As with the case for Philadelphia, the New York City metro is also enjoying mild weather for this time of year. A cold front will move through tonight, bringing a return of winter-like temperatures for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a flood warning caused by the rain and snowfall this week remains in effect for the Passaic River in Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties in New Jersey. The river is expected to crest tonight at 19.5 feet, which is a half foot above flood stage.

THE WEATHER OBSERVATIONS POSTED BELOW AREN'T CURRENT. THEY ARE FROM 90 MINUTES AGO.

This time, local forecasters got it right this time that this is truly the first significant winter storm of the season.
After just five inches had fallen in New York City's Central Park through yesterday, it appears that season snowfall
total could be doubled by the time this is all said and done.  The precipitation moved into the region during
the overnight hours from the south and west and it has not stopped snowing since.

Winds off the Atlantic Ocean will bring in warmer air and that means for at the very least the coastal areas
as well as the city itself, there will be a changeover from all snow to a mixed bag of precipitation with snow,
sleet and freezing rain later this afternoon. The distant northern and western suburbs may or may not see
this happen. The nearby suburbs such as where I'm located, I'll still expect the wintry mix to occur.

Generally 6 to 9 inches of snow is expected in most locations, except on Long Island and the New Jersey coast
given the longer period of a wintry mix will keep snowfall accumulations lower.  Temperatures are expected to
rise into the mid 30s this afternoon.  Despite a break in the precipitation in central New Jersey at this hour,
anything that falls from the sky is not expected to completely end until either very late tonight or during
the morning hours tomorrow.

The following is a weather statement from the National Weather Service:

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Upton, New York on February 22, 2008
A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect until 1:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on Saturday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on Saturday morning.

Moderate to occasionally heavy snow will continue through the morning. Snow accumulations of 6 to 9 inches are
expected today. The snow will then change over to a mixture of freezing rain, snow and sleet during the early to
mid afternoon and continue into this evening before tapering to a mixture of light snow showers and patchy
freezing drizzle by midnight. This will produce an additional tenth to a quarter inch of ice accumulation on top of
the snow.

These conditions will make for a treacherous morning and evening commute.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring.

Stay tuned to NOAA all hazards weather radio or visit our web site at weather.gov/NYC for further details
and updates.

Meantime, here is a WeatherSTAR 4000 emulator video clip I recorded. It's from 12:05 PM Eastern Time,
about 10 minutes after Central Park had officially issued their latest weather observations. Also, make note that
the emulator doesn't round up to the nearest full temperature degree as this was the case with 30.9°.

Also, since there were a number of reporting sites that did not have wind chill readings, it wasn't sufficient enough
to place those that did on a map, so I'm listing all wind chill readings toward the bottom of this post instead.

And... interestingly enough, the song I selected is currently on The Weather Channel's Local on the 8s playlist.
It appears Joyce Cooling is fast becoming one of my all-time favorite artists to have their music played during
this broadcast segment. It's her 1999 hit single "Before Dawn".

You can click the hyperlink from my FileFront page to see it as a trailer.

In being the coldest night of this week, the northeastern United States is for the time being under a strong area
of high pressure that is funneling down Arctic air down from Canada.  Temperatures are expected to bottom out
in the low to mid teens in most areas while there will be same single digit readings in the coldest spots.

Later today, the New York City metropolitan area will see an increase of clouds as the day progresses and
a quick Alberta clipper will move across the region tonight with snow to start and then with rising temperatures
see a changeover to rain.  Very little accumulation is expected from this system.  The weekend looks fair and
temperatures will return to around normal readings in the 40s.

Here is my WeatherSTAR 4000 emulator video for this report.

Re: New York City weather

Just a week ago, the New York City metropolitan area had its first winter storm of the entire season with
actual significant measurable snowfall.  Six inches fell in Central Park from that coastal low pressure system.
Tonight, we see a Alberta Clipper move through the region, but it's dropping more snow than what it
typically leaves.

At this hour, we have a variety of weather conditions.  Just after midnight, we have foggy conditions and a
very brief break in the precipitation. Strong southern winds off the Atlantic Ocean and also points southwest
of the city is rapidly pulling milder air northward.  A wedge of it as made it to the southwest shore of Long Island
and the city coastal areas with precipitation having now changed over to rain.  But just to the north and west of
New York City, it is still snowing across this part of the region.  White Plains, New York is reporting the steadiest
snow falling.

