... 2012 was the warmest year on record at Central Park NY...
... Other locations across the area had record breaking warmth as
well...

For the year of 2012... Central Park NY (nyc) recorded an average
temperature of 57.3 degrees. This breaks the record for the warmest
year on record. The previous record was 57.2 degrees... recorded in
the years of 1990... 1991 and 1998. Records for Central Park date
back to 1869.

A Sample of other first order climate locations reveals they also
came in with record breaking warmth. Here is that data.

Average temperature records and normals from 2012:

Station 2012 ranking previous record normal value departure

NYC 57.3 1 57.2 1990/91/98 55.0 2.3

LGA 58.5 tied(1) 58.5 2006 55.5 3.0

JFK 57.0 1 56.2 1991 54.5 2.5

Ewr 57.8 1 57.6 1990 54.9 2.9

Isp 55.3 1 55.0 1998 52.3 3.0

Bdr 55.6 1 54.3 1991/2010 52.5 3.1

Regarding precipitation... the area was generally drier than average.

Precipitation amounts and normals.

Station 2012 normal value departure last year value

NYC 38.51 49.94 -11.43 72.81

LGA 36.71 44.73 -8.02 65.34

JFK 39.85 42.77 -2.92 55.78

Ewr 36.35 46.25 -9.90 69.91

Isp 44.71 46.24 -1.53 52.32

Bdr 40.99 42.74 -1.75 57.88

As you can see... Central Park NY was quite dry. However... none of
these locations broke into the top 10 list for precipitation.

Regarding snowfall... data is usually calculated from July to July...
not calendar year.

I feel pretty confident that Monday will be in the low 60's. Once we have the FROPA, clouds will open up to sun winds will be NW and since the cold air won't be directly behind the front, we have a very good chance a 60's on Monday. 12z ECMWF agrees (shown below). Doubt we'll break the record of 67°F set in 1995.

MIND = BLOWN! :fire:

SREF has a 45-50% of 8"+ of snow Tuesday! One individual member of the SREF gives us 1.5" of precip. Based on a 15:1 ratio, that's 22.5" of snow!

A strong cold front will cross the region this afternoon. The
passage of the front will be marked by a wind shift from gusty
southwest winds to a period of strong westerly winds. Winds of 20
to 30 mph and gusts of 30 to 40 mph are expected in the wake of
the frontal passage... with a few higher gusts possible right
behind the front.

Winds this strong are capable of Downing a few small tree limbs
and branches... possibly causing isolated power outages. Driving
can also be difficult... especially for high profile vehicles.

Long Island, August-September 2012 tornadoes, Hurricane Sandy, Blizzard of 2013, how many places on Earth do you know can get all 3 of those events within a 6 month period?

... Cold snap will continue through at least Friday...

The current stretch of cold weather... with temperatures 10 to 15
degrees below mid winter averages... will continue into at least
Friday as an upper level disturbance passing through tonight
brings a reinforcing shot of Arctic air. Lows both tonight and
Thursday night should fall to 10 to 15 in and around New York
City... and into the single digits most elsewhere. Isolated spots
in the valleys well north and west of New York City... and possibly
also the Long Island Pine barrens region... could see temperatures
around zero.

As winds diminish tonight... below zero wind chills are not
expected. However... as northwest winds increase to 10 to 20
mph... wind chills should drop to zero to 10 below zero from just
before daybreak to around midday on Thursday. Similar wind chills
should occur Thursday night.

Arctic air will remain in place Friday into Friday night as low
pressure passes off to the southeast and brings some light snow.
Slow moderation in temperatures and wind chills should then begin
over the weekend into early next week in the wake of this system.

Significant impacts that warrant extra caution during this cold
snap include the potential for frozen water pipes and fire
sprinkler piping. For those venturing out... wear a warm coat and
gloves... cover your head... and dress in layers to limit direct
exposure and prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

Lows around the area:

My station: 10.1°F
KISP: 6°F
Westhampton: -6°F
Farmingdale: 8°F
Central Park: 12°F

Sucks that I didn't make it into the single digits last night. NWS has me at 12 tonight. Ugh..

Talk about a superstorm. 18z GFS shows a strong storm coming up the east coast, inland though, at hr 153. There has been a consistency with the GFS showing a very heavy convective band with this storm, possibly severe thunderstorms. The line moves north and doesn't weaken. Obviously this will change greatly, nice fantasy storm though. Here are some of the stats for KISP:

Total QPF: 2.68"
Highest Sustained Wind: S @ 45mph
925mb Winds: 107mph!
850mb Winds: 110mph!
Min Press.: 985mb

With that line of heavy convective precip, we would be able to mix down some intense winds. I haven't seen 925mb winds that strong since Sandy. With this storm, verbatim, we're talking about gusts 60-90mph!

ACCUMULATING LIGHT TO OCCASIONAL MODERATE SNOW WILL PUSH NORTHEAST
ACROSS THE TRI-STATE AREA THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS. ACCUMULATION
TOTALS WILL RANGE AROUND 1 INCH OVER NEW YORK CITY METRO...HUDSON

SOUTHEASTERN CONNECTICUT AND EASTERN LONG ISLAND.

IN ADDITION TO THE ACCUMULATING SNOW...REDUCED VISIBILITIES ARE
POSSIBLE...DROPPING DOWN TO BETWEEN 1 AND 2 MILES AT TIMES.

THE COMBINATION OF THE ACCUMULATING SNOW AND REDUCED VISIBILITIES
WILL CAUSE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS DURING THE EVENING
