* at 737 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
heavy showers and thunderstorms moving across portions of northeast
New Jersey and into New York City. These were moving east at around
30 mph and will be moving across western Long Island through 930 PM.
These contain rain rates of up to 1 inch per hour. Excessive runoff
from this storm will cause minor flooding of urban
areas... highways... streets and underpasses as well as other drainage
areas and low lying spots.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Minor flooding means that although streams and creeks may rise out of
their banks... property damage will be minimal. Inconveniences can be
expected but the flooding will not be immediately life threatening.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. Most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Turn around and
find another Route.

Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases... or a
warning is issued.

excess of 60 mph. These storms were located along a line extending
from 10 miles northwest of Mattituck to Wading River... and moving
east at 30 mph.

Valley into the St Lawrence River valley Thursday afternoon into
Friday. Heavy showers and thunderstorms will become increasingly
likely Thursday afternoon into Thursday night as this system
interacts with a moist and unstable airmass over the area. This
activity will continue into Friday.

* This setup is conducive to bands of heavy rain showers and
thunderstorms training over the same area. Localized rainfall
rates could exceed 2 inches in an hour if thunderstorms train
over the same area for an hour... which would cause Urban and
Small Stream flash flooding.

* Overall 1 to 2 inches of rainfall are expected across the area
Thursday into Friday... with higher amounts in the path of
training activity. This will likely cause marked rises on main
Stem rivers... but they are expected to remain within their
banks.

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 94 DEGREES WAS SET AT ISLIP NY
YESTERDAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 93 SET IN 1999.

A RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 74 DEGREES WAS SET AT ISLIP NY
YESTERDAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 73 DEGREES SET IN 1998.

The National Weather Service in New York has issued a heat
advisory... which is in effect from 11 am to 8 PM EDT Thursday.

* Locations... coastal Connecticut and Long Island.

* Hazards... combination of high levels of heat and humidity.

* Heat index values... up to 100.

* Timing... highest heat index values will occur during the
afternoon and early evening hours.

* Impacts... if no protective action is taken... initial impacts
include fatigue. Sunstroke... muscle cramps... and/or heat
exhaustion are also possible.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory is issued if the heat index values reach 100 to
104 degrees. Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned
room... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and
neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency... call 9 1 1.

exhaustion or heat stroke are also possible.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning is issued when the combination of heat
and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 105 degrees
or greater. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time
outside. When possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early
morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat
exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting
clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
