After a day or two of dry, windy weather, more snow associated with a fast-moving clipper system is falling in the area.

Here is the special weather statement from the National Weather Service in Upton, NY, issued at 2:41 PM this afternoon:

Quote
...SNOW MAY MAKE FOR A SLOWER THAN NORMAL EVENING COMMUTE...

LIGHT SNOW IS EXPECTED TO PERSIST THROUGH 7 PM...ALTHOUGH THERE
MAY BE SHORT PERIODS OF HEAVIER SNOW FROM NORTHEASTERN NEW JERSEY
INTO NEW YORK CITY AND LONG ISLAND.

ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO ONE INCH ARE EXPECTED THROUGHOUT THE TRI
STATE REGION...MAINLY ON THE GRASS.

EVENING COMMUTERS SHOULD PLAN ON EXTRA TRAVEL TIME...AS THE SNOW
WILL RESULT IN LOW VISIBILITY. SECONDARY ROADS AND BRIDGES MAY
BECOME SLIPPERY.

THE WEATHER OBSERVATIONS POSTED BELOW AREN'T CURRENT. THEY ARE FROM EARLY THIS MORNING.
Stay tuned for a weather update this afternoon.

As it is the case in Philadelphia, it is also quite cold in the New York City metropolitan area during
this overnight period. Clear skies reign supreme nearly regionwide with the exception being in
northwestern New Jersey where it is overcast. Temperatures are in the teens for all locations with
Danbury, Connecticut checking in at 9° at this hour.

Here is the latest from the National Weather Service in regards to this cold snap.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Upton, New York on January 2, 2008

Very cold air will continue rushing into the region fro the north overnight.
The core of this cold air mass will settle in early on Thursday.
Northwest winds will continue teaming up with the cold air to cause bone chilling wind chill values.
Those venturing outdoors through Thursday will need to dress in layers and cover up exposed skin.

Thursday's temperatures will be a good 15° below normal.  In fact, some locations will see the mercury struggling
to reach the 20° mark. The metro regions will likely reach the lower to middle 20s, but this is still far from
the normal high of around 39°.

The mercury will dip quickly Thursday night as a strong area of high pressure builds overhead.
Low temperatures will range from the upper teens in the metro regions to the single digits in the outlying areas.

A moderation in temperatures will commence Friday.  High temperatures on Friday will continue below normal,
but it will feel relatively milder due to the very cold weather Thursday and Thursday night.
The moderation will continue through the weekend with dry weather expected to last.

So as the National Weather Service stated, later today will be the coldest day of the season to date with highs
mainly in the low 20s before a major thaw is expected by this weekend and into early next week.
But for now, bundle up because you'll need it!

A quick update shows unseasonably very cold conditions are in the northeastern United States today as
readings at this hour are only in the mid teens to lower 20s across the New York City metropolitan area.
As I mentioned during the overnight hours, this cold snap will last only for another 12 to 18 hours before
a significant moderation in temperatures starting tomorrow.

At the same time, it is worth noting that it is evident this widespread dome of high pressure in
the eastern third of the country is quite strong.  Notice the rare very high barometric pressure readings.
Most are above 30.40 inches of mercury with the highest near 30.70 inches, which is truly incredible.
I cannot remember the last time I've seen it this high.

PLEASE NOTE:
There were no weather observations and forecast information available for Long Beach, New York.

During these overnight hours of Friday morning, this will be the last time it will be very cold for the short term.
After a high temperature of just 20° at Central Park in New York City, it will only drop a few degrees or so
to the forecast low.

As I have discussed in my previous report, a major turnaround in temperatures are in store by the
upcoming weekend as peak readings will rise into the 40s and eventually to near 60° by early next week.

For now, I have a couple of extremes to tell you about. At this hour, it is only 2° in Westhampton Beach, New York
while get this... an isolated area of freezing rain and thunder is being reported in Montauk, New York.
That isn't a misprint, folks. At the same time, the barometric pressure remains unusually high right now
with the highest among the major observations sites across the northeastern United States being at
Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport being at 30.71 inches of mercury. Absolutely incredible!

