The Olympics Hit London - 2012

I almost considered putting this in the Sports Thread, but the Olympics are special enough that I feel it deserves its own thread. I will personally be watching the Olympics non-stop the next several days, and this thread is for those of you who wish to discuss anything about it - the opening ceremonies, memorable events, etc.

302 events, 144 countries. And I've only got one thing to say: GO TEAM USA! :biggrin:

Beside TWC, the olympics were the only other program I watched in summer of 2008. Looking forward to For Fridays ceremonies

Call me crazy, but I set up another pair of speakers earlier this evening to watch the Olympic Games on (4-channel setup FTW).. will be watching as much as possible with my TV tuner

Like Mike, I'm not really hung up on the Summer/Winter Olympics. I look at some events though.

I think the only time I've ever watched the Olympics was 1996. And that was somewhat against my will. We were renting a cabin in Minnesota and my sister insisted on watching the gymnastics competitions. I remember us laughing at the commentators.

I like watching the opening ceremonies and the commercials. IMO, the commercials are just as unique as the Super Bowl commercials. It's great to watch everyone from all over the world competing and showing off the best of their skills.

In my personal opinion, NBC destroyed the opening ceremony, with unnecessary commentary, Matt Lauer and Bob Costas not shutting up, and the ads every 5-10 minutes. They managed to span a three hour ceremony in to almost 5 hours of bullshit. I'm sorry. It's really sad that NBC has reached deals to carry the Winter and Summer Olympics through 2020... Again, just my personal opinion, not the opinion of the TWC Today/TWC Classics Forums or its administration, unless noted in replies.

At the end of Day 3, the medal count is 17 apiece for China and the United States. China leads in gold medal count, with 9 to their name. The U.S. is second with 5.

Notable news is that the French swimming team in the 4x100m relay narrowly beat out the United States for gold in that event, after the U.S narrowly beat them in Beijing back in 2008.

Just an FYI, but if your cable provider (both satellite providers carry it) carries the NBC Sports channel, the Olympics are live there! :thumbsup:

Comcast also provides it on most packages, as they are actually the owners of NBC. :(

Does anyone else think this year's Olympic coverage absolutely SUCKS? <_<  Way too many commercials and background story crap in my opinion.  (Is it embarassing that I recorded the Olympics, and was able to catch up to watching it live on TV after starting watching the recording about two hours prior?)  Plus, when it comes to gymnastics and other "rountine" sports, they are only showing the U.S. and barely focusing on any of the other countries.  It would be nice to see some routines from other countries to see what we're actually up against!  I am hoping that future Olympics will not be as bad as this.  The only thing I can surmise to explain the poor coverage is that they can't show anything live from London during primetime because of the time difference.

Live Extra provides archives of all events without any commentary, and it covers a wider variety of countries for all routines. It's really nice.
