Gemini huh? My niece is a Gemini. If her personality is any indication, Gemini will be a very fun, interesting, and wild winter storm to follow. :P

Also Quintus is about as close as I'll get to having my name as a storm, it's very similar to my middle name. (if you add in an a,v, and o after the "t" it actually is my middle name.)

Ha ha ha ha ha ha

That was my least favorite class, too.  I even liked math better than that!

At this rate, we're going to run out of names before winter even begins...

I was hoping TWC would not name winter storms again, but I guess not.  Obviously it's a big publicity stunt.

Meh, I don't think it's really a publicity stunt anymore. They're obviously very serious about this whole naming scheme thing.

A year later, I'm still not for it, but so far it's been harmless. It's just a cutesy way of communicating storms to people to keep track of.

As much as i want to call it a publicity stunt they must know alot more than the average viewer who complains about it to do the names for a 2nd year in a row. i say give it time and it will become a staple like the current Hurricane names we are used to every year.

It might become a permanent staple for TWC, but I doubt it'll ever go beyond them into adaptation.

The difference is that the government has a mandate to issue names for tropical cyclones, and, as such, they're recognized the world over, just as names issued by other governments in their own areas are also recognized.  These winter storm names are coming from a private business, essentially, and are mandated by no one; in fact, they're actively rejected by the U.S. government.  However, the press is increasing its use of them - not only NBC, for obvious reasons, but also various newspapers and other media.  That alone may turn the tide into widespread acceptance of these names, even if they remain "unofficial."

Please watch what thread you're posting in.  This post really has nothing to do with winter storms.  Thanks.

Sorry for posting this in the wrong thread.. during the last 30 minutes of Morning Rush and into Wake Up With Al it kept going black and then just disappearing. Then on the Hurricane Hunters at 2:30 they had a big one and a small one on at the same time at one point. They finally got it worked out..lol

One of the names is the name of our 18th U.S. president.

Two of the names make me think of Star Fox (rival storms if you will), while another makes me think of Star Trek.  Of course, this is the group that brought us "Q" as a name last year.  B)

Whenever you get a broad upper level trough, you can expect little impulses or shortwave troughs to ride along the periphery of the main upper level trough.  Those disturbances end up as your Alberta clippers, and they happen all the time.

Is it unusual to see a parade of clippers swing through the US this early in the season though? I thought they usually don't dive in until November and later.

It's a little unusual for October, but it has happened before in the past.  This trough is quite significant and will bring sub-freezing temperatures throughout my area this weekend, and Bluefield, WV just reported the first snowflakes of the season.

It sounds like I've got it coming.  Windchills have already been hitting the single digits, and I have a Winter Weather Advisory.  There's a chance of anything from no precipitation to freezing rain to heavy snow.  Some local forecasts claim that up to a foot or so of the white stuff may be in the works, but nobody believes it.

If you don't mind me asking, what part of Texas do you live in?

There's an saying about how if Dallas sees snow or ice, Atlanta will see it too. The only model (since this morning when I checked) that gives us a chance at seeing any wintry precipitation is the Canadian, it gives us ice. I don't have to explain my extreme doubts about that. The GFS did for a few runs show a freezing rain to rain scenario though.

I'm in the panhandle.  It's like a different state when it comes to cold, but it still gets the Texas heat in the summer.

Oh ok, that's makes sense then. Yeah it's literally night and day in the TX panhandle compared to the rest of the state. The only time we really see temperature extremes like that in GA is when there's a CAD (Cold Air Damming) event setting up.

I guess I had better say, "Atlanta, get ready," because Dallas may see snow or ice by Monday.  Dallas now has a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 12 pm on Monday.

This is what I'm thinking will happen here in Atlanta based on what the computer models have been saying.
Mon Night: Freezing Rain (maybe some brief snow/sleet pellets)
Tuesday: Cold Rain
Tuesday Night: Rain changing to some light snow (wraparound snow basically if we're lucky)

Anyone have a link to storm reports (regarding this winter storm) like the one TWC uses on air?
