THE MODELS ARE IN GENERAL AGREEMENT OF STEERING THE SFC LOW ACROSS
NJ AND TO OUR WEST. PRESSURE GRADIENT TIGHTENS...AND NAM REMAINS ONE
OF THE DEEPER SOLUTIONS WITH REGARD TO THE SFC LOW INITIALLY. EAST
WINDS INCREASE...BUT DO NOT HAVE THE CONFIDENCE TO ISSUE ANY WIND
RELATED HEADLINES AT THIS TIME. MY BEST GUESS IS FOR A FEW REPORTS
CLOSE TO ADVISORY CRITERIA ACROSS PORTIONS OF LONG ISLAND AND
POSSIBLY CSTL CT. HOWEVER...H8 JET STRENGTH NOT QUITE WHAT I WOULD
WANT IT TO BE FOR WIND ADVISORY LEVEL WINDS VERIFYING HERE...AND
THAT IS ACCORDING TO STRONGER NAM. GFS AND ECMWF ADVERTISE A MUCH
WEAKER JET LOCATED TO THE EAST.

LATEST 6Z NAM DOES FORECAST A 75 KT H8 JET OVER ERN LONG ISLAND AND
SE CT. THESE EASTERN LOCATIONS WILL NEED TO BE WATCHED.

Here's the NAM MOS forecast. Notice how it shows 32mph sustained winds for 03z, the GFS only has 21mph sustained winds.

The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued an

* Urban Flood Advisory for minor flooding of poor drainage areas
in...
Suffolk County in southeast New York...
Nassau County in southeast New York...

* until 345 am EDT...

* at 949 PM EDT moderate to heavy rain was falling across Long
Island and is expected to continue through the early morning hours.
Rainfall rates around half an inch an hour are expected during this
time.

These type of rainfall rates will cause flooding of urban
areas... highways... streets and underpasses as well as other drainage
areas and low lying spots.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. Most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Turn around and
find another Route.

Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases... or a
warning is issued.

This storm was different in many areas. You had to be right on the coast to experience high winds, which is why KJFK reported a sustained wind of 46mph and a 54mph wind gust, and another place in NY up to 58mph to make this a Category: 4 on the Relative Wind Storm Severity Scale; (there are 6 categories on the RWSSS). My weather station picked up 2.93" of rain in total from this nor'easter. The lowest pressure was 986.5hPa. We went from having a rainfall deficit of 10.07" to 7.38" <- Please note this isn't entirely accurate because the data on Wunderground fluctuates.

The following are unofficial observations taken during the recent
storm that has been affecting our region. Appreciation is extended to
Highway departments... cooperative observers... Skywarn spotters and
media for these reports. This summary is also available on our home

Freeze Warning in effect. I don't think it will go below freezing where I'm at but most of the radiational cooling areas around the tri-state may dip into the 20's (Long Island Pine Barrens, New Jersey Pine Barrens etc.) The wind and the ocean for the most part will keep me a bit warmer than the rest, NYC will have the urban heat island effect

... Freeze warning in effect from 4 am to 8 am EDT Saturday...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a freeze
warning... which is in effect from 4 am to 8 am EDT Saturday. The
freeze watch is no longer in effect.

* Locations... southwestern coastal Connecticut... portions of the
lower Hudson Valley and northeastern New Jersey... and eastern
Long Island.

* Hazards... freezing temperatures.

* Temperatures... around 32. Mid 20s possible across The Pine
Barrens of eastern Long Island.

* Timing... between 4 am EDT and 8 am EDT Saturday.

* Impacts... any outdoor... sensitive vegetation may suffer damage
if not protected.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A freeze warning means below freezing temperatures are imminent
or highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and other
sensitive vegetation.

Just as I thought, temps never dropped below freezing here. Got down to 35.6°F at my weather station and 34.0°F at the airport (which is closer to the radiational cooling zones). Ocean kept me warm :)

... This is severe weather awareness week...

Today Marks the end of severe weather awareness week.

