It is even hotter in Washington, DC than it is in locations farther north such as Philadelphia. There is the protential of some locations reaching the century mark for tomorrow. Some locations tonight may not even make it any lower than the 80's for the overnight low. Glad I'm not down there right now.

Across much of the Interstate 95 corridor from Richmond, Virginia through Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia
and New York City, temperatures this afternoon are unseasonably warm for mid-April. Peak readings are expected
to reach the low to mid 80s in our nation's capital and around 80° in both Philadelphia and New York City.
It is also very dry right now across much of northern Virginia and southern Maryland under this strong dome of
high pressure sitting off the coast. While there are no watches or warnings issued by the National Weather Service
at this time, humidity levels in many locations are below 20%, almost desert-like conditions.

Plenty of sunshine this afternoon and clear skies tonight paves the way toward a nice Saturday as
high temperatures are expected to reach 80° again, but will cool off by Sunday with showers in the forecast
through Monday night and temperatures to top out in the low 60s.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,

A strong coastal low pressure storm system that originated as widespread areas of severe weather across
the nation's heartland over the past 72 hours has brought heavy rain to the mid-Atlantic coastal region
of the United States over the past 18 to 24 hours. The nation's capital is bearing the brunt of this
heavy precipitation that is gradually moving north and east during the overnight hours. Rainfall totals could
reach 5 to 6 inches in the most saturated areas in northern Virginia, the city of Washington itself as well as
eastern Maryland (including Baltimore) from this storm before all is said and done. The National Weather Service
has issued two flood warnings for many locations along the Potomac River during this overnight period.

This same area of moderate to heavy rain is forecast to move toward Philadelphia and into primarily
the southern portions of the New York City metropolitan area later today.

Weather conditions aren't expected to improve for another 12 to 18 hours and in the meantime,
it is expected to be a raw Monday with temperatures not getting out of the 50s.
By Tuesday, sunny skies and temperatures rebounding to around 70°.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia on May 12, 2008

A FLOOD WARNING is in effect until 5:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time.

The National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia has issued a Flood Warning for the following locations:

District of Columbia
Arlington County in northern Virginia
City of Alexandria, Virginia
City of Fairfax, Virginia
City of Falls Church, Virginia
Fairfax County in northern Virginia

At 11:31 PM EDT, radar indicated an area of very heavy rain over the Washington metropolitan area.
Over 3 inches have fallen across the area and another 2 to 3 inches will be possible through 5:30 AM EDT.

Some locations that will continue to be affected by the heavy rain include Alexandria, Annandale, Arlington,
Bailey's Crossroads, Ballston, Burke, Centreville, Chantilly, Fort Belvoir, Franconia, Great Falls, Herndon,
Hybla Valley, Lake Barcroft, Lincolnia, Lorton, McLean, Merrifield, Newington, Oakton, Reagan National Airport,
Reston, Rosslyn, Springfield, the I-395 and I-495 interchange, the I-66 and I-495 interchange, Tysons Corner,
Vienna, Wolf Trap, the American Legion Bridge, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Adams Morgan, Anacostia,
American University, Georgetown, Kenilworth, the city of Washington and the U.S. Capitol.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However, all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to higher ground to escape flood waters.
Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins rising.

A COASTAL FLOOD WARNING is in effect until 6:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time.

The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington has issued a Coastal Flood Warning which is in effect
until 6:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time.

This mornings high tide cycle will run 2½ to 3 feet above normal. This will put the tidal Potomac north of
Aquia creek in Stafford County in flood. This includes the city of Alexandria, the city of Washington
including East Potomac Park and the easternmost parking areas of Reagan National Airport.

Here are the times of the next high tides along the Potomac River...

Aquia Creek, Virginia... 12:49 AM
Indian Head, Maryland... 2:21 AM
Washington (Maine Avenue wharf)... 2:35 AM
Alexandria, Virginia... 2:53 AM
Washington (Key Bridge)... 3:00 AM

A Coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area
should be alert for rising water and take appropriate action to protect life and property.

I will post the graphics pages as soon as I can.

The first true heat wave of this calendar year is now underway in the nation's capital. Yes, I know.
It shouldn't be called a heat wave just yet, but it is expected to reach 90° until Wednesday at the earliest.

