General Discussion / Dish Network: I *may* get it...
« on: August 16, 2010, 02:19:54 AM »
So, today, my parents were "in the talks" of switching satellite providers. Switching... as in switching from DirecTV to Dish Network. I'm very mixed about it. But it could give our budget a break.

I'll be a bit explicit here. I pay more than $200 a month for satellite TV. We don't have HBO/Showtime/Starz, nor we signed up for any event. (Heck, we don't even do Pay Per View ). My dad has his stupid Sports Pack which is pointless to watch sometimes, and my mom has the 400's (the exclusive Spanish channels). We don't have HD either. Me? I only care for the following: TWC, ESPN, CurrentTV, the music channels, and Food Network. :P

It could be good for me, because it's my chance to get TWC in HD. Two of the house's TV's can do HD.

My questions are: How is Dish Network (in terms of service, and in general)? Are the HD channels good? What about the DVRs? Is the price for the basic package worth it? I'm also looking for opinions from some of you guys since I know plenty of you have Dish.

I could get it by the end of next month. (Maaaaaybe. :P)

Programming and Graphics / Lightning Rod--CANCELLED
« on: May 27, 2010, 12:25:16 PM »
I'll go ahead and start a new thread on what may be a very interesting show!

LIGHTNING ROD, hosted by former TWC radio meteorologist Mark Elliot is basically a show that all about the weather and how it affects your area. It's a fast-paced show. You can interact and discuss with Mark using Facebook, Twitter, skype, etc.

Via Mark's Twitter (@MarkElliotTWC), the show will debut this June, but did not say the exact date yet. But it will air Monday-Thursday 10-11 pm ET.

The show now has a twitter, (@TWCLightningRod) and he may be working on a facebook. I'll ask him when I get a chance.

btw.. <333 the logo of it!!!

So, upon coming back from class, I get news that the NWS bans twitter? It looks like the news is still unconfirmed, because googling only took me to this article that has been retweeted several times.

http://knowthenetwork.com/blog/2010/05/natl-weather-service-bans-social-media/

I'm not really liking the idea, to be honest. When some people are under a severe weather watch or warning, they need a faster way to get in the know. And Twitter makes it simpler (I sound like an ad here. >_>). There are times that they dont have the time to go to the actual NWS site and look at the advisories.

I'd like to hear what everyone else has to say about this.  as for now, I stand by my opinion.

EDIT: Looks like they only banned "personal" accounts and "bots", and they're probably gonna work it out with an agreement. (scroll down for the confirmation.)

Programming and Graphics / TWC Unveils New Shows For 2010-2011 Season
« on: April 12, 2010, 02:54:08 PM »
http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/04/12/the-weather-channel-unveils-new-shows-for-2010-2011-season/48011

Via Mark Elliot (@MarkElliotTWC), TWC will debut three new shows for the 2010-2011 season. One of them, "Lightning Rod", is his very own show that he's been working on since the beginning of the year. I do look forward to his show, as it's TWC's very first live interaction show (you get to discuss and interact with Mark via facebook, twitter, skype, etc)

Other shows that will debut later on this year:
"Forensic Weather" (how weather affects forensics, solving crimes, etc)
"Weather: Caught On Camera" (hosted by Mike Bettes)

"WeatherProof" and "Cantore Stories" will also be part of the new 2010-2011 season.

TWC New Your Weather Today Opener

(video courtesy of Mike M)

On Monday, April 5th, Your Weather Today debuted a new opener and some new graphics. They don't really give the morning feel, to be honest. At least the Steph/Mike pair is still there.

I like the new graphics, but not the music.

For those with XP and want to upgrade to that browser (which will be available soon), you might want to consider upgrading your Windows. It will NOT SUPPORT Windows XP.

Meh, I'm sticking with SeaMonkey.

Looks like TWC is bringing back movies again. A 1997 TV movie Into Thin Air: Deaths on Everest will be on TWC Friday March 26, 2010.

I think this is worth watching. I actually have the book, and haven't seen the TV adaptation.
