Rain...is a good thing!   Although the Texas deluge did cause some flooding, the rain is extremely beneficial.  Here is some data from the past couple of days, as well as data showing where the Metroplex stands in its rainfall amounts, as of January 26, 2012.

A RECORD RAINFALL OF 3.54 INCHES WAS SET AT DALLAS FORT WORTH
YESTERDAY JANUARY 25TH.  THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 1.28 INCHES
SET IN 1973.

3.54 INCHES OF RAIN IS ALSO THE MOST RAIN THAT HAS EVER FALLEN
WITHIN A CALENDAR DAY DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY. THE OLD RECORD
WAS 3.15 INCHES SET ON JANUARY 4TH 1998.

Rainfall and Cooler Temperatures Wednesday Night and Thursday:
When the forecast on Wednesday called for an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms to begin in the afternoon and continue through the overnight hours and into Thursday, some may have been a little skeptical, looking up at a mostly sunny sky in the early afternoon.  But around 4 PM local time on Wednesday, thunderstorms rolled through the area, bringing heavy rain at times and non-stop thunder and lightning through the overnight hours.  Thursday saw cloudy skies and unseasonable April-like temperatures.  I've provided a rainfall report and today's almanac to show you what the Metroplex got from these storms and resulting cold front.

Before it moved east, the high pressure "dome" brought five straight days of hundred-degree temperatures to the Metroplex.  Not to mention the warm morning lows, as well...

THE LOW TEMPERATURE AT DALLAS FORT WORTH AIRPORT YESTERDAY...JUNE
27TH...WAS 83 DEGREES. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD WARMEST LOW FOR
JUNE 27TH OF 80 DEGREES SET IN 1994 AND 1999.

In light of all the talk about the heatwave in the East, even the Metroplex managed to get another 100+ degree day to go in the "weather data books" for 2012.



I am only posting this because, though triple-digits are certainly not a rarity in Dallas and in July for that matter, we too had our little version of a heatwave.  And because, so far, this summer is no where near as brutal as last, so triple-digit days are not an everyday occurence and can actually count as news.  This time last year, we were at 14 out of 71 triple-digit days for the year.

Talk about unseasonably warm!  These have been the high temperatures for the past five days, recorded at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.  Two records have even been noted.

A MASSIVE cold front brought a line of severe thunderstorms through the Metroplex last night, December 19, 2012.  But the story everyone is talking about are the winds!  Strong sustained wind speeds and wind gusts plagued the area from late evening Wednesday, overnight, and into mid-day Thursday.  Widespread damage was reported, especially in Downtown Dallas and in East Dallas.

December 19, 2012
Highest Wind Direction/Speed: W at 41 mph
Highest Gust Direction/Speed: W at 52 mph

December 20, 2012
Highest Wind Direction/Speed: W at 39 mph
Highest Gust Direction/Speed: NW at 51 mph


Additionally, a map has been provided by The National Weather Service office in Fort Worth, TX depicting the highest wind gusts from Wednesday.  Notice the highest gust was in downtown Dallas at 66 mph!

COLD SPELL: 13 days of below-average temperatures
From Christmas Eve to five days into the New Year, temperatures across the Metroplex were surprisingly cool and, at times, much below the average high of 56°.  The day after Christmas was the coldest, as the high did not surpass the freezing mark!  Here is a graph showing the temperature trend over the past 13 days.  Today, the spell ended when the high temperature reached 57°, one degree above the average high.

After 24+ hours of a steady rainfall, the Metroplex picked up anywhere between 1 and 6 inches of rain over the past couple of days.  Additionally, two new records have been set for the wettest January 8 and 9 on record.  I have also posted the NWS's preliminary rainfall totals for the area...I apologize, but it is a pretty long list.
