Dallas-Fort Worth weather

After reaching 100° for the very first time this entire calendar year yesterday, the Dallas-Fort Worth area
will have to endure the brunt of an ongoing brutal heat wave that engulfs the entire southern half of
the country for at least this week. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport recorded that 100° temperature
at 3:00 PM yesterday afternoon to make it the 6th-latest date during a given summer that Dallas didn't reach
triple-digit readings. Keep in mind that the National Weather Service forecast office in Fort Worth does not provide
archived daily weather roundups for Love Field in Dallas.  That explains why The Weather Channel announced
this 100° high temperature for Dallas yesterday by using Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport's data.

FIRST 100-DEGREE DAY OF THE YEAR AT DFW AIRPORT...

Shortly before 3:00 PM Central Daylight Time, the temperature at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport
climbed to 100°. This is the first time this year that Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has reached
the century mark. This is the 6th-latest first 100° day.

There have only been 2 years in the 109-year* history of observations for the official Dallas-Fort Worth site
when we did not hit 100°... 1906 and 1973.

In those years when we had 100°+ temperatures, the first 100° day has occurred as early as March 9,
back in 1911 and as late as August 23rd, back in 1989. The average first day that we reach 100° is June 30th.

We have had 100°+ temperatures every month from March through October with the earliest occurrence
being March 9th and the latest occurrence being October 3rd.

The average number of 100°+ days is 16.  The record number of 100°+ days in 69 which occurred in 1980.

A Heat Advisory is in effect until 6:00 PM Central Daylight Time tomorrow. Also, an ongoing Flood Warning is
still in effect until further notice for the Elm Fork portion of the Trinity River near Carrollton in Dallas County
thanks to the excessive rain that has fallen prior to this dry spell.

Lancaster, Texas did not submit their latest weather observations for this hour, so I'm replacing it with
Duncanville, Texas for this report.

Wow! Its hard to believe that today was the first day this year that temps there hit 100! That's an area of the country that you usually associate with very bad heat.

Well guys, a lot of the reason Dallas hadn't been that hot this summer up until a few days ago was due to
the excessive amount of rain the city has received over the last few months.

Meantime, another hot day for the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area this afternoon as temperatures in
most locations have topped the 100° mark and no relief from this heat wave is expected until
at best Thursday.  Readings will return to more seasonable levels in the 90s for the heart of
the summer season. Thursday is also the next best chance the Metroplex could see any precipitation.

Bedford, Texas is listed in its place. Lancaster, Texas' reporting site is down again,
so Duncanville, Texas is listed instead.

It is a warm and humid overnight period in northern Texas as dew point levels are at uncomfortable levels.
With scattered showers around the region for the last few days, the sticky air comes as no surprise.
There is the chance of more scattered showers later today and even the possibily of thunderstorms may develop
as well. Temperatures will remain at seasonable levels in the upper 80s to low 90s across the Metroplex.

THE WEATHER OBSERVATIONS POSTED BELOW AREN'T CURRENT. THEY ARE FROM EARLIER IN THE DAY.

The northern half of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is seeing areas of heavy rain this morning with
possible flooding in low lying areas of the region. However, a drastic contrast on the south side of the Metroplex
is seeing fair weather right now. However, all locations have a common temperature range of 70° to 75°
at this hour.

More showers and possible thunderstorms are in the forecast this afternoon as temperatures will be well below
the normal high of 90° for this date at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

It is a very unseasonably warm day across much of the eastern two-thirds of Texas this afternoon as temperatures
are well up into the 70s in most locations.  Conditions are slowly beginning to change though as readings are
at least 10° cooler in the northern and western portions of the Metroplex and a shift in wind direction of a more
northerly breeze. Most reporting stations have winds coming from the south at this hour.

Clouds have also been rolling in from the west as skies are mostly cloudy to overcast regionwide.
After near record high temperatures near 80° around Dallas, rain and possible thunderstorms are expected tonight
and early tomorrow that will drop temperatures into the upper 40s to low 50s about 24 hours from now.

