Title: IS LDL
Post by: TWCDude on May 29, 2008, 09:45:50 PM
Today on TWC, I noticed a new LDL for the IntelliStar. That LDL is a steap foreward for The Weather Channel into high defination. :) If you have any comments about the new LDL, post it here.

Do you have a beta testing STAR?

Since the LDL has been introduced in Pittsburgh and Atlanta as beta, I can now reveal a bit if info.

As previously mentioned, its being tested on select Pittsburgh and Atlanta systems, and it's a totally new LDL. It was originally scheduled to go out overnight Monday/early Tuesday AM, but was pushed back due to technical difficulties (unknown to me at this time). It was pushed through successfully early this morning.

About the LDL... it's totally different, in a good way (unless you're expecting another XL-esque transparent LDL). It's blue, and will match the new TWC-HD style. There is no set launch date yet, and I highly doubt it will launch June 2.

Three other HUGE changes to this LDL are:
1) Interstate font goes bye-bye, to match the HD look I assume.
2) The LDL will have the capability to show conditions for 3 cities with larges DMAs/viewership areas.
3) Traffic incidents will now be shown on the LDL. I'm pretty sure the whole incident doesn't show, but rather an abbreviated version (Ie: Incident, I-376 Pkwy East at Blvd of the Allies [what shows on the heading line of the incidents page]).

No, there is no other graphic update to the domestic IS.

The only other change with this release is a bug fix for the wx bulletins screen, where occasionally, the old screen would briefly show before the new one.

Yes the warning bars have changed too, but I have no previews of them, and like I said, have yet to see the LDL in action. So I have no idea what they look like, but I'd imagine they're very similar.

For TWCClassics members... remember when I asked you to vote (http://www.twcclassics.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8811) on whether or not you wanted more watches shown on the LDL, as Tornado and Severe Tstm Watches already do? This is why... this LDL has the capability to show more watches. The specifics are currently unknown, except Flood/Flash Flood watches will be shown. Others may come in the future.

I have not seen this in person yet, as I'm not home, and won't be til late tomorrow night. I'll *try* to get a pic or two then, unless megamanfan  can get them now? Until that point, here are the original mock ups straight out of the TWC Creative Dept. Enjoy. :)

Sorry I didn't get to vote, Tyler. Thanks very much for sharing your mock-ups!  Wow, those are great upgrades! Cannot wait to see it for real in the future.

That LDL reminds me a bit of ESPN's Bottom Line with the way they have the league ID tabs atop the LDL display when showing the news items and scores.

Hmmm, the Interstate font is on its way out, huh?  But I thought I saw it on the TWC HD satellite LDL, only it's skinnier to match what font is on the IntelliSTAR 36-hour forecast body text.  I hope that's what we end up seeing, but your font there is definitely nice, too.

I've seen it first hand, only on the LF right now, as it's not showing during national programming for some reason (megamanfan, have you seen it during national?). Here are my initial observations (it's slightly different than the TWCT pics I posted):

1) There is animation, which I like. The LDL animated in... the tabs animate, and glow when the tab which is meant to be in focus moves left.
2) The Local Ad Crawl is nicer, with smaller font, and, surprisingly, I really like how it looks. I hope the watch/warn/advisory crawls aver very similar.
3) The time AND temp are now shown on the bar at the same time.
4) The data animates downwards, like the Satellite HD LDL.
5) It seems the monthly precip isn't showing during the LF for some reason. That's a bug I'll have to report.
6) The icons really need to be larger.
7) The pressure indicator has been fixed! No more tiny arrows you can't see.

And, as stated, it doesn't match the current LF look that well, but, it's a GREAT improvement, IMO.

Title: Re: IS LDL
Post by: Tyler on May 31, 2008, 08:45:06 AM
In answer to your question, no, the icons don't animate.

