Dallas-Fort Worth weather

After almost THREE weeks of 100-plus degree temperatures for the DFW metro area, this streak of consecutive 100-plus degree days was broken yesterday thanks to cloud cover and some rain. The heat advisory, which had been in effect for about two and a half weeks, was cancelled Tuesday evening and was not in effect yesterday. Unfortunately, a new heat advisory signaling the return of hot weather and high humidity has returned today and is in effect until 8 PM CDT Friday.

Below are a couple of graphics I created showing exactly how hot it was for the past several days and what the current triple-digit heat "status" is for the metroplex as of August 18, 2010. Data and some graphics courtesy of The National Weather Service and The Weather Channel.

BIG COLD FRONT

It's been a crazy week temperature-wise for the DFW metroplex. From record temperatures on Monday to below average (yes, below average) temperatures yesterday and some RAIN, it was clear that a cold front moved through the area. Good news: the triple-digit heat is done for the metroplex this year! Bad news: Temperatures will still climb into the mid-90s for the weekend and into next week.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine (now TD Hermine) are going to bring a lot of rain here to the DFW Metroplex tonight and tomorrow. Here are some forecast graphics for the Metroplex. I put these together pretty quickly, so if there are any mistakes, I apologize. Enjoy!

***MAJOR FLOOD THREAT FOR DALLAS/FORT WORTH***

Tropical Depression Hermine was not too friendly when she passed through the metroplex today. From a constant rain overnight to periods of very heavy rain and strong winds throughout the day, Hermine was definetely not playing around.

The rain stopped at about 1 PM this afternoon, and the sun is trying to peak through the big clouds, but this is probably not going to be the end of it. Forecasts are showing more rain for tonight and possibly tomorrow morning (graphics below).

The DFW Metroplex welcomes fall!

After weeks of what seemed like endless summer weather, the season of fall has finally arrived in Dallas, and it looks like it's here to stay! A cold front blew through this weekend, bringing rain on Saturday and the cooler temperatures Sunday afternoon. For the past couple of days, temperatures have been BELOW NORMAL, with lows in the low- to mid- 50s. First Wintry Precipitation for 2011 Yesterday

A winter storm moved through north Texas on Sunday, January 9, 2011 leaving the region with its first snowfall of the year. Snowfall totals were VERY sporadic. Despite the two hours of constant snowfall, totals only reached .2 inches at DFW Airport. However, totals neared 3 inches in the far northern towns in the Metroplex.

This system was more of a rain-maker than anything. A record-setting amount of rain fell yesterday morning before it turned to snow in the afternoon:

ARCTIC BLAST OF 2011

Only in Texas can you have temperatures in the 70s for the weekend and then have them drastically turn to the bitter 20s for the early part of the week. As TWC is calling it, this "COLOSSAL" winter storm is going to have its effects on regions as far south as the Metroplex. Most effects will be felt tomorrow morning. So don't worry...this will all be out by the time SuperBowl Sunday rolls around.

FINALLY...Texas is a big state (as we all probably know ). So with a big state means a big range in temperatures:

FACT:
Amarillo's highest temperature on Tuesday was 10°F.
Brownsville's highest temperature on Tuesday was 72°F.
That's a 62° difference in high temperatures for the state!!!
