Poll: Flat Basemaps or Rounded Basemaps?
« on: July 10, 2010, 11:18:11 AM »
I thought I would start a topic about this, because I was curious.

Do you prefer the "flat" basemaps (as seen on the Emergency Satellite Forecast) or the rounded basemaps (as seen on the Regular Satellite Forecast)?

I chose the Flat Basemaps, because they actually shows the Northwest AND the Southwest, instead of just the West.

I agree, the rounded basemapas show a little too much for one reason.

Flat ones as well. They added some variety to the radar maps on the LFs back then.

Flat. Round ones make it harder to see things.

Those flat ones used to be on the :08/:38 flavors up until July 2008, but remained on the Trammell feed. Flat without a doubt for me.

Just an FYI, the "flat" and "rounded" base maps are actually types of cylindrical and conical map projections, respectively.

And maps are never perfectly shaped, only globes are. :P

For a LF, I agree with the flat (cylindrical projection) map to zoom in on an area and keep everything straight.  I do think the rounded (conic projection) map looks more accurate though compared to a globe, which is what I'd use in scientific presentations.
