Okay, so climatology has gone out the window. I'll just post here if something of note happened in the region.
Last night, we had a complex of severe thunderstorms and heavy showers move through the region. Estimated arrival time in Grand Forks was approximately 3:20-3:30 AM that morning. Two severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect for our county during the severe episode.
-
Welcome to Grand Forks!
-
A Freeze Watch is in effect for Grand Forks county from 3 AM to 9 AM Wednesday, for low temperatures in the low to mid 30s tonight, and mid to upper 20s on Thursday morning.
A Frost Advisory is in effect for the same time period.
Forecast Low Temperatures
Tonight: 34
Tomorrow Night: 29
Thursday Night: 39
And it's only mid-September. This is gonna be a fun winter. :thrilled:
-
Whoo, lordie! It's 90 degrees outside right now underneath a blazing sun. Granted, our lows are now generally in the 60s instead of around 80 as when I first got here a couple of months ago, but it's still too hot for me. I'd actually prefer your weather than the weather here!
-
Another interesting thing from the local office: radar image caught birds taking off at sunrise. The loops on the west side are the birds being detected by radar. Pretty fascinating image.
-
A High Wind Watch is in effect for many counties just west of us, for forecasts of NW winds of 40 mph sustained. Gusts of 60 mph are possible as well.
Forecast for Tuesday calls for tropical storm force wind gusts in Grand Forks, but this number may be changed.
-
I know it's North Dakota, and you'll have a hard time believing this, but...
Record Report: September 28th, 2011
Today, the Grand Forks International Airport recorded a high temperature of 86 degrees. This breaks the old record of 84 degrees, set in 1995.

That's not surprising at all to me. The northern Plains are known to have wild swings in temperature since there's nothing to block the air masses from either Mexico or Canada.

A whole slew of warnings and interesting weather here in Grand Forks! Stay with me here. :P
A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 AM Thursday to 9 PM Thursday.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for the same time period.
A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for the same time period.
Forecast Wind Speeds for the next 2 days:
Today: SSE at 23-31 mph, gusts to 44.
Tomorrow: S 21-24 mph increasing to 31-34 mph, gusts to 50.
-
A High Wind Warning is in effect for Grand Forks county and surrounding areas, for sustained wind speeds of 40 mph, with gusts to 55.
-
Grand Forks airport is heavily restricting all flights in and out of the area. Unconfirmed reports of a 71 knot wind gust at the airfield.
-
A nice chilly and breezy morning today in Grand Forks! Currently 33 degrees, with a few clouds. The winds currently knock the wind chill factor down to 24 degrees.
Short term: Temperatures won't make it very far today, only climbing to around 49, and to 44 by Wednesday. Lows will hold in the mid to upper 20s the next few nights. The good news is, this trend won't last long, as an isolated 60 or two are possible at the beginning of the next work week.
-
A cool and crisp 23 degrees was the low this morning. If weather conditions remain favorable, we may hit a low in the upper 10s tonight. To my friends down south: enjoy the warmth while it lasts!
-
We hit a pleasant low of 20 in Grand Forks today, and currently we have freezing fog being reported on campus. We should warm up nicely today, though, with an expected high of 53 degrees.
-
Although details are still unclear, the first snowfall in Grand Forks could occur on Tuesday evening, according to models.
-
Light rain in the region.
In other news, a rare fire tornado was reported in Langdon. Picture below. Pretty cool, eh? :P
-
New England had their fun, but models are pointing to another winter storm, this time for the Northern Plains. Still a while out, but if the models continue similar runs, the Dakotas and Minnesota could be getting their first big snowfall of the year. Not as much as New England, I'm guessing, but still a respectable amount.
-
Snow chances gone here in Grand Forks. Regardless, still a couple of advisories active at the moment.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect for possible fire conditions across the region.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for wind gusts up to 45-50 mph in some places.
Current temperature is 40. Wind chills are hovering around the low 30s to the upper 20s.
-
It is currently 19 degrees right now in the Grand Cities, with a wind chill hovering around 9 or 10 degrees. More cold air expected in the short term, with highs possibly not making it to 40.
-
Didn't accumulate, but widespread reports of snow flurries across campus just a few minutes ago.
-
It's amazing how little snow can really reduce visibility when the wind starts throwing it around. About a half inch to an inch of snow on the ground here in Grand Forks, and snowfall should continue in the short term. Winter is finally here. :D
-
One of the coldest nights of November set to hit North Dakota, with the albedo of the snowfall and clearing skies conjuring up a temperature plummet. No official numbers yet, but the GFK Forecast Discussion suggests that lows to the west of the Grand Cities may get below zero. Current low for Grand Forks tonight is 7 degrees.
-
Lows updated. Low tonight is a toasty 4 degrees. *Sarcasm*
-
Some rather significant ridging and warm air has smashed the heat records for today in Grand Forks. The local office recorded a high of 56, breaking the old record of 51. The airport had a high of 58.

Yet another record-breaking day here in Grand Forks, where we broke our record high by 1 degree. Seems like everyone has seen their first 90(s) of the year except down here, not that I'm complaining. I want them to stay away for as long as possible. I'll take these 70s to low 80s we've been having over 90s any day. :cool2:

Severe thunderstorms likely tonight, with the main band hitting Grand Forks around 10-11 PM. An isolated tornado and wind threat is possible, but the main hazard will be very large hail, with some stones up to 3 inches possible tonight. I will try to get some video and photos of the aftermath tonight.