After high temperatures of 79° on Saturday and 77° yesterday at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport,
today will be the last day of this unseasonably warm spell across the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area
before a cold front passage early tomorrow. Winds will pick up this afternoon and there is the chance of
scattered showers and thunderstorms ahead of the cold front. Strong southerly winds have boosted temperatures
well into the 70s across the entire Metroplex and any location reaching 80° cannot be ruled out.
It won't set record high readings, but it is definitely way above the normal high of 54° in Dallas.

Temperatures will return to closer to normal by the end of this week with fair skies in the forecast after
early tomorrow where additional chances of showers and thunderstorms are possible.

Meantime, I redid my Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area weather map.  It is zoomed in a little closer and
effectively eliminates Denton, Texas and McKinney, Texas as a part of it.  They're now on the four graphic pages
of other weather observations across the Metroplex.  The placement of the map locations are more balanced now.
Two new locations are on the map. They are Alliance Airport (technically has a Fort Worth postal address)
and Duncanville, Texas.

The morning rush hour in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area usually isn't fun to begin with, but it was tougher
than normal today.  Wintry precipitation is something you don't see that often in northern Texas even during
this time of year.  A mix of rain and sleet made roads difficult to travel on for commuters and temperatures
are just above the freezing mark in nearly all locations across the Metroplex where rain is falling instead.

Most of the precipitation is on the south and east side of the Metroplex with temperatures mainly in the 30s,
well below the normal high of 55° for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on this date.  There is the chance of
more rain for the rest of today and highs are expected to top out in the low 40s.  Conditions will improve by
tomorrow with readings jumping back up into the 60s under fair skies.

On a side note, after I had recently revamped my Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area weather map,
I have added a brand new northern Texas regional map.  It also includes locations outside the Lone Star State,
including an important one with Oklahoma City. Unfortunately, I couldn't include San Angelo, Texas on it.
From time to time, you will see Shreveport, Louisiana though. For any of my weather maps, those locations that
don't have heat indices or wind chill readings aren't posted, but the place names remain.  Also, it was put off for
quite some time, but I finally added the element that was missing for the black bar information I provide.
It is the monthly precipitation total.  However, it is a little different in my presentation than the actual IntelliSTAR,
that being one of the very few elements I have that is not emulated.  I decided to put above the place name
the "January precipitation" label instead of "currently" as the IntelliSTAR uses so I can have more room to keep
the place names as they are without shortening them any further. I just didn't like writing "JAN PRECIP" and then
"0.26 IN" on the same line as it would be for what you'd see on TV.

And lastly, note the repeated forecast for this afternoon across the Metroplex.
Hard to believe that six reporting sites all expect rain with a high temperature of 40°.
The National Weather Service had that exact forecast for each of them despite three in Tarrant County,
two in Dallas County and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport located in both counties.

What I found interesting is the wide range in contrasting weather forecasted between northwestern Texas and
the northeast side. I'm talking about the temperature difference and the amount of sunshine or inclement weather.

After the unseasonably chilly temperatures that was experienced back on Friday, a brief warmup back the
other direction will come to an end this afternoon.  A potent cold front is sweeping through Texas as part of
a low pressure system that is moving through the Great Plains region.  Notice the drastic contrast in temperatures
between the western side of Texas and up in Oklahoma as opposed to what it is in Dallas and points east.

High temperatures this morning are unseasonably mild being well into the 60s to near 70°, but will steadily drop as
the day progresses. It has been a very windy day already with wind gusts as high as near 60 MPH in a few spots.
Completely unlike Friday, it is quite dry across the region with Love Field in Dallas reporting a humidity level of
just 19%. Because of the high winds and dry conditions, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the entire
Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area until at least 6:00 PM Central Standard Time this evening.

Strong west and northwest winds and very low humidities will continue through the afternoon across all of
North Texas. Sustained wind speeds of 30 to 40 MPH with gusts in excess of 50 MPH and relative humidities
ranging from 10 to 15% will lead to extreme fire weather conditions through early evening.
The winds are expected to diminish this evening.

