The Weather Channel adds a movie night
« on: October 20, 2009, 03:44:43 PM »
There was an article on Yahoo that the Weather Channel will start showing movies. So we have the WC Today show in the morning, now movies, what's next Donnie and Marie or maybe Jay Leno joking about the weather?

I think it will be interesting to see the viewer's response to Friday night movie night.  I am not really excited for the idea, but it is definitely something different.  I am not really going to complain that much, because I do not watch TWC on Friday nights, so it really does not concern me.

What is a good idea, however, is Jen Carfagno hosting and giving commentary.

It's not a bad idea, but I don't have much faith in it lasting very long. :itsok:

I saw this coming a long time ago actually. Ratings on Friday nights are very poor (not a surprise).

Thought this was just a joke in the Onion, but it's on the TWC online press room with The Weather Channel Adds Feature Films to Network Schedule. Starting Fri, Oct 31, with The Perfect Storm and continuing weekly with March of the Penguins,Misery, and Deep Blue Sea. I don't like the continued erosion of weather coverage, but it might make a good diversion.

AFAIK, nothing is done by Master Control these days. It's probably an inexperienced person using OverDrive in one of the small control rooms

Great, so they are now trying to do fewer weather coverage.   This is just like what happened to Cartoon Network since 2005.

According to my guide, back to back episodes of Surviving the Elements will air from 1-4 AM on Saturday the 31st.

Isn't the overnight Weather Center and early Weekend View (4:30-7) mastered?

I'm not sure why you need full movies on Friday nights with boring weather when you have truckloads of long-form programming that you could toss in there.  They could show special marathons of certain reruns to create a theme and promote it.  Regardless, if the movie nights somehow become successful, they need to show "Twister" and "Day After Tomorrow" soon so that Jen can have fun commenting on them. :P  I'm surprised those two movies didn't make the first four!

Cartoon Network used to cover weather!? :P

For The Weather Channel, the risk lies in alienating its regular weather-obsessed viewers, who tune in for news of high-pressure systems rather than high drama.
LOL. You alienated your real viewers a LONG time ago! But hey, if the Travel Channel is showing movies instead of educating its viewers, might as well follow their lead.
