On this two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, all is quiet on the Gulf Coast during this early
overnight period. There is the chance of scattered showers and a possible thunderstorm or two
for at least the next 36 hours. Temperatures will be near 90° later today and Friday.
In case anyone is interested, I posted a blog entry on Hurricane Katrina.

Yes, I most certainly will be. I nearly completed all the graphic pages for San Francisco days after putting together the San Diego package, but got sidetracked. I also promised you that I'll have Toronto coming in short order.
I have St. Louis just about ready to go, so in addition to Toronto in the near future, expect to see a new St. Louis weather thread.
In the meantime, I have added the local forecast screens for the above New Orleans weather update post.

Nice. BTW, what does that icon on Hammond mean? Is that Fog (it doesn't have the word "FOG" on it), or is it drizzle and I just can't see the raindrops?

It is The Weather Channel's mist weather icon. It is actually the first time I'm using it for a report.

Pockets of light to moderate rain from the eastern fringes of what was briefly Hurricane Humberto can be
found region-wide. Heavy thunderstorms are moving across downtown New Orleans at this hour and
more rain is in the forecast as previously posted.

I always love that thunderstorm icon with the 2 lightning strikes. That's how I find it to be a severe/strong t-storm icon.

Hey guys, just to let everyone know, I plan to post a weather report for New Orleans during the late night/overnight hours tonight. Hopefully Hurricane Gustav does not cause anywhere near the kind of damage Katrina left. At the same time, I'm crossing my fingers the levees around the city hold up this time.

Surprisingly enough, it is right now the calm before the storm in the Crescent City early on in this overnight period.
As Hurricane Gustav approaches the Louisiana coastline, winds will increase and moderate to heavy rain will move
into the region as we head toward dawn. It may be clear at the moment, but it is oh so temporary.
Just miles away from New Orleans, showers can be found in places like Slidell, Belle Chasse and Hammond.
Winds are also light, but that will obviously change as the day progresses.
Gustav is expected to make landfall within hours and its project track takes the center of the storm southwest
of New Orleans and into the south central portion of the state. How the repaired levee system around the city
holds up undoubtedly will be tested by storm surge and tropical storm to near hurricane strength winds.
This report I put together is from two hours ago.
I saved an image file of the radar view covering the hour since the data was retrieved.
I will attempt to resave it and try to get it onto the post later today or tonight.

The weather's been nice, but it sure has been dry as a bone. October is typically the dryest month around here, but not a drop of rain has fell at Armstrong Int'l this month.

Mardi Gras festivities went out on a somewhat wet note - depending on where you are - and the Lenten season got off to a VERY stormy start.
Clusters and lines of severe thunderstorms paraded across the area yesterday afternoon across the Northshore Tuesday afternoon and across areas south of Lake Pontchartrain and southeastern Mississippi overnight and this morning. Several tornadoes were reported and confirmed across the area:
Lacomb to Slidell and Bush, La.: Both tornadoes were rated EF2s
Biloxi and near Long Beach, Miss.: Both tornadoes rated EF1s.
People also reported tornadoes in Kenner and Lafitte, La. The NWS is still trying to decide if tornadoes struck the area. New Orleans Int'l Airport recorded a 77 mph wind gust and set a daily rainfall record with 3.83 inches. Four to six inches of rain was common north of the lake while three to five inches were common south of the lake.

Strangely enough, with all the talk about the Mississippi River flooding, outside of the levees, the rest of us are experiencing drought conditions across SE LA and Coastal MS.
A burn ban has been put into place across Lafourche Parish. Also, across the metro area and back southwest into Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes (in areas that could see 5'-25' feet of water should the Morganza open!) and all the way northeast along the Mississippi Coast we are in an extreme drought.
The remainder of the area is under a severe drought, except northern portions of the Northshore, which are in a moderate drought.
Why have we been so dry? Well, a lot of the issue lies in La Nina. Since we have been in that general pattern over the past year, we've shut off much of the Pacific moisture that typically gives us our prolific rains.
Fair-weather high pressure, generally, has been established across the Gulf South, forcing any rainy systems to the north, into the water-logged mid and upper Mississippi Valley. Also, with the high in place, we've squelched any real chances of our typical afternoon thunderstorms. Rainfall deficits are running 6.3" on the year and 1.27" on the month at the Airport and things aren't looking up with rainfall forecast to continue to be below average for the next three months.
Some may talk about the couple of good-sized flooding rain events that we've had in the first half of the new year, but unfortunately, after having a very dry start to 2011 and ending 2010 over 10" of rain below average, it only really put a very small dent in our dry conditions.
Now, looking into the future, for hurricane season 2010, if this high pressure were to hold strongly overhead, storms could be pushed away from our area, although La Nina does usually provide for a greater number of storms.
Overall, this could be good and bad news... although it would keep us protected from the destructive effects of a tropical system, we still wouldn't be receiving the rain we so much need. What's actually expected this summer is that we could push to more neutral pattern. We'll have to see if this could finally begin to break down our dry conditions, allowing more rain and, perhaps, more tropical activity to come our way.

