Winnipeg weather
« on: July 24, 2007, 04:46:00 PM »
I thought I would share what I posted at TWC Classics in terms of a weather report for today with the addition of
a Winnipeg weather thread at TWC Today.

For past reports and chat posts, feel free to visit the TWC Classics' Winnipeg weather thread.
You will also find background introduction for this city in my Canadian weather tour.
http://www.twcclassics.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6362

Unusually hot temperatures invaded south central Canada yesterday and a major heat wave continues for Winnipeg
during the next 36 hours.  Temperatures running in the 90s isn't something Manitobans experience that often.

It will be even hotter this afternoon with peak readings in the upper 90s with a slight chance of more showers
by tonight. It will remain unseasonably hot tomorrow before a cold front moves through by Thursday.

Brand new to this thread are graphic pages for my Winnipeg weather reports. They are in Imperial units used in
the United States as opposed to metric units in Canada. I'm not sure yet if I'll expand to have an option for
metric units in my reports given that I'm using The Weather Channel's style graphics not seen on Canadian TV.
There are no additional metropolitan area reporting sites available here as there would be for American cities.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,
the current conditions graphic page background is by Eric Thomas at Flickr.

Thanks again, guys.  Glad you like it!  :)

Assiniboine South! Lol! :rofl2: Very nice graphics! I'm looking forward to making one. Is it possible to make one for Toronto?

I know, these STAR graphics don't exist for Winnipeggers, but I thought "what the hell", ya know?
I made sure I put a city indentifier put on the graphic page to indicate this is an intracity weather map.

I have a draft template ready for Ottawa, but I'm working on having as many reporting stations as possible
available to me for that city.  As for Toronto, I am definitely working on it.  Same for Montreal and other cities
in the Great White North.  They will be posted here and at TWC Classics (where their existing threads now exist).

It is another hot day in southern Manitoba this afternoon as temperatures will be above normal for
at least one more day before it finally cools off.  Temperatures across the city and the province range
from the mid 80s to low 90s.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,
the current conditions graphic page background is by Clashmaker at Flickr.

PLEASE NOTE:
I replaced International Falls, Minnesota with Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada for the regional weather maps.
Thunder Bay will accompany Winnipeg weather reports while International Falls will be on the Minneapolis
weather reports. I simply cannot fit both locations on the regional map without abbreviations.

Southern Manitoba is right under the core of the unseasonably frigid Arctic air mass during this overnight period
as temperatures are below zero at this hour across the city of Winnipeg.  Later today, it is not expected to
reach zero either. It is expected to remain that way for at least the next 48 hours.

It has certainly turned brutally cold in the Canadian Prairies during this overnight period.
Then again, Southern Manitobans expect this kind of weather less than one-third into the winter season.

Some of this frigid air will move south of the border as the week progresses with a deepening trough into
the eastern half of Canada and the United States.  Minnesota and North Dakota will already begin to feel
the effects of this area of Arctic high pressure today.

After today's expected high temperature of only zero Fahrenheit, peak readings will rise into the teens tomorrow
and on Wednesday under primarily fair skies. However, there is the chance for snow tomorrow.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,
the current conditions graphic page background is by Stuart Holden.

In one of the most frigid areas of all of North America, this overnight period is certainly the coldest of the season
as we are nearly one-third through so far.  Temperatures and especially wind chils are at very dangerous levels
across much of south central Canada and into the Upper Midwest region of the United States.

Environment Canada has issued a Wind Chill Warning for Manitoba, including the Winnipeg metropolitan area.
Anyone leaving exposed skin to the dangerous frigid temperatures risks life-threatening consequences as a result.

OFFICIAL WEATHER WARNING by Environment Canada on January 18, 2008 at 9:29 PM Central Time
A WIND CHILL WARNING is in effect through later this morning.

Extreme wind chills continuing.

This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions.
Monitor weather conditions. Listen for updated statements.