I'm seeing the LDL live this morning with new stuff:

1) The almanac data on the LDL has been expanded away from just sunrise/sunset data, to now include monthly precip average and avg high temp for the day.
2) The LDL has a 3 day forecast on  it. This may just be a AM feature, though.
3) I'm not seeing Air Quality or UV Outlooks, so I'll report it as a bug.
4) Today's Forecast shows words instead of an icon, which is nice: "SCT'D T'STROMS, A FEW STORMS MAY BE SEVERE. HIGH 76." This also may be just a morning feature.

Seeing a tornado watch now on the LDL now... I like how it's tabbed in there with the other forecast data.
Title: Re: IS LDL
Post by: Tyler on May 31, 2008, 08:49:19 AM
Update: I'm seeing several counties are missing from the tornado watch on the LDL. This also appears to be a bug. Westmoreland, Greene, and Indiana counties are all missing.

Other things I've noticed through the day:

1) The date is no longer displayed. I will have them note that I, for one, found it useful. Not sure if the removal of the date was intentional or not.
2) Air Quality and the UV Index are only displayed every few rotations. This needs to be looked at.
3) Incidents aren't displaying, even though they are supposed to.
4) Travel Cities, Airport Delays, and the 3 Day forecast are now shown all day, which I don't mind.

1) Interstate font goes bye-bye, to match the HD look I assume.

Don't jump right on that...I have seen my new LDL and my neighbors LDL. He has Comcast, I have Verizon. SOME not all of the temperatures are still in interstate font. It might be intentional, it might not. Either way I am going to note that to them.

Another note. The Local Ad Crawl shows beautifully, but the tab of what it is has no title, again might be intentional but I'm still going to note it to them.

Funny, I didn't notice but this is my first post.

EDIT: A new note, the wind direction and speed on the LDL is also in Interstate.

I love it, and I am really glad that it is not too complex.  It's funny, because they use a similar one on one of my local news stations, so I am used to the tabs on it.  But, I like it, because you can now know what your going to see next, I guess.

I am interested to see what it will look like for watches and warnings..

Yea, my guess is that the wonderful workers at my headend are either...

A ) playing World of Warcraft
B ) taking their sweet little time upgrading their IS software
C ) just not doing anything at all
D ) doing something special with the STAR system, or
E ) installing an HD STAR system

The options are ranked in order from most likely to least likely.

I'm just going to guess that my IS is having problems, because there is still no sign of anything and it's been this way all day.  I think that it's just a problem that is yet to be resolved.
Are you subscribed to Verizon FiOS TV? Because it's gonna be a few months before the new changes take effect, like what they did with the recent IntelliStar updates and the weather icons.

No, the FiOS stuff has been worked out. All/most future updates should go out with all the other stars.

Okay, sorry I haven't replied.  I just woke up and checked TWC now and my IS has been upgraded.  I was just surprised to see that it took so long, while others seemed to get theirs yesterday morning.

Late today the size of the text for the LAS and traffic crawls was increased, as well as the speed decreased.

Just so you know, your headend has nothing to do with this upgrade, it is all done by TWC and sent out to every IS via Network Control.

The watch/warning/advisory ticker is still the version from the old LDL, as some of you have noticed.

I can confirm this with my cable company's IntelliStar (ID 22689).

They may or may not change it. They did not change the WeatherStar XL's watch/warning ticker.

In case anyone is wondering, here is how Tornado Watches look on the LDL:

This was after the old red crawl ran for ten minutes.

Worth noting, if a Severe T'Storm Watch is issued, the icon on the LDL tab is a small thunderbolt.

I haven't seen that yet. All I've seen is a continuous orange scroll telling me there's a T'Storm Watch.

You'll see what Billy posted after a while.

Also, looking at the pic, there is a small issue - the "ET" text is right next to the "weather.com" text on the logo.

The new LDL would have matched the IntelliStar much better if the text on the LF were to stay blue.

Dish has a different IS than DirecTV. It's possible they forget to update Dish's STAR, or Dish's STAR is going to receive a different update.

Is it just me, or has the temperature on the new LDL been updated? It looks a bit bigger than it used to look.

It is indeed bigger, and appears really blurry on my tuner.

Yes, it is now bigger, and I also think it's blurrier.
