A tornado emergency is in effect for counties in Northern Mississippi:

Yazoo City reporting heavy thunderstorm and 20 mph wind gusts

Forecast: Windy with strong thunderstorms likely. Storms could contain tornadoes. High around 80F. Winds SSW at 20 to 30 mph.

 ... THIS IS A TORNADO EMERGENCY FOR THE WARNED AREA... 

   AT 1240 PM CDT... NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS AND STORM   SPOTTERS WERE TRACKING A LARGE AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TORNADO THAT  HAS  CREATED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AND INJURIES. THIS TORNADO WAS LOCATED  NEAR  EBENEZER MOVING NORTHEAST AT 55 MPH.
 THE  TORNADO WILL BE  NEAR... FRANKLIN... GOODMAN AND LEXINGTON BY 1245 PM  CDT... NEAR  INTERSTATE 55 EXIT 150 BY 1247 PM CDT... DURANT... MCMILLAN  AND  BOWLING GREEN BY 1250 PM CDT... SALLIS BY 1255 PM CDT... POSSUMNECK   AND WEST BY 100 PM CDT...

 PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... 

   A TORNADO WARNING MEANS THAT A TORNADO IS OCCURRING OR IMMINENT. YOU   SHOULD ACTIVATE YOUR TORNADO ACTION PLAN AND TAKE PROTECTIVE ACTION   NOW.

 THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND  LIFE THREATENING  SITUATION. THIS STORM IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING STRONG  TO VIOLENT  TORNADOES. IF YOU ARE IN THE PATH OF THIS TORNADO... TAKE  COVER  IMMEDIATELY!

 A TORNADO WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 800 PM CDT SATURDAY EVENING FOR MISSISSIPPI.

I hope all residents in that area heeded the warning and took shelter before that tornado hit, It's already being estimated to be an EF4 as wide as 1 mile. I'm been given a saving grace, There are no tornado Watches issued for my area or my state for that matter yet....

Yazoo City, Mississippi was hit very hard. 4 fatalities there.  :( Has the tornado damage there been given an EF-Scale rating, yet?

EF3 I believe with a 1.5 mile wide path!

The Yazoo City, MS tornado is given at least a preliminary EF3 rating with winds of 160 mph, but a NWS damage survey team will be investigating the destruction soon to determine if that initial rating may actually be raised to an EF4.

Here's an update on the Yazoo City, MS tornado:  The NWS in Jackson, MS did a preliminary damage survey, and they found that this tornado did cause EF4 damage.  The estimated maximum winds were bumped up to 170 mph, and the maximum path width was estimated to be 1.75 miles at one point.  More investigations will be done to determine if this information needs to be adjusted and if it was indeed a single long-track tornado that trekked 149 miles, which is an incredibly long distance for a tornado to travel while staying on the ground!

The parent supercell that spawned the 149-mile EF4 also spawned two more tornadoes with much shorter tracks: one northwest of Starkville, Miss. and another near West Point, Miss.