To sum things up: It's too hot and too dry. A tropical disturbance that tracked across Florida will stay off the Louisiana coast, leaving us rainless. Many records were smashed today across the region and more are forecast to be broken both Thursday and Friday.

I just moved out of NOLA, but the weather in Lafayette isn't much different. I watch the Baton Rouge news, and one of the meteorologists there said that we may not get as much rain as we hoped for next week. We're not supposed to be begging for rain in south Louisiana during the summer. What is going on, Mother Nature? :hammer:

We had some relief from the heat and drought the last full week of June, but the pattern has shifted back. The pattern should change somewhat again starting July 4, giving us our daily showers and storms again.
June has been the driest and hottest on record for Louisiana.

After another streak of hot, dry weather, the Gulf South region has been kind of soggy as of late as showers and storms have plagued the area...not because of the normal afternoon variety of storms but because of disturbances going around the upper high that has been putting a beat down on the Plains states with brutally hot weather.

Evening gang.
It's been a wet weather pattern across the area since I last posted...and it's putting a good dent in our drought and rain deficit. Today alone, New Orleans Int'l set a rainfall record for this date with 3.27 inches of rain, breaking the old record of 3.08 inches back in 1998. This also puts New Orleans more than five inches above normal for the month and gives the city the fifth wettest July ever on record. However, the city is still roughly 5.5 inches below normal for the year. Some street flooding occurred on the east bank of Jefferson Parish.
To sum things up: Don will stay south of us, but the high steering Don will move over us for the weekend and reduce rain chances. Above normal rain chances return next week.

Hey guys,
Hurricane Irene did help us out in one way: cooler nights on the Northshore; yet that has resulted in temps near 100° the past few days. Sadly, the humidity is coming back; yet there's a silver lining in that too as rain chances will increase from here on out.
Right now, there's a huge marsh fire at the Bayou Savage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans East, which has resulted in smoky/smelly conditions and reduced visibilities across the immediate Southshore (Kenner, Metairie, New Orleans, Westbank):

A wildfire continues to burn marsh grasses in New Orleans east near
Interstate 10 and Interstate 510. During the first part of
tonight... light south to southeast winds are expected. This may
transport the smoke northward and could cause some minor impacts
across portions of the North Shore... including Mandeville...
Covington and Slidell. Winds are expected to calm later in the
night. This may result in smoke becoming trapped near the surface in
the vicinity of the fire... and could also result in reduced
visibility along interstates 10 and 510 as well as in the
surrounding areas.
Smoke may remain trapped near the surface through the mid morning
hours Wednesday before winds strengthen and help to disperse it
through the afternoon.
Smoke from the fire will continue to be a possible health issue
in the area for sensitive groups... including the elderly and
people with respiratory diseases such as asthma. People in these
sensitive groups should avoid prolonged outdoor activities and
exertion.

Well, I did say rain chances were going to be increasing by the end of the week, but not like this: That wave in the Gulf is now TD #13 and will likely become TS Lee. That has really changed the forecast for the next several days. Eight to 15 inches of rain with isolated areas of up to twenty inches of rain is forecast across the entire region over the next several days.

Lingering rains from the remains of Lee are moving out of SE Louisiana and across Mississippi as of this morning. Cooler and drier weather is moving into the area thanks to a cold front. However, there are still some advisories in effect:
* Tornado Watch 838 is in effect until 4 pm for Harrison and Jackson counties and Mississippi and Chandeleur sounds.
* A Wind Advisory is in effect until midnight tonight for all parishes south of Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas and until 4 pm today for the rest of SE Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
* Coastal Flood Warnings are in effect until 4 pm for coastal areas of Mississippi and SE Louisiana, including Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas and the rivers that feed into these two lakes.

