They've started showing Labor Day openers. And, yes, it's the same opener as they used last year.

EDIT:  "For those who don't regularly watch The Weather Channel, when you see Jim Cantore in your town, you pack up the station wagon and run like hell."

That is what I would do... or maybe something else...

Say, how is TWC covering Gustav? I am not watching them, but I have a feeling they have the radar insets as I speak. It does look like Gustav will make landfall as a major hurricane. I wonder how TWC will conduct their coverage then.

They actually don't have the satellite inset up yet. Now that I think about it, that's pretty surprising.

I'm sure they'll be in total freak-out mode soon enough, though.

When does TWC normally go into Storm Alert? About 24 hours before potential landfall, right?

Yes. Usually when there's a  hurricane Cat 3 or higher about to make landfall.

Usually it's when the storm is 36-48 hours away from landfall from what I can recall.

So there's a Category 4 hurricane in the Carribean and TWC is still showing long-form programming...

Were they still on A&B?

Wow, they're actually airing the FFN/ICHT block today...  They had the inset satellite up for a few minutes, but then took it down shortly after the satellite picture froze (thanks VizWeather).

They never seem to pre-empt the 2PM hour of long-form. I'm sure the 5PM, 7PM, and 9PM hours will be pre-empted though. They'll likely used the same format they used for Fay.

Could they be using this hour break to prepare for a full-out Storm Alert at 3 PM ET?

I don't think TWC was ready to go into preemptions yet; I'm thinking they didn't plan on Gustav becoming a major hurricane and didn't call in the needed OCMs to get through the night. Hey, my mom is sitting here absolutely captivated by ICHT compared to the studio programming. She's obviously in the "target demographic." >_<