Temperatures will rise during the overnight hours and leftover precipitation will eventually change over to rain
before the precipitation exits later this morning.  Temperatures are expected to top out in the low 40s over
this weekend and under fair skies.

I will have graphics pages posted here as soon as possible.  Here are my WeatherSTAR 4000 emulator videos
for this report. A hyperlink to each YouTube video clip page is also provided. In the 20 minutes that passed
between the original observations and the exact time I recorded these two emulator video clips,
Central Park's temperature had risen from 35° to 36°.

Unfortunately if human beings didn't need sleep, I would have posted an update during the peak of a storm that
moved through the region between 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM this morning.  The unusually powerful winds caused
some damage across the New York City metropolitan area. Here is some local news coverage from this morning's
wild weather. See the video clips that accompany these news items. For while it still remains up,
see Bill Evans' weather report from WABC-TV for a recap.

The powerful storm system that brought snow and windy conditions to the Great Lakes region as well as
southern Ontario in Canada and rain and windy conditions to the northeastern United States coastal region
is exiting during this overnight period.

Now, skies are clearing out and behind it we have cold and windy conditions across much of the New York City
metropolitan area. It isn't really that cold, but wind chill readings will make it that way. There has been flooding
and wind damage across the region and I'm sure we'll hear some reports on them in the coming hours either
on The Weather Channel or on the local news.

The following is a weather statement from the National Weather Service:

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Upton, New York on March 8, 2008
A WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 7:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday.

Strong winds expected overnight...

The National Weather Service in Upton, New York has issued a Wind Advisory which is in effect until 7:00 AM
Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday. The High Wind Warning has been cancelled.

A strong southwest to west flow overnight will continue in the wake of a cold front. Winds of 20 to 30 MPH with
gusts to around 45 MPH will continue into the overnight before starting to subside toward daybreak.

Winds of this magnitude, combined with saturated soils from heavy rainfall, could topple whole trees.
The winds may also bring down tree limbs and power lines, causing damage to parked vehicles and power outages.
Loose outdoor items such as trash cans may also be blown around and should be secured.

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 31 to 39 MPH or gusts will range between
46 and 57 MPH. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

FINALLY, it is expected to sunny for later today and Monday with temperatures slightly below average
in the low 40s.

PLEASE NOTE:
Caldwell, New Jersey did not issue their latest weather observations, so it isn't included in this report.
I will have the graphics pages done as soon as possible.

With a strong area of high pressure off the New England coast and a low pressure storm system centered
north of St. Louis, the pressure gradients are tighter together between them to create strong winds from
primarily the north and west. As a result, today is a beautiful but blustery day across much of the northeastern
part of the country on this first full day of spring. Temperatures in the New York City metropolitan area are primarily
in the upper 30s to low 40s at this hour, about 10° below average.

As we head into the Easter holiday weekend, winds will diminish while skies will remain fair and temperatures
right around normal. For the time being, a Wind Advisory is in effect for the entire region until 5:00 PM.
See the National Weather Service statement below.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Upton, New York on March 21, 2008
A WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 5:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

A blustery northwest flow will continue through this afternoon with sustained winds 20 to 30 MPH
and gusts 40 to 50 MPH. Winds should start to diminish toward evening.

Winds of this magnitude combined with saturated soils from recent rainfall could topple whole trees. The winds may
also bring down tree limbs and power lines causing damage to parked vehicles and widely scattered power outages.
Loose outdoor items such as trash cans may also be blown around and should be secured. Winds this strong can
make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles and on elevated roadways and bridges.

I've just posted the data first... still have to post the wind chills and forecast information.
No, I haven't done the maps with animated icons yet as I have to download Adobe Fireworks.

A low pressure system is bringing periods of rain in the area. Right now no precipitation is present after having a period of rain this morning. Some might of seen a few peeks of sunshine this afternoon, but most saw mainly overcast skies. Another round of rain is in the forecast for tonight, with temperatures not getting much cooler than what they are currently.