A winter storm watch is now up for the entire area serviced by the NWS New Orleans from 6 am Tuesday to 6 am Wednesday. In fact, the watches stretch from Houston to the Carolinas.
As of this posting, it appears that it will be mainly a wintry mix to snow across the Northshore and ice or a wintry mix for areas south of Lake Pontchartrain. Up to two inches of snow are possible across the Northshore while a quarter inch of ice is possible south of the lake.

Tonight - A 30 percent chance of showers after midnight. Cloudy, with a steady temperature around 54. South wind around 5 mph becoming northwest after midnight.

Fog season is upon us in southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
Expect warm days and cool nights with foggy mornings until the next cold front pushes through...and there's no telling when that will happen.

There is a slight chance of severe weather today across the region today.
A tornado watch is in effect until 6 pm for southern Louisiana, the southern half of Mississippi and SW Alabama. Expect heavy rain, strong winds, hail and isolated tornadoes. Most of the active weather is now in Mississippi but that will change.
Currently, a tornado warning is in effect for Amite and NW Pike counties, Miss. until 12:15 pm. This does include the city of McComb. Rotation has been detected with a storm now near Liberty.
Temps will be mild until the front passes, then a quick cooldown in time for Christmas.

Some sad news tonight. A tornado killed four people - two in Marion County, Miss. and two in Jones County, Miss.
A storm survey team from NWS New Orleans will survey damage in Tangipahoa and Washington parishes tomorrow, but it appears a tornado touched down in Amite, La. and traveled across northwestern Washington Parish north of Franklinton, southern Walthall County south of Tylertown, central Marion County - including Columbia, SE Jefferson Davis County, southern Covington County just south of Collins and central Jones County just north of downtown Laurel. Damage is pretty extensive in Amite, Columbia and Laurel.
NWS Jackson will also do surverys tomorrow across the affected counties.

NWS Jackson had determined that the tornado that struck Jones County, Miss. was an EF2 with 125 mph winds. Weather experts believe the tornado was as wide as 350 yards and tracked 5 miles. The path of destruction began at 3:22 p.m., five miles west of Laurel and stopped four miles north of Laurel.

NWS New Orleans rates the Amite tornado an EF2 with winds around 115 mph. It touched down about one and a half miles east of downtown Amite near the intersection of La. 16 and La. 1054. It traveled 4.63 miles to about 6 miles northeast of downtown Amite.
NWS Jackson also confirms an EF0 tornado three miles northeast of Crandall in Clarke County, Miss. It traveled half a mile and was 100 yards wide. Another EF0 tornado was confirmed one mile northeast of Sumrall in Lamar County. It only traveled 1/4 mile. The tornado that struck Columbia was rated and EF3.

A Flood Watch has been issued across the region, starting at 6 pm Friday and ending at 7 pm Sunday. Periods of rain and thunderstorms will begin tonight and continue through Sunday evening as a warm front comes through tonight and a cold front Sunday evening. Many areas will see between 3-5 inches, with some isolated areas up to 8 inches.

Currently, a tornado warning is in effect until 230 pm for northern Tangipahoa Parish. A tornado was confirmed on the ground near Roseland. Another tornado warning runs until 215 pm for eastern Washington Parish.

Sorry for being away so long.
Today was the warmest Christmas Day on record for New Orleans, with a high of 82 degrees. That broke the old record of 79 set in 2008. It's been in the 70s and lower 80s since late last week. I had to burn my A/C a few times because it was so warm at night! We also got a break from the rain - which has been falling off and on since Sunday. More rain is forecast for the next few days, with severe weather possible Monday.

Something you don't see everyday: a large line of severe thunderstorms moved southwestward from southern Mississippi and the Northshore area of Louisiana across Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas and into the River Parishes and the Southshore area, causing widespread street flooding.
Even more unusual, a tornado touched down in the heart of New Orleans around 3:30 pm. It touched down at Marais and Annette streets in the 7th Ward and traveled SOUTHWESTWARD for a half-mile before lifting at North Claiborne Avenue and Saint Phillip Street in the Treme neighborhood. It was rated an EF-0 with 80 mph winds. Several homes were damaged, with three that collapsed. No injuries were reported.
