I was not totally sure, but I believe this is the most appropriate spot for me to quickly give my thoughts of my first impression of The Weather Channel HD...

Just got it this morning as TWC HD was among 15 new HD channels added to my Cablevision lineup, bringing the HD total to 60. Now I can finally stop complaining my cable provider had failed to add this vital channel.

I was more than impressed with the picture quality. What a difference! I got up briefly at 4:00 AM to check out First Outlook as Kevin Robinson and the beautiful Jen Carfagno hosted the show.

Let me say this first. If your carrier provides TWC HD, then you must go get a HDTV. It's worth it. Besides the very sharp and much clearer picture which makes the new HD studio look even more impressive, the graphics from the projection wall jump at you. As I expected, those small labels in black font on the banner are clear to read now as opposed to it being harder to do so on the SD feed (and I have 20/20 vision, so my own eyesight isn't the problem).

The one map that must be adjusted is the temperature forecast map. It's the one where you see the labels for 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 100s, etc. The map banner is cut off at the top when it is shown on full screen instead of from the projection wall with an OCM in front of it.

Let's say that the HD shows are so tailored to just that, the HD feed. Bright vivid color and the OCMs look even better in HD.

Now I cannot wait to see the other shows such as Evening Edition. I didn't have time to put on Your Weather Today this morning, but I hope to tomorrow.

By the way, no HD STAR for my system yet.  All I have on is the satellite feed during the Local on the 8s segment. So I'll be switching to the SD during those times.

Just popped into my head. The Mike Seidel/Kristina Abernathy pairing that we say yesterday on Day Planner/Weather Center might have to do with the fact that Nick and Vivian were rehearsing in the HD studio. We might see Day Planner or Weather Center go HD next week.
Well, there goes my idea down the drain. Nick and Vivian are back on DP/WC today.

Well, they probably already rehearsed a little bit in June for that one-time PME stint on the 4th of July, so perhaps they only needed a little more practice yesterday.

Finally, they get rid of the horrible temperature weekly planner temperature maps where you couldn't differentiate between temperatures. We now have something similar to what we had before the relaunch, albeit a lot more detailed.

Anyone know what the point of the Forecast Logo is on select map titlebars, like this compared to average map?

You know, I was wondering the same thing this morning.  I see absolutely no point in it..

Trying to convey a message about temperatures being higher than average because of global warming? <_<

I saw Abrams and Bettes on an actual HDTV, and it was AMAZING!  Everything is SO clear.  I loved it! :D :twothumbs:

We just had a surprise HD launch of Weekend Now this morning; luckily I was watching the end of WV to hear the announcement and start the recorder. Kevin and Dave are hosting (I'm surprised Dave is already trained for HD), and like Dave said to start the show, "Be one of the cool kids and watch Weekend Now in HD".

It looks like they might be using the A&B desk for WN.

The cameras for the video wall needs to be zoomed in a little. Right now on the standard feed it's too far zoomed out that you can see white on the bottom (which I'm assuming is the frame of the video wall).

At the end of the lifestyles segment at :14 past, they used a Weekend Now full screen graphic to go to break, but of course, it wasn't SD friendly, it read "WeekendNO" on my TV. :P

Also, it appears WN has changed it's segment openers.

Meh, the segment openers are okay. I really liked the older ones though. The text in the new openers are too big.

Bigger TV text is the "thing" in broadcasting these days.

Yeah, its the other way around, its smaller text with larger screens.

That's what I thought. Most other TV stations I've seen make their text smaller when they transition to HD.
