Title: Los Angeles weather
Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on July 15, 2007, 12:56:19 PM
I thought I would share what I posted at TWC Classics in terms of a weather report from last night
with the addition of a Los Angeles weather thread at TWC Today.

For past reports and chat posts, feel free to visit the TWC Classics' Los Angeles weather thread.
http://www.twcclassics.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3834 (http://www.twcclassics.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3834)

The report below is from 10:55 PM Pacific Daylight Time last night.

A very pleasant evening in southern California tonight will give way fair skies tomorrow (Sunday).
Depending on where you live in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, it will be noticably warmer inland areas
with forecast high temperatures in the 90s while it'll be in the 80s within 20 or so miles from the coastline
(including downtown Los Angeles).  It will remain dry for at least the next five days.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,
the current conditions graphic page background is by Stephen Friday at Flickr.

I think it would be cool if the IS actually used graphics like that in the background from time to time.

Yes. Well the IS will be getting a graphic relaunch soon. I think they should use either actual pictures, or if they used different
backgrounds depending on the time of day. (i.e. Sunrise in the morning hours, Clouds in the Afternoon, Sunset in the evening, Stars overnight)

Yah. But if anything, Version 1 of the IS was better than the current version.

That's what I said. hopefully this time they'll IMPROVE it. Meaning, hopefully this time they'll make it better then it was before the relaunch.

Gil, your getting annoying. Remember what I said about this not being a posting contest. If you can't comprehend that I'm going to ban you.

Nice, Paul! Yeah, it would be cool if the IntelliStar would have city backgrounds and perhaps even different backgrounds for different parts of the day. Maybe the HD STAR will have that feature.

Is there something wrong with my graphics? I ask because no one has commented in them in a while. If there are any improvements you think I should make with my weather graphics, please let me know! 8)

Honestly, I don't think there is anything wrong with your graphics, Mike. If there's anything I can advise you on
is to make sure the temperature and weather icon are consistently positioned from location to location.
Also, not that there's anything wrong with them, but I would also double check each time you create
a map template to make sure they are straight at zero degrees on your Google Earth compass.
I have to catch myself in doing that, too.

A heat wave has gripped parts of the Golden State this weekend, especially today. Temperatures in many locations
will be near, at or above the century mark while any relief can be found right at the shoreline. The good news for
Los Angeles and across much of southern California is that the heat will subside to much more tolerable levels
tomorrow with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s with cooler readings at the shore.

For the time being, there is an Excessive Heat Warning in effect for Los Angeles until 7:00 PM
Pacific Daylight Time. Hope you're doing okay out there, Bob!

As it has been well-documented, areas of heavy rain and storms across much of southern California and
most of Arizona has caused flooding in many areas across the region this weekend.  Mudslides are occurring
in the wildfire burned areas where vegetation was stripped from the massive fires from three months ago.

At this hour, much of the precipitation has subsided for now, but more rain and thunderstorms are possible across
the region tonight. The bulk of the precipitation is moving right through Los Angeles and areas to the west and
southeast actually have pretty fair conditions and normal visibility.  Malibu, California is under some haze though,
but mudslides have been a major threat after rain fell there earlier.

Some updated weather information for the National Weather Service...

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Oxnard, California on January 27, 2008

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH remains in effect until 6:00 PM Pacific Standard Time

Severe Thunderstorm Watch 23 remains in effect until 6:00 PM Pacific Standard Time for the following locations:

Fresno County
Kern County
Kings County
Los Angeles County
Madera County
Mariposa County
Merced County
Monterey County
San Benito County
San Luis Obispo County
Santa Barbara County
Tulare County
Ventura County

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect until 9:00 PM Pacific Standard Time for Santa Barbara,
Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Showers will increase later this morning, then showers, heavy at times will continue through this evening.
Rainfall rates of ½ inch to one inch per hour are possible in heavy showers. There is a good chance of
thunderstorms later this morning through this evening and some thunderstorms could produce rainfall rates
in excess of 1½ inches per hour.

Intense rainfall will pose a significant threat of dangerous flash floods outside of burn areas and debris flows
in and below burn areas.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.
Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.

A WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 10:00 PM Pacific Standard Time

Areas of south winds will increase to 20 to 35 MPH with peak gusts to 45 MPH by this afternoon,
then continue through this evening before diminishing and shifting to the west. The strongest winds are expected
later this afternoon through the early evening, especially in the valleys and foothills. These winds may be
strong enough to knock down trees with shallow root systems due to the highly saturated ground.

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 MPH or greater are expected.
Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Here is some local coverage of today's weather event in Los Angeles and across southern California:

For my first report on Los Angeles, we are seeing above average temperatures, albeit not as hot as it was earlier this month when LA went up well into the 90's. Highs today were still a good 10-15° above average. Temperatures will cool down to near average by next week.

Just so there's no confusion, the "Civic Center" title you see on the map and current conditions page refer to the downtown area in Los Angeles. I've seen several sources (including the WeatherStars) that use that name so I decided to use it here.

Just as is the case with Sacramento, unseasonably hot weather can be found in the Los Angeles metropolitan area
today. Temperatures are well into the 90s this afternoon in the high majority of locations across southern California
with the exception being literally right at the coastal spots. That's where you can escape the heat by hitting
the beach where readings are in the 70s and 80s.

This heat wave that is making its presence felt up and down the west coast of the United States is expected
to last right through the entire weekend for Los Angeles and its surrounding suburban areas.

I will post the graphics pages as soon as I can.

Title: Re: Los Angeles weather
Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on December 15, 2008, 03:15:19 PM
It is an unusually chilly and damp morning in southern California with temperatures only in the upper 40s to low 50s and rain across much of the region. Roughly 20 miles west of Los Angeles, you will find much better sky conditions and better visibility.

After the recent wildfires, there are flood advisories that have been posted by the National Weather Service for the burn areas. Much of Los Angeles County is under the Flood Advisory until noon today. See the weather statements below for more details.

It will remain unsettled for at least the next 24 to 36 hours with a chance of more showers through at least tomorrow night.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Oxnard, California on December 15, 2008
A FLOOD ADVISORY is in effect for Los Angeles County until 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.

The National Weather Service in Oxnard has extended the flood advisory for Los Angeles County in southwest California until 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.

At 9:50 AM, Doppler radar indicated moderate to locally heavy rain continuing across much of Los Angeles County. The highest rainfall intensities will be focused across eastern Los Angeles County with rates between ¼ inch to ½ inch per hour. Storm totals have ranged between one and three inches across the Los Angeles basin. Urban and small stream flooding will continue across portions of the County through the remainder of the morning hours.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground.

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH remains in effect through this afternoon.

The Flash Flood Watch continues for the recent burn areas in Los Angeles County including Santa Catalina Island in southwest California.

Through this afternoon rainfall rates could exceed one half inch per hour through this afternoon.

Flash flooding and debris flows will be a particular threat in and below recently burned areas.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

Southern California residents in or near the recently burned areas are urged to take The Steps necessary to protect their property. Persons in the watch area should remain alert and follow directions of emergency preparedness officials.

More information from the USGS on debris flows and their impacts can be found at http://landslides.USGS.Gov/research/wildfire (http://landslides.USGS.Gov/research/wildfire) (all lowercase letters)

PLEASE NOTE:
I was unable to add the local radar view at the time I posted this report because the animated file is too big in size.
I hope to add it as soon as I can.