This afternoon is a possible taste of what is yet to come this summer as we are still in late spring here.
Temperatures are a good 15° to 20° above normal for this time of year. Heat index values are already at
dangerous levels as you add the humidity to make it feel above 100° in many locations across
eastern Maryland (except the shore areas) and much of Virginia.

A Heat Advisory is right now in effect for Washington until 8:00 PM tonight.
See the National Weather Service statement for more details.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia on June 7, 2008

A HEAT ADVISORY is in effect until 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon.

A Bermuda high over the western Atlantic through Monday will bring hot and humid conditions to the region
on west to southwest winds. High temperatures across most of northern and central Virginia as well as
the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas will reach the mid and upper 90s each day.
A few locations may reach 100°.

The hot temperatures combined with high humidity will cause heat indices to approach 105° this afternoon.
Heat indices may approach 110° Sunday and Monday.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses
are possible. Since this is the first period of hot and humid weather this season, most area residents
have not yet acclimated to these conditions. That makes heat related injuries more likely.

Here is a refresher on some heat safety tips. Weak loose fitting, light weight and light colored clothing.
Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids. Water is your best choice. Stay out of the sun and spend at least some time
in an air-conditioned room. Never leave children or pets in a locked car even with the windows cracked.

Also remember to check up on relatives and neighbors, especially those who may not have air conditioning
or whose power is still out from the recent severe storms.

Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for the later updates on this situation.

Graphics pages will be posted as soon as possible.

Now fully entrenched in a heat wave that stretches from the southern Great Plains all the way up into the northeastern region of the United States, high temperatures will once again push close to the century mark this afternoon. The heat and humidity could set off a few showers and thunderstorms in and around Washington later today and into tonight before another scorcher tomorrow with more of the same weather (except the threat of storms).

A Heat Advisory is in effect until late tomorrow night for the entire region.
See the National Weather Service statement for more details.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia on June 8, 2008
A HEAT ADVISORY is in effect until 11:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time on Monday night.

Strong high pressure across the western Atlantic will remain in place through early next week, providing hot and humid conditions across the mid Atlantic states. High temperatures both today and Monday are expected to be in the mid to upper 90s. This combined with a humid air mass will allow heat index values to reach up to 105° each afternoon. Temperatures tonight will only drop into the 70s.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Since this is the first period of hot and humid weather this season, most area residents have not yet acclimated to these conditions. That makes heat related injuries more likely.

High temperatures will once again push close to the century mark this afternoon in our nation's capital
after a peak reading of 96° at Ronald Reagan National Airport yesterday, just 2° shy of the 1999 record
for the date. While no storms are in the forecast today, the heat and humidity could set off a few showers
and thunderstorms in and around Washington tomorrow.

A Heat Advisory is in effect until 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time tomorrow night for the entire region.
See the National Weather Service statement for more details.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia on June 9, 2008
A HEAT ADVISORY is in effect until 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday night.

Strong high pressure across the western Atlantic will remain in place through Tuesday, providing hot
and humid conditions across the mid Atlantic states. High temperatures both Monday and Tuesday
are expected to be between 95° to 100°. This combined with a humid air mass will allow heat index values
to reach up to 105°.

A cold front is forecast to move through the area on Tuesday night, allowing for a drop in temperatures
and lower humidity on Wednesday.

Here is a refresher on some heat safety tips. Wear loose fitting, light weight and light colored clothing.
Drink plenty of non alcoholic fluids. Water is your best choice. Stay out of the sun and spend at least
some time in an air-conditioned room. Never leave children or pets in a locked car, even with the windows cracked.

Also remember to check up on relatives and neighbors, especially those who may not have air conditioning.

Graphics pages will be posted as soon as possible.

In what hopefully will be the final hours of this very late spring heat wave across the entire eastern third
of the country, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to move through the Washington and
Baltimore areas late this afternoon or tonight. Temperatures are well up into the 90s across the entire region
and heat indices are at dangerous levels in most areas, including our nation's capital. There are a handful
of heat index levels that are above 110°.

A Heat Advisory is in effect until 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time tonight.
See the National Weather Service statement for more details.
