Sounds like some sort of a hardware failure or issue of some sort, which wouldn't surprise me since this machine is over 5 years old.
5 years? That's not that old IMO. Are you sure everything is in tact in there? My computer made a beeping sound once because I didn't have the memory sticks in their slots all the way.

My PC is 3-4 years old. Until recently, it's been showing numerous problems. I can't even shut down Windows proplerly. I guess XP is too old to support my PC now.

IMO, a computer should last twice that amount of time.

Also, they say you should format your hard drive and restore to factory settings once a year.

I agree....and they should, at least they used to  <_< ... I reformat every year, and it keeps it nice and fresh. I have my nice shiny new laptop and a Dell Dimension V350 from '98 in the basement. I reformat it every year, and it runs nice and fast. I upgraded it from Windows 98 to 2000 and then to XP, and it runs like new. Sure it's a little slow, but it runs marvelously for its age. That's how a computer should be!  :yes: :happy:

Yep, I am currently using a machine that is 5 years old. I reformated the harddisk two days ago, and it is going strong! Bad luck with my Dell Dimmension 4400, It died. The motherboard in it decided to take a vacation. Its just scrap metal now lol. Well, my oldest, and usable machine is a SGI Indy and NEC Ready 9701SE. THey were made at the same time. About 16 years old... each. They still run :)
