Terrible HD channel audio
« on: February 10, 2008, 06:54:35 AM »
For the last day or two, the audio levels on the HD channel have been going up and down like crazy. It used to be that the commercials and the LF were much louder than the national broadcast, but as of right now, it's the exact opposite. You can hear the national audio fine, but the commercials and especially the LF music are *very* quiet. A few seconds ago, the audio levels were fluctuating so much that DirecTV killed the feed for a few minutes and put up a "technical difficulties" screen.

Edit: A few seconds after I posted this, they killed the feed again for the entire duration of the commercials. The feed returned the second the LF began.

Edit 2: Now I see why they've been killing the feed during the commercials; TWC isn't even outputting commercial audio at all on the HD channel right now!

I have the volume issue on the regular feed that's been ocurring for a year and a half. It's slowly being fixed. Commercials have considerably louder volume than the actual network audio.

That's normal.

How could it be normal?

1. It didn't used to be like this
2. None of ANY of the other channels have this.

So how could it possibly be normal? I've heard my headend is the only one this happens to.

All channels have it. Listen carefully to any channel. At some point a commercial will come on that is far louder than the show you were watching. It's an advertising technique meant to grab the viewer's attention. It's a more widely used technique today than it used to be, so while I think its always been around, it may indeed be more prevalent today then it used to be in the past. But it always has been like that to some extent.

I can assure you that the claim that your headend is th only one this happens to is false. Whoever told you that has swiss cheese for a brain.

Yes, SOME commercials are. on TWC, ALL of them are. No one else has reported this at all.

I know for a fact that it is not a normal occurance.

When you compare the normal TWC volume to all of the other channels, TWC's volume is considerably lower. The headend is aware of the issue, as well as TWC, but neither of them have done anything about it. Big surprise...

Having LOW volume may be abnormal. But HIGH volume is not. However, I don't think you ahve that problem either. You just htink you do since the commercials are loud.

I guess its hard to tell whether its HIGH commercials, or LOW network volume. But when you compare the normal network volume to any other normal network channel, it IS much lower. I dunno.

I've been through the channels many times (I'm a known channel flipper!) and some channels are lower than others during normal programming, but all are considerably louder during commercials. I watch a number of channels that are low until the commercials come on and blow my brains out.

Yep, Gary is correct. I hear this happening on all channels when cable companies show their own commercials over what the channel itself is showing. As far as I know, this is not an issue.

I've never experienced it on any other channels, other than maybe 1 or 2 commercials where the volume is noticably higher.