After a high temperature of 63° yesterday at Central Park in New York City, it is expected to be even milder today.
As it was a year ago this week, we may see record-breaking peak readings this afternoon across the region.
The exception will be at shoreline areas.  Long Island and Connecticut coastal locations are noticeably cooler
in the 50s. Central Park's record high for today's date is 65° in 1998, so there is a good chance it will be broken.

This early January thaw will not last long as temperatures will return to seasonable levels by the end of
the upcoming weekend.

PLEASE NOTE:
Hartford's Brainerd Airport did not provide their latest observations for this hour. So I'm using a site on the
east side of the city as its substitute for this report. The strangest blooper in temperature readings
was posted for their 12:55 PM update where it had it at 82°, obviously wrong.

Once again, it appears that forecasters have jumped the gun on this nor’easter that has developed later than
expected off the mid-Atlantic coast late on Sunday.  During these early overnight hours, the rain/snow line
has progressive moved south and through New York City to make the changeover complete.

Interestingly, during WNYW-TV's 10:00 PM newscast, it was raining.  Nick Gregory was correct in that in due time,
it would change to snow in the city.  During the 11:00 newscasts on WCBS-TV and WABC-TV in particular,
they had reporters on location in parts of the metropolitan area.  Also during this part of the newscasts,
they showed snow falling above 700 feet while it was raining on the Manhattan streets below.
Around 11:30 PM, the rain changed over to snow where I'm located and just within the last 2 hours,
it has done the same in New York City itself.

The coastal areas will at most see a coating to an inch of snow with all rain down the New Jersey shore while north
and west of the city may see roughly up to 3 inches.  But if you are in interior Connecticut toward Hartford,
higher accumulations are expected.  The snow is forecast to taper off later this morning.  According to the latest
radar view I've provided, the back edge of the precipitation is already past Belmar, New Jersey and moving northeast.

The following is a weather statement from the National Weather Service:

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Upton, New York on January 14, 2008
A HEAVY SNOW WARNING is in effect until 12:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.

Rain will gradual mix with snow, then changeover to all snow after midnight.
The snow will increase in intensity overnight.
The snow may be heavy at times before tapering off Monday morning.
Total snow accumulations are expected to range from 4 to 7 inches.

A Heavy Snow Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.
Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency.
If you must, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Surprisingly, this Heavy Snow Warning is still in effect for most of the metropolitan area.  We'll see if it is cancelled soon.

It may not be as cold as the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the United States, but it is still cold here
nonetheless. The large area of Arctic high pressure settled into the northeastern part of the country last night
and very cold temperatures is in the forecast during this overnight period and into later today.
Overnight lows will be in the single digits and lower teens while it will be in the mid to upper 20s during the day.

Here is a WeatherSTAR 4000 emulator clip for the latest weather conditions from nearby White Plains, New York.
It is from 2:05 AM Eastern Standard Time. Click the hyperlink below to see the video clip. The song used is
The Weather Channel's J flavor version of "Out In The Cold" by George Howard, one of my all-time favorite
Local on the 8s songs.

Re: New York City weather
« Reply #38 on: February 01, 2008, 02:25:20 PM »
The same major storm system that brought snow to the northern Great Plains and Great Lakes regions and
severe storms in the south is moving through the northeastern part of the country today. Northern parts of the
New York City metropolitan area have been receiving freezing rain, which is making driving conditions hazardous.
Temperatures are slowing rising above the freezing mark from a south to north direction.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been in effect for the far northern and western suburbs and is set to expire
at 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.

Conditions are expected to improve by tomorrow with above normal temperatures to near 50°, but in the meantime,
the evening rush hour is forecast to be damp with a possible thunderstorm in some locations across the region.

I'll be putting together the graphics pages as soon as possible, just like my previous entry.