An Arctic high pressure ridge building into Saskatchewan is creating a cold northwesterly flow over Manitoba
creating wind chills in the -40°C (-40°F) to -45°C (-49°F) range through Saturday morning.
Moderation in the wind chill is expected during the day Saturday but extreme wind chills are forecast
to return again Saturday night in southeastern Manitoba.

Because International Falls, Minnesota had really extreme temperature and wind chill readings,
I'm including that location in this Winnipeg weather update. Two other reporting sites worth noting...
Fargo, North Dakota's temperature is -19°F (-28°C) with west winds at 8 MPH making it feel like -36°F (-38°C).
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada is at -15°F (-26°C) with west winds at 11 MPH making it feel like -35°F (-37°C).
Both locations are under clear skies.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,
the current conditions graphic page background is by Ronald Pineda.

Here are the metric temperature conversions for the above maps (nearest degree):

James Armstrong Richardson International Airport... -29°C
Fort Garry North... -27°C
Assiniboine South... -26°C
downtown Winnipeg... -26°C
The Forks... -25°C

International Falls, Minnesota... -31°C
Grand Forks, North Dakota... -29°C
Duluth, Minnesota... -28°C
Fargo, North Dakota... -28°C
Aberdeen, South Dakota... -25°C
Bismarck, North Dakota... -25°C
Minneapolis, Minnesota... -24°C
Marquette, Michigan... -23°C
Minot, North Dakota... -23°C
Rapid City, South Dakota... 23°C
Green Bay, Wisconsin... -21°C

OFFICIAL WEATHER WARNING by Environment Canada on January 19, 2008 at 9:33 PM Central Time
A WIND CHILL WARNING remains in effect through later this morning.

Extreme wind chills continuing.

This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions.
Monitor weather conditions. Listen for updated statements.

A very cold northwesterly flow continues over Manitoba, due to a large high pressure ridge over the western Arctic,
which extends across Saskatchewan and into the Dakotas, coupled with a strong low pressure centre
in the eastern Arctic. Little change is expected in this overall pattern for the next couple of days.
As a result, wind chills in the -40°C (-40°F) to -45°C (-49°F) range are likely to occur once again over parts
of southern Manitoba overnight through Sunday morning. Similar values are likely once again on Sunday night.

I plan to put together the graphics pages for this report as soon as possible.

THE WEATHER OBSERVATIONS POSTED BELOW AREN'T CURRENT.
THEY ARE FROM THE EARLY OVERNIGHT HOURS OF THIS MORNING.

If you want to go to where the heart of the Arctic air mass is, drive about 7 hours northwest of Minneapolis across the Canadian border to Winnipeg. Here, you will find weather you do not want to be caught dead in. Actual temperatures are at least -20° to -30° with life threatening wind chill readings.

During the last hour, James Armstrong Richardson International Airport on the west side of Winnipeg reported a temperature of -34° Fahrenheit with a wind chill reading of -60° Fahrenheit. Truly incredible stuff.

Environment Canada has issued a Wind Chill Warning for Manitoba, including the Winnipeg metropolitan area.
Anyone leaving exposed skin to the dangerous frigid temperatures risks life-threatening consequences as a result.

OFFICIAL WEATHER WARNING by Environment Canada on January 13, 2009 at 9:41 PM Central Time
A WIND CHILL WARNING is in effect through Wednesday night.

Extreme wind chills -40°C (-38°F) to -45°C (-47°F) tonight and Wednesday.

This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions.
Monitor weather conditions. Listen for updated statements.

Temperatures near -30°C (-20°F) or colder combined with northwest winds of 15 to 20 km/h (9 to 12 MPH) will produce wind chills of -40°C (-38°F) to -45°C (-47°F) over all southern and central Manitoba tonight and Wednesday. Extreme caution is advised. Under these conditions exposed skin may freeze in as little as 5 minutes.

PLEASE NOTE:
I plan to put together the graphics pages for this report as soon as possible. Due to running out of time between weather updates from National Weather Service reporting sites, I have used the Upper Midwest/Southern Canada regional map for this report instead of for the Twin Cities.
