I thought I would share what I posted at TWC Classics in terms of a weather report for today with the addition of
a New York City weather thread at TWC Today.

Today is expected to be the hottest day of the 2007 calendar year in the New York City metropolitan area as
well as other parts of the northeastern United States. Temperatures are expected to top out in the mid to
upper 90s this afternoon with some hazy conditions in some areas. The hot spots of northern New Jersey and
the Lower Hudson River Valley may be close to 100°.

It will remain unseasonably hot and it will be humid (as a typical July day should) for at least the next two days.
The chance for showers and scattered thunderstorms will increase as the week progresses and hopefully
the first true heat wave will end by Thursday or Friday as peak temperatures will be back to seasonable levels.

4000 Emulator clip from Central Park

JFK Airport recorded the highest daily amount of rainfall on record today. Exactly three quarters of an inch of rain fell, breaking the old record set in 1984 by four hundredths of an inch.

A tornado was also reported near Islip in Long Island, something that does not happen quite often in this part of the country. Here is a public information statement from the NWS.

National Weather Service meteorologists investigating storm damage
in the Islip Terrace area with Islip emergency management officials
have confirmed that tornadic damage has occurred in the area.

The tornado path was discontinuous and started in the town of Islip
Terrace sometime between 9:20 am and 9:30 am near the intersection
of irish Lane and the north service Road of sunrise Highway. It then
continued about two-thirds of a mile to the eastnortheast across
Carleton Avenue... across Roslyn and Nassau streets and ended at
Nassau and kunigunda place. The path was narrow at first... only
around 50 yards across near the intersection of irish Lane and the
north service Road of sunrise Highway but fanned out to 150 yards
toward the end.

Most of the damage was to Hardwood trees. Twisted off branches were
evident throughout the damage path. Some trees were snapped off
halfway up... including some healthy... forty-plus foot pines.

In addition... the medical arts building at irish Lane and sunrise
Highway sustained structural damage... with significant loss of its
roof covering and the hvac unit blown off its roof. Other homes
along the damage path also sustained some minor damage mostly to
siding and some directly from trees.

Based on the damage this tornado is classified as an EF-1 tornado
with estimated wind speeds of 85 to 100 mph.

The National Weather Service had issued a Severe Thunderstorm
Warning for this storm at 849 am that was upgraded to a Tornado
Warning at 919 am. The tornado occurred in the Islip Terrace area
around the time the Tornado Warning was issued.

Sorry about the delay.  I forgot to post this here immediately after I posted the update over at the classics forum.

As with Philadelphia, the Big Apple will experience comfortable temperatures and low humidity for the weekend. The high humidity will return however by the middle of next week, so enjoy this nice weather while it lasts.

While it is certainly not a hot day as it has been in the southern portion of the country,
the New York City metropolitan area cannot get used to slightly below average temperatures.
By tomorrow, the heat returns to the northeastern United States. For the time being,
readings are in the mid-80s, but it is humid and hazy across the high majority of region.

There is a good chance of showers and thunderstorms later today with areas where gusty winds and
isolated pockets of heavy downpours from storms arriving in time for the evening rush hour or dinner hour.

New York City will not be as hot as places southward, but highs will still be middle 90's for tomorrow. Relief is on the way for Thursday. Temperatures Thursday through this weekend will be in the 80's.

It is a very unseasonably cool and damp afternoon in the Big Apple as rain is coming down and temperatures
are believe it or not are only in the upper 50s to low 60s across the region.  Thanks to this seldom occasion
with the jetstream parked to the south in the mid-Atlantic region and a stationary front down there as well,
significantly cooler air has filtered into the northeastern United States for the last four days.
We are at least 20° below normal for this second half of August and at the moment it feels like October.
However, summer will make its return in a big way by the upcoming weekend with temperatures around 90°.

For now, rain will remain in the forecast through the rest of today and tonight before conditions improve
for tomorrow. While the threat of showers and thunderstorms are possible on Thursday, it will be warmer
as readings will return to normal in the low 80s.

PLEASE NOTE:
Woodbridge, New Jersey and Huntington, New York's reporting sites were not available, so those locations
are not included on the metropolitan area weather maps. Wayne, New Jersey already had its latest temperature
surpass its forecast high.

Where can you get the old and new icons?

The old icons can be downloaded here. However, many of the icons not featured in that package, such as Few Showers, AM clouds, and the Mostly Sunny icon, are ones that I created. Others including Thunder and Strong Storms were designed by Tyler.

On this 6th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City, this is the first time
that it has rained on the same day the victims are publicly remembered. Areas of light to moderate rain has fallen
across the entire region today and there is a good possibility there may be pockets of heavy rain and even
scattered thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid to upper 70s, which is very close to
normal high temperatures for mid-September.

As Kevin mentioned, yesterday ended an 18-day drought with no measurable rainfall at Central Park as .13 inches
was recorded.

On a side note, I am using an image from prior to that horrible day six years ago for my graphic page background.
Sorry, I didn't have time to actually search harder for one that would reflect the overcast conditions in
New York City today. But I wanted to have something that includes the former World Trade Center's twin towers,
always a part of the city skyline regardless if it is no longer standing today. In fact, I might have additional images
of the iconic buildings in future weather reports.

THE WEATHER OBSERVATIONS POSTED BELOW AREN'T CURRENT. THEY ARE FROM EARLIER THIS MORNING.

Cooler and drier air moved into the northeastern quadrant of the country and is now giving us
our first autumn preview as this summer is quickly coming to a close. Just one week from the first day
of fall, a strong dome of high pressure that brought frosty nighttime conditions to the upper midwest
of the United States last week provided below-normal temperatures over the weekend under clear skies
throughout.

It will be another unseasonably cool and generally clear night in the New York City metropolitan area
during this overnight period. Low readings are expected to bottom out in the mid to upper 40s in
many areas, but around 50 in the city. The coldest spots might dip into the upper 30s as it already has
in Danbury, Connecticut.
