Reilly Factor

Interesting how he described The Weather Channel as "a service. And that "people tune in and out" for the weather. It would seem the new owners want TWC to be the opposite of that

According to Mike Bettes' Facebook, he is back in Atlanta. He will probaly host YWT from Atlanta. We don't know when Stephanie is going back to Atlanta.
Hmm this was interesting to hear. I am curious if they will keep the two apart

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Re: No LOT8's near Lex, KY

Note to moderators: I know I've been told not to reply to threads in the Tech Support area, but I thought this may be an exception. Sorry if I caused any issues!

I certainly hope an exception will be made in this case, because your description of the situation is excellent.
Thanks Trevor! I appreciate you helping this new member out :)

Sorry for my absence folks. When I arrived back from Europe my grandmother became critically ill. She passed away yesterday and I have been getting her estate in order. She lived to be 98 which is amazing but I wish her last few days had not been as painful and unpleasant as they were. While her body was quite active she was unconscious for much of the time so I hope the discomfort was minimal. This makes me the last remaining Cornick which is a bit of a bummer to think about. :(

I get the feeling he'll really enjoy the NHC director job much better than being on TWC.  It seemed like he was always nervous in front of live camera, so this move may be a good thing for him.

As director of the NHC he will still be making the rounds soing media interviews and such during major huricanes that threaten the U.S. mainland so he will not be completely off of TV.
Correct they have a studio/press room there at the NHC where they do live feeds and interviews to various media outlets

I wish Nicole the best of luck with her case. Its pointless to even mention any of the other OCMs in this topic. This situation is completely different than any other OCMs who were let go.

Also (I may sound stupid here), but what is Nicole looking for as a result of this case if she wins?  One of the guys in the video kept saying he wanted TWC to "do the right thing" but didn't specify exactly what that was.  Does Nicole want more money?  Does she want TWC to cancel the Hurricane Hunters series, or re-edit it with her included (I don't think this will be easy)?  Or does she just want the public to be aware of the issue so that TWC can issue a public apology and treat those in the service with more respect in the future?
TWC would never issue a public apology or put her back in the series. They are just as likely to rehire her or any other OCMs. No company is going to publicly admit they were wrong in a situation like this. The best Nicole can hope for is to get the non compete clause abolished and perhaps some sort of payout.

TWC Today News / Re: New Global Moderator!
« on: June 01, 2012, 12:08:31 PM »
No offense, but is this really needed? :dunno:
As I have had less and less time to monitor things I wanted someone more active to be added to the position. I have been concerned recently by some of the topics that have gotten out of hand and firmly believe an increased moderater presence, especially by an individual known and trusted by other members, will help.

I am proud to promote Andy (aka WeatherWitness) to the Global Moderator position here at the forums. Andy has clearly demonstrated many key aspects of a moderator and I know he will do an awesome job!

Recently, there has been a lot of talk in The Front Porch about where you have traveled to, so I decided that a new thread would be fitting. Use this link to create your own map.
I'll soon be traveling through Virginia to get to Washington, DC for a school trip this October.

Cool idea!

Beryl has completed her transition to a tropical storm, winds are up to 65mph also. (She's getting stronger than I anticipated.)

EDIT: I don't think a brief brush at 75mph Cat 1 hurricane intensity is out of the question now.

...BERYL STRONGER...NOW A TROPICAL STORM...
2:00 PM EDT Sun May 27
Location: 30.1°N 79.9°W
Max sustained: 65 mph
Moving: W at 10 mph
Min pressure: 997 mb
Those winds were found on the left side of the storm in a thunderstorm squall that looks to have weakened a little on radar. The NE side of the storm is less impressive. I don't see any chance of hurricane force winds personally