It is a dreary midday hour in New York City today, but it is in no way dampening the spirits of millions of
New Yorkers who are enjoying the New York Giants' Super Bowl victory.  The team is right now in the middle of
their celebration parade down the Canyon of Heroes under overcast conditions and temperatures near 50°.
The rain held off in the vicinity of the parade and City Hall as the precipitation is off well off to the northwest
and to the east of the city.

However, there is a significant chance there will be thunderstorms around and the National Weather Service
has them in the forecast for later today.  So you were seeing the metropolitan area forecast map correctly.

It will remain unsettled for the remainder of the week as temperatures will continue to rise to record high levels
tomorrow as readings are expected to top 60° tomorrow, but then significantly drop down again on Thursday with
a chance of snow showers.

PLEASE NOTE:
There were no weather observations or forecast data available for Long Beach, New York,
so that location isn't included on the New York City metropolitan area weather maps.

Wednesday's unseasonably mild weather set numerous record high temperatures for Wednesday across the
New York City and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.  It didn't last that long as winter will make its comeback
by week's end.  Notice that Philadelphia's record high for Wednesday's date stood for a whopping 124 years!

Below are communities and area airports that provided their maximum temperatures for Wednesday.
There are a couple of reporting sites that are not really in the New York City metropolitan area, but it is covered
by its National Weather Service Forecast Office in Upton, New York.  They are Groton, Connecticut and
Norwich, Connecticut.

Those that set new records are indicated in red text.  The data posted here is from the National Weather Service
and those that are not would be indicated with a blue asterisk.  Many thanks to Kevin K at TWC Classics
for his assistance in putting together the information.

THE WEATHER OBSERVATIONS POSTED BELOW AREN'T CURRENT. THEY ARE FROM MIDNIGHT THIS MORNING.

After an afternoon high temperature of 43° just before 1:00 PM, the passage of a very strong cold front has
provided very windy conditions across the northeastern quadrant of the United States and ushered in
the Arctic air from the Great Lakes region and southern Canada. While it won't be anywhere close to
the frigid cold that the Upper Midwest part of the country has been dealing with, wind chill readings will dip
below zero in many locations during the overnight hours.  From New York City toward the northern suburbs,
snow squalls raced across the region during the afternoon hours bringing a trace of snow to Central Park.
The official snowfall for this season remains at 2.9 inches, well below the average through this date on
the calendar.  For me, I saw a brief snow burst around 3:40 PM and then the much stronger one between
4:30 to 4:40 PM where heavy snow and high winds reduced visibility briefly to less than ¼ mile.

Check out the latest National Weather Service statement for more details...

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Upton, New York on February 10, 2008
A WIND ADVISORY remains in effect until 6:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on Monday morning.

BLUSTERY CONDITIONS THROUGH TONIGHT...

An Arctic airmass has overspread the area with air temperatures already around 20° late Sunday evening.
Temperatures will continue to fall to about 15° overnight. The combination of westerly winds of 20 to 30 MPH
with gusts of 45 to 50 mph and the frigid air temperatures will result in wind chill values ranging from
0° to -5° overnight.

The New York City department of homeless services encourages people to call 311 to report the location of
any homeless individuals they may see. Extra staff and volunteers are standing by to provide transportation
to shelters throughout the night.

Strong west winds continue as cold air moves in behind an Arctic front that moved through the region
Sunday afternoon. West winds of 25 to 35 MPH with gusts 45 to 50 MPH at times will occur through tonight.

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 31 to 39 MPH or gusts will range between
46 to 57 MPH. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
Use extra caution. Tree limbs and even weakened trees may fall with these high winds.

PLEASE NOTE:
Jamestown, New York did not provide wind speed and its wind chill reading for this update,
so I'm using Bradford, Pennsylvania instead. I will post the graphics pages as soon as possible.

Paul, check Philadelphia's record. The information I have says that its record is 68°, set in 1991.

I double checked the information and the National Weather Service says Philadelphia International Airport's
old record high temperature for February 6th was indeed 65° set in 1884.

Oh, okay. I was just checking. I use TWC to get my record data so the information I use is likely different than what you use.