Return southerly flow and low humidity will lead to very high fire danger conditions across all of North Texas
Wednesday afternoon. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for all of North Texas on Wednesday afternoon.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.
A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry vegetation will create explosive fire growth potential.
Avoid all outside burning and welding today. Do not toss lit cigarette Butts outside.
Report wild fires to the nearest Fire Department or law enforcement office.

Just as it was earlier this month, we see another unseasonably warm day in northern Texas as temperatures
in many locations are into the 80s this afternoon, including Dallas and Fort Worth.  Depending on where you are,
there are variable sky conditions to be found around the Metroplex.  On the south side such as in Duncanville
and Burleson, skies are completely sunny. But elsewhere, it is either mostly cloudy to overcast.

Because of very low humidity presently in the region and the winds expected to pick up this evening,
the National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory and Red Flag Warning for all of northern Texas tonight.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, Texas
on February 25, 2008

A RED FLAG WARNING remains in effect until 9:00 PM Central Standard Time this evening.



Conditions are favorable for explosive fire growth across North Texas through this evening, especially west of
Interstate 35 where winds will gust between 35 and 45 MPH with humidity values below 25 percent.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.
A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry vegetation will create explosive fire growth potential.
Avoid all outside burning and welding today. Do not toss lit cigarette Butts outside.
Report wild fires to the nearest Fire Department or law enforcement office.

A WIND ADVISORY is effect until 6:00 AM Central Standard Time on Tuesday morning.



Windy conditions will continue through daybreak Tuesday across all of North Texas.
Expect south winds gradually shifting to the northwest as a surface front moves through the region.
Sustained speeds will range from 20 to 30 MPH with gusts up to 40 MPH.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Boaters should use extra caution when venturing onto area lakes, especially open waters that will likely
become very choppy and rough. Residents may wish to take action to secure trash cans, lawn furniture and
other lightweight outdoor objects that may be blown around in the strong winds.

The warm temperatures will come to an end tonight as a strong cold front will move through the region and
readings will gradually drop into the upper 30s to low 40s overnight.  Then it will be the opposite of today
where it will be a bit below the normal high of 63° as it is expected to be in the upper 50s tomorrow.

It is a tale of two seasons from the western side of Texas to the eastern side during this overnight period.
With the strong cold front accompanying a strong storm system moving through the southern half of the country,
the clash of strong southerly winds bringing moisture air from the Gulf of Mexico with strong northerly winds on
the back side of the storm has created strong thunderstorms. They are now moving into the west side of the
Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area at this hour.

Temperatures are dropping from daytime highs in the 70s yesterday (Sunday) into the 40s and 50s later today.
There is the chance of believe it or not some possible mixture of rain and snow in the coldest areas of the region
by evening.

By looking closely at the weather observations for each reporting site, you can tell which locations have had
the cold front pass through and those that haven't. This is by seeing the temperature difference and
wind direction. Very good timing on my part that I posted this report to show this variety of weather conditions.
One interesting weather observation is the wind speed and gusts for Carrollton, Texas.
That location has sustained winds of 15 MPH, but wind gusts of 52 MPH!

A Tornado Watch that was in effect for parts of northern Texas that also included Dallas and Fort Worth

Strong southerly winds of 25 to 35 MPH with gusts to 45 MPH will continue ahead of a cold front through
late tonight. Winds will shift to the northwest behind the cold front to 30 to 40 MPH with higher gusts.
Gusty winds will persist through the day Monday.

As it has been discussed on The Weather Channel, it is once again an unseasonably warm mid-March afternoon
in North Texas. Temperatures are 10° to 15° above normal for this time of year and most locations are at or above
the 80° mark. However, go farther south into the central and southern portions of the Lone Star State,
it is even warmer. Cities such as San Antonio, it is above 90°.  It isn't completely out of character for Texas
to receive this warmth before winter is officially over, but even this is well above normal for them.



A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of Texas, but it only includes the western side of the Metroplex.
Dallas isn't included in this warning, but Fort Worth is due to the warm and dry conditions. It is also windy to the
west of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area as West Texas locations have to deal with wind and blowing dust.

Temperatures will cool off to slightly above normal readings over the weekend, but the threat of thunderstorms
will increase as we head into early next week.