Grand Forks hit 80 degrees today for the first time in three weeks, and it shouldn't get any warmer throughout the next several days.
We currently are sitting in an Omega Block, which is keeping us nice and dry at least through the next 38 hours before it breaks down on Thursday afternoon, bringing in an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms from then on out. SPC is quite confident about a severe weather episode on Sunday - the overall extended outlook is posted below.
-
Might as well point out how drastically things can change here temperature wise. Here is a comparison of the temperatures from Saturday to today.
Saturday's High: 93
Deviation From Normal: +18
Today's High (So Far): 62
Deviation From Normal: -13
Overall Temperature Change: -31
31 degree drop in highs over a 48 hour period. Rather impressive.
This high was hit at 10 AM today. It is now well after midday and our temperature has dropped to 54 with wind gusts to 40 mph.
-
Moderate risk of severe thunderstorms to our south with Grand Forks and its entire FA in a slight risk today. Large hail and damaging winds the main threat...with an elevated chance for tornadoes.
-
While the Northeast faces blistering heat, the Northern Plains will continue to see the mercury settle below average for the next few days. Yesterday's high of 66 was 11 degrees below our normal high of 77.
-
A tornado warning is in effect until 7:30 PM. Sirens aren't going off yet.

A slight risk of severe thunderstorms exists today across Grand Forks, although excess cloudiness in our area should limit the most significant weather to stay to our southwest, where instability and moisture content is better. Regardless, damaging winds, large hail with a few stones greater than 2 inches, and a tornado are possible today.
I will be at the airport the majority of the day today, and from the cafe there visibility is about 10-20 miles on a good day. If they come at the right time I should have some good pictures later tonight.
On a side note, once the cold front blows through, temperatures will be very, very low for early August. The forecast high for tomorrow is a mere 68, 14 degrees below average.

After the impressive winds today, winds will lighten up and skies will clear, which will allow for a perfect setup for a rapid cool down and the formation of frost. A Frost Advisory is in effect until 9 AM Thursday.
Lows the next two nights should also be on the chilly side, with temperatures in the upper 30s. A nice warm up is expected from a thermal ridge through Saturday before a significant trough moves through and brings another shot...and potentially long lasting...of cooler air. Highs should range from the upper 50s to low 60s beyond Saturday.
Looks like fall is here - cold enough to warrant a jacket but not enough to make it snow...yet.
-
Couple reports of frost did come through yesterday and with an even cooler night forecast for tonight, we can expect for frost for almost the entire eastern half of North Dakota. A Frost Advisory is once again in effect - text is posted below.
Low tonight 35.

It is getting close to the time of year when people start talking snow up in North Dakota. Normally, we do not get any real accumulations until late October or early November. However, there is a decent chance at seeing some snowfall accumulations - albeit light - in Grand Forks and areas to our north late this week as a weak low pressure system slides north across Minnesota - following the pattern of a Colorado Low.
NWS Grand Forks does not mention snow in our forecast as surface temperatures will be on the warm side and should melt any snow that does fall. However, there is still quite a bit of uncertainty on the table. HPC does have decent 1 inch snowfall probs for us and areas north, as will as a significant snowfall contour for 4 inches or more for the same area (Almost zero faith in that forecast as it relies on very specific parameters to be met). Maps are attached below.
For the record, if snowfall does fall this week across Grand Forks, it will break the record for earliest recorded snowfall accumulations in the city, according to NWS records dating back to 1981. The earliest day that saw snowfall accumulations of 0.1 inches or greater was October 26th. The earliest 1 inch accumulation was November 9th.

...POTENTIAL EARLY SEASON SNOW EVENT WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY...
THERE IS INCREASING POTENTIAL FOR AN EARLY SEASON WINTER STORM
THAT COULD PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO
THURSDAY MORNING. LOW PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO MOVE ACROSS THE
CENTRAL PLAINS AND INTO MINNESOTA WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY.
RAINFALL WILL ACCOMPANY THE SYSTEM ON WEDNESDAY...HOWEVER THERE IS
INCREASING POTENTIAL FOR RAINFALL CHANGING OVER TO SNOW AFTER
MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY NIGHT. WHILE WARM SURFACE TEMPERATURES WILL
MELT THE SNOW EARLY IN THE EVENT...THE PROLONGED NATURE OF THE
EVENT WILL INCREASE THE CHANCE FOR ACCUMULATING SNOW THURSDAY
MORNING. AT THE CURRENT TIME...WEATHER MODELS ARE TARGETING THE
NORTHERN RED RIVER VALLEY AND PARTS OF NORTHWEST MINNESOTA.
IF SNOW RATES ARE HIGH ENOUGH...THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR RAPIDLY
ACCUMULATING AND BLOWING SNOW. HOWEVER THERE IS STILL A LARGE

EDIT: Facebook reports from their office indicate total accumulation of about 2.5 inches at the NWS office down the road.
A bigger storm could be on the way late next week - probably on Friday/Saturday. Some heavier accumulations could be possible by then, assuming the 540 line stays to our south.
