Title: Minot, ND Weather
Post by: ndinminot on October 05, 2011, 11:45:03 AM
Since I recently from from Central Ohio to the Magic City, and I have been posting some weather commentary on Facebook, I think I will move the commentary posting to here. I will start with a basic forecast, then add more info as I develop my routine:

Currently:

71 degrees, with sunny skies, SSE wind at 17 mi hr gusts to 21. Red flag warnings for Southern ND for much above average temperatures and Relative humidities under 30%. It will remain sunny with near record highs in the mid 80s.

A  front will pass through the area bringing a chance of rain and a tstorm. We should expect seasonable temperatures to return for next week.

Day length today: 11 h 26 min
Day length tomorrow 11 h 23 min

Average high for today is 61 - forecast is 85 (24 above avg), The Average low is 38 (low was 54, plus 16 on the avg)
The record high for today is 84 set in 1949. The record low is 24 in 2000.

It is an partly cloudy and rather breezy morning once again in Minot. Parts of Central ND are under a high wind watch and  about 3/4 of the state (also for most of MN and SD), excluding Minot and NW ND are under another Red Flag warning for High winds and low humidity. A Red flag warning means a potential for wildfires due to extremely dry vegetation combined with abnormally warm temperatures and sustained winds of at least 30 MPH. Currently it is 64 degrees with partly cloudy and windy conditions. As a cold front sweeps through, which is providing the Mountains with locally heave snowfall there will be a chance for scattered showers and maybe a tstorm for today. Highs will be still be above average but not 25-30 degrees above normal. Lows are still trending much above avg. The chance for precipitation will stick with us throughout the weekend as cooler temperatures (55-65 for high) will be on tap for next week.

Growing seasons statement from NWS for Bismarck, ND

Growing Season Coming To An End

WESTERN AND CENTRAL NORTH DAKOTA. SOME LOCATIONS HAVE NOT YET
RECEIVED A KILLING FREEZE. HOWEVER...NORMAL MORNING LOW TEMPERATURES
CONTINUE TO APPROACH FREEZING AND WE ARE COMING TO THE END OF THE

OFFICE IN BISMARCK WILL NO LONGER ISSUE FROST ADVISORIES...FREEZE

NEXT SPRING AT THE START OF THE LOCAL GROWING SEASON.

It makes sense that NWS no longer issue freeze watches/warnings because we are going to plunge into the deep freeze before too long. My personal forecast still calls for six snowstorms this winter, each dumping at least 6 inches of snow in Minot. This forecast will be revised as we progress through the winter season.