Here is a quick review of the important points made this week.

Over the last 20 years... severe weather has killed 109 people in New
York... including 49 people due to flooding... 15 due to
tornadoes... 32 due to damaging thunderstorm winds and 13 from
lightning. In addition... severe weather has caused over three
quarters of a billion dollars in damage. On average... the National
Weather Service issues 400 severe thunderstorm warnings... 17 tornado
warnings and about 150 flash flood warnings each year for New York
state.

Plan now to keep safe during severe weather.

Before a storm... develop a plan for you and your family at
home... school... work... and when outdoors. Identify a safe place to
take shelter. Conduct frequent drills. Know what action you will
take when a warning is issued. Know where you live. The National
Weather Service issues warnings based on a specific storm's
movement. Know where to tune to receive the latest weather
information.

During severe weather... postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms
are imminent. Move to a sturdy building or car. Stay away from tall
objects such as towers... isolated trees and telephone poles. If
caught outdoors... find a low spot. Make sure your choice is not
susceptible to flooding. If in the Woods... take shelter under
smaller trees. If you are boating or swimming... seek shelter on land
immediately.

If a Tornado Warning is issued... move to a pre designated place of
safety... preferably a basement or interior room. Stay away from
windows. Get as low to the ground as possible. Cover your head. If
caught outdoors and a tornado threatens ... lie flat in a ditch or
depression and cover your head with your hands. Be aware of flying
debris. Flying debris causes most fatalities and injuries during a
tornado. Mobile homes offer little protection from a tornado.
Evacuate your Mobile home and move to your designated place of
safety.

Flash flooding can be deadly. Never underestimate the power of
water. Almost half of all flash flood related deaths occur in
automobiles. Two feet of flowing water will cause most cars to
float... smaller cars will float in less water. Flooding hazards are
increased at night when visibility is reduced. The National Weather
Service urges you to respect all barriers that warn of flooded
roads. Turn around ... don't drown.

The National Weather Service issues severe weather watches and
warnings. A watch means that severe weather...
severe thunderstorms... tornadoes or flash flooding is possible. You
should already know what to do if a warning is issued. A warning
means that severe weather is imminent or occurring. When any severe
weather warning... is issued... take immediate action to protect your
life.

Taking steps now to prepare for severe weather will help keep you
and your family safe should flooding threaten your neighborhood.

For more information on severe weather awareness... visit our web
Page. Today concludes severe weather awareness week.

POSSIBLE HURRICANE/TROPICAL STORM/SUB-TROPICAL STORM INTO LATE MAY/EARLY JUNE. The GFS has been showing the development of a tropical system in the Western Caribbean. From it's development, it moves north possible effecting South-eastern Florida, then moving tangent to the east coast, until it retrogrades around Cape Hatteras due to a blocking high to the north, if the blocking high to north moves more east, it will then allow the storm to continue it's move up the east coast, possible effecting the entire east coast. There is still a good chance that this could also blow out to sea, and not effect land at all (except in the Caribbean). If it does effect the east coast, its strength is uncertain; water temperatures off the southeast coast should be around 80 by late May/early June (higher water temps possible with the Gulf Stream); and water temps along the Mid-Atlantic and New England coast should be in the 60's, 50's near Maine. Water temps in the 60's could make this a sub-tropical/extra-tropical event, but still powerful. As the storm retrogrades, it could gain intensity, if it then gains momentum from a strong jet, it could move fast enough where it would not loose much intensity and could effect the Mid-Atlantic and New England as a strong topical storm or hurricane. If that scenario doesn't happen, the storm could move out to sea, or effect us as a sub-tropical storm. Again, this way far out to tell what might happen. We'll have to wait and see. :hmm:

Here's a look at the storm from the GFS 12z model run @ (May 29th, 12z):

0z Euro showed a tropical storm making landfall on NC's coast moving north-northeast into VA, then back out into the Atlantic about 400 miles south-southeast of NYC. This is a week earlier though around May 22nd.
